Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes killed nearly 3,000, updated official figures showed on Saturday, as international rescue teams began winding down search operations for survivors in the rubble of the disaster. Fatalities jumped by more than 300 from Friday to 2,954, following the June 24 disaster that has left thousands homeless in the streets and sheltering in camps. Tens of thousands more are still reported missing. The government has not given any estimates, but the United Nations has estimated as many as 50,000 are unaccounted for following the 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude shocks. One of Latin America’s worst earthquake disasters hit hardest in the coastal La Guaira area north of the capital, Caracas, where scores of residential complexes were flattened. Ten days after the double shocks, which came just 38 seconds apart, rescue teams are starting to wrap up searches for survivors while families still try to recover bodies of loved ones from the wreckage. The critical window for rescues in disasters like earthquakes usually ends after 72 hours, though a few people have been found alive this week. In an apparent sign that rescue missions were closing up, interim President Delcy Rodriquez held a ceremony to hand out medals to international teams, including their rescue dogs. Venezuela is experiencing “a profound grief gripping our people, where families still hold out hope of finding loved ones alive, people who have lost everything”, Rodriquez said. International disaster teams, including some US squads and some South American teams, were starting to finish up rescue operations, their members said on Saturday. The Los Angeles County fire department rescue team is ending operations after its latest searches showed no signs of life, and teams from Florida and Virginia were packing up to leave this weekend, they said. Many Venezuelans have expressed anger at what they see as their government’s slow response to the disaster, saying families spent the initial hours digging out loved ones themselves before international teams arrived. Rodriguez has defended her government’s response, saying thousands of troops and officials had been dispatched. In La Guaira, workers with heavy machinery on Saturday were starting to knock down collapsed structures, while in others, families were still trying to remove bodies of loved ones for funerals. “We’re still working, still searching for bodies. We’re still going. It hasn’t been easy,” said Venezuelan volunteer Francisco Sasquia, helping dig out a collapsed residence. “We found two bodies that have already been released to their families.” Economic fallout The UN has estimated that the twin earthquakes caused $6.7 billion in physical damage, equivalent to six per cent of GDP for Venezuela, an oil-exporting country. Even before last week’s disaster struck, Venezuela had struggled with decades of economic crisis and political upheaval that undermined its infrastructure and health services. Maiquetia International Airport in La Guaira, which serves Caracas, was also damaged in the quakes. It has reopened partially to allow humanitarian flights to land, but commercial flights are still suspended. “We are in touch with some international partners, countries that will help in restoring the Maiquetia International Airport,” Rodriguez said at another event. “A plan will be ready next week.” For Victor Colivert, the most important thing now was staying by the side of his nephew’s body, recovered from a building’s wreckage and now in a black body bag. He fears losing it in the chaos. His family prevented forensic workers from taking the body away. “If I have to go to China, to wherever, but I’m not leaving him alone,” he said. “I’m going with him.”

DHAKA: Floods and landslides triggered by days of torrential monsoon rain have killed at least 44 people in southeastern Bangladesh and left over a million stranded as authorities raced on Saturday to deliver aid to devastated communities. The disaster management ministry said on Saturday that flooding across seven districts Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj has disrupted daily life, isolated thousands of families, and stranded 267,918 households. Power outages, damaged roads and broken communication links have slowed rescue and relief efforts. Many residents have been unable to cook for days as flood waters submerged their homes, while others are struggling after thick layers of mud covered kitchens and living spaces. There is still water inside our home and we have no way to cook. The dry food we had has run out, and we spend the nights in the dark with our children because there is no electricity, said Nurul Islam, a resident of a flood-hit area in Chattogram. Thousands of families are relying on dry food flattened rice, puffed rice or biscuits that do not require cooking and emergency relief. Washed-out roads and damaged bridges, however, have made it difficult for aid workers to reach some of the hardest-hit communities. Army and navy personnel are ferrying food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies by boat to isolated communities, as authorities step up relief efforts. “The government is doing everything possible to support flood victims. Relief, safe drinking water and medical supplies are being distributed, and we urge people whose homes have been inundated to move to the nearest shelter,” Disaster Management and Relief Minister Iqbal Hossain said during a visit to affected areas in Chattogram. The heavy rain also triggered landslides in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar