Azerbaijan on Monday denounced a decision by its ally Israel to recognise the World War I massacres of Armenians as a genocide, a move widely seen as a rebuke by Israel to Turkiye. We call on the Israeli government to reconsider this decision,” the foreign ministry added. Azerbaijan and Israel cooperate extensively on defence and security measures. Successive Israeli governments had avoided formally recognising the Armenian genocide, in part to preserve relations with Turkiye, once one of Israel’s closest strategic partners in the region. But since the war in Gaza erupted, Turkiye has regularly accused Israel of committing genocide in the Palestinian territory, an accusation Israel strongly denies. Israeli attacks leave 8 dead in Gaza
GAZA CITY/GENEVA: Gaza’s civil defence said Israeli attacks killed eight people in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday. Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the civil defence agency, which acts as a rescue force under Hamas, said that the eight people were killed in Israeli attacks including airstrikes and gunfire. Nasser Hospital in south Gaza’s Khan Yunis reported receiving four people killed in an airstrike on a tent sheltering displaced people. The victims were aged between 10 and 39, and included one woman, the hospital said. The hospital also received the body of Ahmad Salim, a truck driver who was killed by Israeli fire in Al-Mawasi, in southern Gaza. UN inquiry urges release of doctor detained since Dec 2024 The Israeli military said Salim ran towards soldiers who were questioning other truck drivers, adding that troops opened fire at him “after perceiving an immediate threat”. Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said it received the bodies of two people: a child killed by Israeli fire east of the city and a man killed in an airstrike west of the city. It also said it had received the body of a man killed in an Israeli airstrike on a vehicle in Gaza City. Israel’s military confirmed that it conducted an airstrike there. The military said it was looking into the other incidents. Israel and Hamas trade near-daily accusations of truce violations and the Gaza Strip remains gripped by bloodshed as progress on permanently ending the war remains stalled. UN inquiry A United Nations inquiry on Wednesday expressed concern at reports of abuse against a prominent Palestinian doctor seized by the Israeli military in Gaza in December 2024 and still being held in Israel and urged his release. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, called for the immediate release of Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip. Rights groups and Abu Safiya’s lawyer have said his life is in imminent danger, and he continues to be held without charge, according to the Physicians for Human Rights Israel, an Israeli rights group. “The actions of the Israeli Prison Service guards towards Palestinian detainees raise grave concerns of violations of international law that likely amount to international crimes. Dr. Abu Safiya’s medical condition is the direct result of these actions,” the UN inquiry said in a statement. An Israel Prison Service spokesperson said on Wednesday: “The allegations and characterisations described are false, outrageous, and entirely without factual basis.” The spokesperson did not name Abu Safiya, but the IPS has previously rejected allegations that he and other doctors have been mistreated in prison. On Monday, Abu Safiya’s lawyer alleged that his health was in danger and that he had been subjected to abuse daily. In June, Abu Safiya attended a Supreme Court hearing in Jerusalem via video link and appeared noticeably thinner in the face and around his abdomen. The UN inquiry said the reported conduct of the Israeli authorities towards Abu Safiya reflects a broader pattern of violations that it identified in previous reports. It was here that the first Forum of Regions was held in 2003, and since then work in this area has continued and made a significant contribution to the development of bilateral relations. Our relations are progressing successfully. They are indeed – not in words, but in deeds – of a strategic nature. This is evidenced by the growing trade. Last year, it was almost US$28 billion, 27.8, to be exact, which is fairly good. And in the first five months of this year, it has added over 4 percent, at least according to our statistics. This is a good momentum which shows that we have good prospects, and these prospects are determined, among other things, by investment. Investments today create conditions and benchmarks for the future. In fact, here too we have things to be proud of: we have 70 projects involving Russian enterprises and Russian businesses, totalling around US$30 billion. In this sense, Russia is the largest investor in Kazakhstan’s economy, working in a wide range of areas. Our relations are well diversified and cover the metallurgical industry, engineering, energy, pharmaceuticals, and a number of other areas. Our cooperation in terms of humanitarian ties is also very important. Of course, education is a priority here. Thousands of Kazakhstani citizens study at Russian universities. I want to point out that right here, in Omsk, a branch of the Kazakh National University has opened. We are grateful to you that Russian students have been granted 100 state scholarships – actually, they study for free. We actively cooperate in the world arena; we take most active part in all our regional organisations. This year, Russia chairs the CSTO, and Kazakhstan holds the chairmanship of the EAEU. We have something to talk about and align our positions here too. Direct ties are developing very actively. Our work at the regional level is also very important in this regard. I want to thank colleagues on both sides for their active work. Today’s event is attended by 650 