UAE says investigation launched into diverted flydubai flight
The United Arab Emirates’ chief prosecutor on Thursday ordered an investigation into the incident aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a reported altercation in the cockpit. The state news agency WAM said the attorney general had ordered the probe, adding that “the investigation team has launched its work into the incident” that forced the plane to land in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The investigation will examine the circumstances and motives, including whether it was linked to any militant activity or involved prior planning or direction. UAE judicial authorities have jurisdiction over the incident because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and flies under its flag, the statement said, adding that UAE law applies to crimes committed on board “even if they occur outside the country’s territory”. Passengers described rushing the cockpit after the plane suddenly plummeted, losing around 17,000 feet of altitude in the span of a minute, according to the Flightradar24 website. Airline flydubai said all the passengers — of whom 166 out of 174 were Israeli, according to media reports — were safe, adding that the reasons for the altercation were unknown. The Netanyahu government presents these strikes as preventive, aimed at stopping a larger Turkish encroachment into Syria before it starts. Israel’s concern is Turkey, which, alongside the United States, has become one of the main military and political partners of Syria's post-Assad government. But Abu al-Duhur points to the opposite risk. In the absence of an immediate military threat, strikes aimed at preventing a potential future Turkish deployment may do more to raise the risk of a future conflict than to reduce it. A radar may be physically installed within days, but power supply, communications, calibration, command-and-control integration and the sustainable deployment of personnel would take much longer. "Once Turkish personnel are physically present at an airbase, any subsequent strike on that same facility carries the risk of hitting the troops of a NATO member," he said. "From that perspective, the closing window was political, not technical." The choice of target also supports that assessment. A runway is one of the fastest parts of an airbase to repair. If the objective had been to prevent the capability from emerging at all, Israel could have waited for harder-to-replace equipment to arrive. According to İrez, striking the runway and storage areas was aimed less at eliminating a capability than at establishing a precedent. A radar would matter even if Turkey never fired a shot. It would turn unrecorded Israeli transits into documented events, with time, altitude and route. "What radar changes," İrez said, "is not merely control but the risk of proof." From conduct to intent When Syria shot down a Turkish RF-4E reconnaissance aircraft in 2012, there was still a government in Damascus that, even if imperfectly, accepted responsibility and could be dealt with diplomatically. İrez, then the Turkish Air Force's head of operations, briefed the cabinet during that crisis. Today, he said, Israeli strikes since December 2024 have left Syrian airspace "effectively ownerless." Until recently, Israel even blocked night flights at Syrian airports. Among the most dangerous aspects of the Abu al-Duhur strike, in his view, is that Israel is shifting the threshold for a crisis from actual conduct to intent. "Classical deterrence responds to something the other side has done. Here, the response is to something that has not yet been done," he said. "By moving the crisis threshold to the level of intent, this logic also changes the basis of the rules of engagement. Rules of engagement are tied to observable behavior or a violation. A threshold based on intent leaves the two sides without a common standard." Unannounced Israeli operations near Turkey's border are not new. In 2007, Israeli jets crossed into Turkish airspace and dropped fuel tanks on Turkish soil during a mission to strike a suspected nuclear site near Deir ez-Zor. "The increase in precautions in the region actually began in 2007, despite the good relations at the time," İrez said. "Measures that began as temporary steps in those years have since been expanded and made permanent." The most recent of those steps came after Israel's strikes on T4 last year, when Ankara and Tel Aviv held technical deconfliction talks in Azerbaijan. A channel that one side (Israel) can bypass without warning is hardly a mechanism at all. Restraint, for now Turkey’s 2015 shootdown of a Russian Su-24 is still the most widely remembered case of Ankara enforcing its rules of engagement along the Syrian border, but it was not the first. After the RF-4E crisis, Ankara tightened those rules. Turkish F-16s then shot down a Syrian Mi-17 in 2013 and a MiG-23 in 2014 after airspace violations. At Abu al-Duhur, Turkey chose restraint. Turkey, İrez said, “tracked the flights and took precautions, but refrained from intervening despite the aircraft passing close to the border.” But Ankara's calculation is not purely military. In Turkey, the current tensions are widely attributed to Netanyahu's choices rather than to a permanent rift with Tel Aviv. Israel's election campaign, in which Likud has featured Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on its billboards, is being followed in Ankara and across Turkish media almost as closely as a domestic one. Part of Turkey's restraint reflects a concern that responding would mean taking the bait and handing Netanyahu a crisis to campaign on. That concern is shared inside Israel. When Netanyahu posed in front of a fighter jet to warn of pre-election attacks, the opposition accused him of using military bases as campaign props. Still, that does not mean Ankara's patience is unlimited. As İrez warned, "Operations in Syria based solely on anticipation are creating an atmosphere in which tensions can easily turn into a direct military confrontation." Nor do such strikes solve the problem Israel says it faces. Air power may delay the alleged future deployment, but it cannot stop the growing integration between Turkey and Syria. Ankara's role in Syria goes well beyond a single airbase. Turkey is helping rebuild the Syrian state in areas ranging from its army to its power grid. Syrian units train at Turkish army facilities, Syrian cadets study at Turkish military academies, and Syrian troops joined EFES, Turkey's flagship exercise, for the first time this year. Ankara has supplied armored vehicles, trains Syrian police, and its intelligence service works closely with Damascus. Just 12 days after the Abu al-Duhur strike, and despite Israel's warnings against Turkish moves toward the south, Turkish and Syrian forces completed their second joint floating bridge over the Euphrates in Deir ez-Zor. The rivalry between Turkey and Israel is unlikely to end in the near term. Keeping it from turning into a kinetic conflict in Syria, however, is achievable. Having chosen to give the new government in Damascus a chance, Washington now carries a continuing responsibility to help stabilize Syria and to keep two close allies out of an avoidable conflict. The U.S. has already said it is working on a trilateral deconfliction mechanism. The task now is to turn it into a direct political channel with clear rules on notification, so that future incidents can be managed before they spark a military confrontation.