earlier this week, killing 16 refugees, including women and children. More than one million Rohingya refugees live in the camps, where makeshift shelters on steep, deforested hillsides are especially vulnerable during the monsoon season. Flash floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains have killed at least 50 people in Bangladesh in the past week, officials said on Sunday, with tens of thousands displaced from their homes. Bangladesh, a low-lying delta nation criss-crossed by rivers, is highly vulnerable to floods and landslides during the monsoon season, but scientists say climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. For the last few days, army and border guard personnel have been ferrying food, drinking water and other essential supplies by boat to communities cut off because of heavy flooding in the country’s southeastern districts. As many as 50 people have died in the worst-affected Chattogram district in the past week, including 29 who were buried by landslides, divisional commissioner Mohammed Ziauddin told AFP by phone. “Two individuals are still missing,” he said. Some 35,000 people have been forced to seek shelter in government-run centres, he added. Among those caught up in the disaster in Chattogram was Mohammed Forkan, whose family could not fulfil his wish to be buried beside his parents because the local cemetery was submerged under chest-deep water. “We placed my uncle’s body on a bamboo raft and swam alongside it in search of a piece of land that was not underwater,” his nephew Nizamuddin told AFP. “Finally, we managed to bury him on government land and held a small funeral prayer.” Authorities have opened some 4,000 shelters for displaced residents as shortages of food and safe drinking water deepened the crisis. Many people remain in desperate conditions, with their homes and kitchens submerged by floodwaters, residents said. Last week, heavy rains triggered landslides in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, killing 15 people. More than 1.2 million refugees live in congested shelters on hillsides cleared of trees — making the land unstable during monsoon rains. Cleric killed, 2 injured in quadcopter strike in South Waziristan

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: A local cleric was killed and two other persons were injured in a suspected quadcopter attack near a mosque in Landi Doag area of Birmal tehsil in Lower South Waziristan on Monday evening, police and local sources said. They said three people sustained injuries in the attack and were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana, where one of the injured identified as Maulana Amanullah succumbed to his wounds. The other two injured, who were said to be brothers and identified as Mohammad Zubair and Jahanzeb, were under treatment at the hospital. The slain Maulana Amanullah, 34, son of Hayat, was a resident of Landi Doag belonging to Karamzkhel tribe. Several suspected quadcopter strikes have been reported in South Waziristan over the past year. Residents said such incidents created fear and uncertainty among the civilian population and disrupted daily life. Meanwhile, the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, Lower South Waziristan chapter, condemned the incident, expressing grief over the death of Maulana Amanullah. In a statement, the party called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the suspected attack, urging the authorities to identify those responsible and make the findings public. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf MNA Zubair Wazir in a social media post also condemned the attack, expressing grief over the killing of the cleric and prayed for the recovery of the injured. But progress has stalled in previous months. On Thursday, a Hamas official said the group was coming with a “positive and good” response, but he did not say whether the group had agreed to fully disarm a key sticking point in the talks over the past four months. Hamas wants Israel to commit to ending attacks on Gaza and withdrawing its forces. Sources close to Hamas said the group was willing to “confine and store” heavy weapons under a Palestinian body, not hand it over to Israel. Hamas did not comment on that. It is also not yet clear what would be the fate of light or personal weapons or whether the new Hamas stance would be accepted by Israel and the Board of Peace. The Board of Peace declined immediate comment on the Cairo talks. Israel wants Hamas to cede power completely in Gaza and to fully disarm. Hamas dissolved a de facto Gaza government last month but maintained a caretaker body to provide vital services to residents. Israel effectively controls an estimated 64pc of the tiny coastal Gaza Strip, bombed to ruins by Israel’s two-year military assault that followed a 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel. In a statement, police said weapons used for aerial firing were also recovered from the arrested suspects. The arrests were made within the jurisdictions of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Sachal, Gulistan-i-Johar and Site Super Highway police stations, police said. According to police in Karachi’s West district, three suspects had been arrested for aerial firing on Independence Day. Incidents of aerial firing are a routine occurrence on occasions such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve despite bans imposed in the past, often leaving dozens injured. Last year, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and over 100 others wounded in celebratory gunfire across the metropolis at midnight on Independence Day.