participants, including high- and central-level politicians, governors from both sides, regional leaders, and entrepreneurs. I know that a number of agreements have been prepared and will be signed, as is always the case at events of this kind. Once again welcome, we are glad to see you. I know that you visited a hospital this morning. Omsk for you is not an ordinary place in Russia. I will also speak about it when we talk with the colleagues. President Tokayev’s father was treated here after being seriously wounded in the winter of 1945. This highlights one again the importance we give to preserving the memory of the Great Patriotic War and the contribution of our nations to the victory over Nazism. President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev: Thank you, Mr President, for inviting me to the lovely city of Omsk which holds a special place in Russian history and plays a major role in promoting cooperation between our nations. I literally travelled from Astana to Omsk in a little over 40 minutes, both cities are very close to each other, they are border cities. As it was rightly said today, Kazakhstan and Russia share the longest continuous border in the world. Therefore, this is a border of friendship and cooperation. You said everything right. Indeed, we are very large trade partners. In 2025, our trade amounted to about US$28 billion. Meanwhile, this year’s trends are extremely positive: compared to the five months of 2025, mutual trade showed a good growth in these five months. As for investment, in fact, Russia is coming out on top among investors in our economy. The amount of investments has reached almost US$30 billion. Interestingly, we have jointly selected a pool of 177 promising industrial projects, and 122 of them have already been implemented, while these 177 projects total US$53 billion dollars. This is a significant amount, given the current turbulent geopolitical situation. I would also like to note that we are actively working in the humanitarian field. You mentioned the opening of a branch of the Kazakh National University. This is the first foreign branch of our university, and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you, Mr President, for supporting this project, as well as all other projects, because nothing would have been possible without your political will. And I would certainly like to praise your Government’s active efforts in this area. Regarding education. You said quite correctly that we have high hopes for the Sirius project – the construction of two schools has been launched in Almaty and Astana. Due to the bad weather, 15 cities and districts in the region were left without electricity, and Rostov and several other towns had water supply problems (restored by the morning of July 26). CM visits Swat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi reached Swat on Monday to meet with the martyrs’ families. He was accompanied by Special Assistant for Home Affairs Tariq Saeed, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah and the KP inspector general (IG) of police, according to a statement issued by the CM office. IT is a bitter irony that terrorists struck a protest against violence in Swat on Sunday, causing at least 17 fatalities. Both policemen and civilians were martyred in the atrocity. Reports indicate that a suicide bomber blew himself up near a police station as the anti-terror protest was underway when officers tried to search him. Some media outlets have said the banned TTP has claimed responsibility for the bombing. This bloodbath should lead to thorough counterterrorism action, as the people of Swat — and indeed the rest of KP — deserve to live in an atmosphere free of terrorism and violence. Unfortunately, as pointed out in an exclusive report published in this paper, gaps in training have left LEAs in KP vulnerable to ‘double-tap’ or ‘two-stage’ attacks by terrorists. Moreover, the casualty numbers from July, and the first half of 2026, indicate that a fresh CT strategy is needed to bring down the number of fatalities, and effectively neutralise the threat of terrorism. The fact is that terrorists appear to be operating without fear of consequences, while LEAs are unable to stay ahead of them. A string of recent ‘two-stage’ attacks in KP illustrate this point. The terrorists’ modus operandi involves attacking security facilities, waiting for reinforcements to arrive, and then staging secondary attacks. A number of security personnel have been martyred in these attacks. Police officials say forces lack the training to counter these attacks, while experts also question how terrorists are able to maintain their supply lines. The gaps in training need to be filled so that security forces are able to defend themselves, gain the upper hand over violent elements, and, through better intelligence, break up their networks and thwart their attacks. At present, the terrorism figures, particularly in Balochistan and KP, do not paint a reassuring picture. According to the PICSS think tank, there were over 600 fatalities in July. While the vast majority was of terrorists, over 200 security men, civilians and peace committee members were martyred last month. Balochistan saw the highest levels of violence, while KP was not far behind. Overall, in the first six months of 2026, Pakistan has witnessed over 900 fatalities involving LEAs and civilians. This is far too high a toll, and the state needs to urgently refine its CT strategy to prevent further loss of precious lives. It is a matter of great concern that despite the martyrdom of so many policemen and soldiers, as well as civilians, the state is unable to vanquish the monster of terrorism. Hostile external forces may indeed be creating problems, but as security experts point out, we have failed to secure spaces within our borders where terrorists operate from.