QUETTA: At least four labourers were killed and three others injured in a blast in Balochistan’s Mastung district, while two other people were shot dead, the police said on Friday. The incident occurred in the Garo area of the Khud Kocha sub-tehsil late on Thursday night — the same area where the provincial home minister Zia Ullah Langove survived an armed attack last week, in which nine people, including six security guards were injured. According to sources, a blast took place late on Thursday night, killing four people and injuring three others. A senior police officer of the area’s police station confirmed the blast and casualties. “Four labourers lost their lives and three other people received injuries in the blast which took place last night,” he said. However, he noted that the nature of the blast was unknown. Another senior official claimed that the incident had been a drone attack, adding that the bodies of four labourers were found in the area, alongside two other bodies who had been shot dead. Police transported all six bodies to Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Memorial Hospital in Mastung. One person who had received serious injuries was taken to Civil Hospital Quetta. “We have received six bodies and three injured in the hospital this morning,” an official of the hospital said, adding that bullet wounds were found in two bodies, while the other four had received multiple injuries. Four of the deceased were identified as residents of the Bhag area of Kachhi district. The other two bodies have not yet been identified. Meanwhile, a senior police officer also confirmed the killing of two alleged terrorists in the area, adding that security forces and police were investigating the incident. A monthly security assessment released in early June by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) said that after two consecutive months of improvement, Pakistan’s security situation deteriorated sharply in May, driven primarily by escalating terrorist violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Rescue teams rushed on Thursday to find more than 1,000 people missing on the Nepal-Tibet border in flash floods and landslides that killed at least 165 and swept away entire villages. A terrifying clip of surveillance video from the Chinese side of the frontier shows a massive wall of mud and debris crashing over a building several stories high on Wednesday morning, engulfing it as dozens of people ran for their lives below. The surge swept away buses and cars like they were toys. Many of the missing are foreign tourists, officials said of the disaster, which the US Geological Survey believes was caused by a glacial collapse that sent a flow of debris engulfing areas along the way. The tsunami-like rumble of water and mud struck villages and towns on the path of two rivers — Bhote Koshi and Trishuli, with Nepali police saying they had recovered 162 bodies. Another 823 people, including 579 Nepali and foreign tourists, remained out of contact in Nepal, according to the country’s disaster agency. Later, about 100 missing Indian visitors and 25 Chinese workers were located by rescuers in Nepal, authorities said. Beijing’s foreign ministry said that nearly 100 Chinese nationals were missing in Nepal. “In the disaster-stricken area on the Nepalese side, the number of Chinese citizens missing is nearly 100,” ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters. The Chinese embassy was “seeking further verification” from Nepali authorities, he added. Across the border, Chinese state media said the “mudslide disaster” at the Gyirong Port in Tibet claimed three lives while 558 people, including 260 foreigners, were still missing. Nepal police said they expected the death toll to rise beyond 165. “This will go up, as we have resumed the search and more bodies are expected to be recovered,” police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle told Reuters. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah left by road for Bidur in one of the worst-affected districts of Nuwakot to assess the flood situation, his office said on social media. Raju Bhadel, 56, a businessman in Nuwakot, recounted receiving a call from his brother-in-law in distress. “They were crying and said their entire house had been swept away. Three family members were rescued, but his brother is still missing,” he said. Also at Nuwakot, teacher Manok Mishra witnessed “nine trucks being swept away by the floods including people”. Among those hunting for their missing family members was Subash Khatani, who told AFP he was looking for his big brother. “He is among the missing from Rasuwa. That’s why we are out to search for him,” he said. Among the missing tourists from more than two dozen countries, 177 were from India, 63 were from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 25 from Canada. Others included tourists from Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa and South Korea, Nepal’s tourism board said. Hiking company Himalayan Glacier told AFP that 47 people from a group, including two children, were missing in Nepal. “Our teams are checking hospitals where victims are coming in,” said the company’s director Sanket Pandey. The sudden rush of mud and debris was “like an inland tsunami, travelling nearly 170 kilometres down the Bhote Koshi valley into Central Nepal”, said environmental historian Ruth Gamble of La Trobe University. “It is a popular route for international tourists travelling from Kathmandu to Lhasa,” she added. “It was a huge gush of mud coming straight towards us,” said Keshav Prasad Baral, a 68-year-old survivor being treated in a Nepali hospital. “As it got closer, it kept rising higher and higher. When I saw it enter our home, I tried to grab my wife’s hand and take her to the terrace. But she was swept away by the mud.” A helicopter ferried him to safety four hours later. “My wife is still somewhere beneath the mud,” he added. “She’s gone.” Another survivor said he saved himself by clinging to a mango tree as he watched the house where he had been working disappear. Rasuwa, in the north of Nepal, was the first district to be affected. But deaths have been reported from seven Nepali districts in total as the floodwaters raged through to Chitwan in the south, on the border with India. “There is devastation everywhere we look,” said Tula Bahadur BK, a health worker in Rasuwa. “The settlements next to the river have been completely swept away. Five of my own relatives are missing.” The Nepali Army was carrying out flights and had rescued scores of people, while others living near the river in danger zones had been told to relocate. China’s leader Xi Jinping said that “the most urgent task is doing everything possible to search for and rescue the missing people”, according to CCTV. Tibet government officials mobilised nearly 800 emergency workers and 150 vehicles as well as sniffer dogs and speed boats to help the rescue efforts, China’s state-run news agency Xinhua said. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said it was dispatching emergency supplies including blankets, first aid kits, stretchers and body bags. “Entire villages and market areas have been wiped out,” said David Fisher, the Nepal head of IFRC. The US State Department said it was sending a disaster response adviser and providing assistance of $500,000. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said details on the disaster were scant. “Nepal … is a developing country,” he said. “It doesn’t have the resources that an event like that would have in Australia, so information is difficult.” UN teams and partners were sending supplies and personnel to support affected Nepali communities, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. Glacial collapse The cause of the disaster was not immediately clear in the hours after it occurred early on Wednesday, but the US Geological Survey said it was a glacial collapse that caused seismic activity and the “catastrophic” downstream impacts in Nepal and Tibet. “This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake,” it said. “Additional analysis of nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite imagery led to the determination that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred.” Climate change is causing glaciers to melt worldwide, increasing the risks of glacial lake floods and glacial collapses. Many trekking companies were not running tours during the monsoon season, but there remain significant numbers of travellers, including pilgrims, in the region. Experts cautioned that a lingering blockage in a river could produce an additional flood. Among sites hit by the flood was Syabrubesi, the gateway to the popular trekking areas, as well as by pilgrims travelling to the base of Mount Kailash, a holy site for Buddhists and Hindus. Traffic authorities in Tibet’s Shigatse said roads in the area were “at risk of mudslides and unsafe for passage”. Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said that he was praying for all those killed in devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet. “I pray for all those who have lost their lives, and offer my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and to all those affected by this tragedy,” he said in a statement.

A huge piece of ice that fell thousands of metres from a glacier into a river below may have unleashed the disaster in Nepal and Tibet that killed at least 180 people. Here is what experts believe happened so far: Glacier collapse A glacier collapse in Nepal’s mountains near Tibet appears to have triggered the disaster. “A large chunk of glacier fell from about 5,200 metres… into a valley,” said Simon Cox, principal scientist at New Zealand’s GNS Science. It “transformed into this raging mass of debris… where it picks up rocks and sediment and trees and anything in the way and fires it on down through the canyon,” he told AFP. The wall of water first impacted a border post, as documented in terrifying CCTV footage showing mud and debris engulfing the area as people fled before it. It then travelled downstream into Nepal, flooding villages and bringing down bridges and buildings. Seismic activity The glacier collapse was large enough to register as a seismic event, initially mistaken for an earthquake. But after further analysis, the US Geological Survey determined “that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred”. The collapse registered as a 5.2-magnitude “seismic event”, which took place at 8:37am local time (7:52am PKT). Estimating just how much of the glacier collapsed will take time, Cox said, but it could range from “half a million cubic metres to tens of million cubic metres”. Soon after the seismic activity was recorded, a nearby water monitoring station stopped transmitting, Nepali authorities said. Stations downstream began going offline one by one, though water was registered reaching up to 12.3 metres high in Kalikhola, near the Tibet border at 2:14pm, they added. A Glof occurs when a fragile debris wall holding back a lake of glacier melt suddenly collapses, unleashing the water behind it. Some experts suggested a Glof might have been involved. “Water does flow within glaciers and flows beneath glaciers,” said Adrian McCallum, a glaciologist at the University of the Sunshine Coast. “But to my mind, the only reason why a large volume of water should all of a sudden flow down a valley is because it has been released,” he told AFP. The falling glacier ice could also have briefly dammed the river, collecting water behind it that was released when it dislodged. Summer glacier melt upstream and monsoon rains would mean the rivers were already high, and the volume of water was also swelled by debris and mud picked up as it travelled kilometres from the initial collapse, added Cox. Warnings Nepali authorities first received word of a flood around 9:00am local time, and began alerting areas along the Bhote Khoshi river to “stay on high alert and stay in safe areas”. But it is unclear how many people received the warning, or how much time they would have had to respond. “The reality is, if you are in a community underneath a large glacier and potentially a glacier lake where a Glof could occur, then to some extent, it’s a ticking time bomb,” said McCallum. Climate change While it is hard to immediately attribute any individual glacial event to climate change, the warming planet is a constant background stress on these ancient ice rivers, experts say. Glaciers are retreating globally, creating disaster risks but also depriving downstream communities of vital water sources. “The biggest way to mitigate the risk would be to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to limit warming,” said Vargo.