Plane made emergency landing after pilot tried to crash aircraft, Israeli PM says, as officials investigate whether it was an attempted terror attack One of the pilots of a plane flying from the UAE to Israel stabbed his co-pilot and appeared to try to crash the plane, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said, as Israeli officials said they were investigating whether the incident was an attempted terror attack on Israelis. Here is what we know so far: A commercial plane travelling from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to Israel was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, after an apparent brawl between its pilots prompted distress signals that briefly raised fears of an attempted hijacking. The FlyDubai flight was over Jordan when it diverted to Saudi Arabia, transmitting three emergency signals, one of which indicated a possible unlawful interference. The plane dipped dramatically during the reported fight, descending about 16,000ft in just two minutes. Israeli officials scrambled fighter jets, fearful of a possible hijacking attempt on a plane containing dozens of Israelis, and the plane landed at Tabuk airport in north-western Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu said one of the FlyDubai pilots stabbed his co-pilot and appeared to be intending to crash the plane. He added that one of the passengers on the flight managed to break into the cockpit with one of the crew members, and together they “neutralised” the attacking pilot. Netanyahu described it as “an extremely severe security incident”. Other officials, including the defence minister, Israel Katz, have called it an attempted terrorist attack. Two pilots were wounded after they reportedly fought on board the plane they were flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, and which was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The flydubai plane landed in Tabuk at 9:45 am (11:45am PKT) and its “captain and copilot were found to have injuries and were transported to hospital”, a statement from the company operating the airport said. The low-cost carrier had earlier said flight FZ 1073 “experienced an incident while en route”. “The aircraft has landed safely in Tabuk Airport (TUU) and all passengers are safe and accounted for.” Several Israeli media outlets reported that a fight had broken out between the plane’s pilots, reportedly causing a distress signal to be activated. Israeli media also reported that two other pilots were flying on the plane as passengers, and that they had taken over the controls to carry out the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Neither the airline nor authorities of the countries involved provided details on what happened on board or on the pilots’ nationalities, but some Israeli media said one was Omani and the other Emirati. According to data from the Flightradar website, the aircraft suddenly lost altitude during the flight, dropping from nearly 34,000 feet at 05:21am GMT to less than 17,000 feet at 05:22am GMT (10:22am PKT). The flight from Dubai diverted over Jordanian airspace towards Saudi Arabia, transmitting a general emergency signal before transmitting another emergency signal that indicates a possible unlawful interference several minutes later, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24. The Boeing 737 plane then again transmitted the general emergency signal before landing at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, the website said. There were 180 Israelis on board the plane, according to Israel’s far-right national security minister Ben Gvir, who claimed the incident involved a “terrorist”. ‘Going down very fast’ An AFP correspondent in Tabuk, where the plane landed, saw heavy security near the airport, with several police vehicles and an ambulance parked at the terminal. Access to the terminal remained open. At Ben Gurion airport, families gathered to await the return of their loved ones. Yasmin Abukasis, mother of passenger Miryam Shira Ohayon, told AFP that her daughter called her from Saudi Arabia: “She said one pilot tried to kill the other pilot with a knife. They heard shouting”. Another passenger went to the cockpit “and saw a lot of blood. She started screaming ‘come help’ and some people went in and caught the guy”, she added. “All the while, the plane started going down very fast. People thought they were going to die.” She added that two other pilots in the back later took over the controls. Israeli media, citing anonymous sources, reported that the passengers on board had stepped in to separate the two pilots during their altercation, publishing photos of a passenger with a bloodied T-shirt. Channel 12 reported that authorities were investigating whether or not one of the pilots had attempted a possible suicide by trying to crash the plane, with the other pilot apparently intervening to prevent the crash. In a video from inside the plane that was reposted by Israeli social media users, one passenger, blood dripping from an open wound on his head, pleaded for assistance and said they were descending into Saudi Arabia, with which Israel has no diplomatic relations. “We are here during an attack on the plane. We just subdued the terrorists and are preparing to land,” the man said in Hebrew. Israeli jets scrambled Israel’s Kan public broadcaster, Times of Israel and Channel 12 reported that the Israeli military had scrambled fighter jets after fears of a possible hijacking — with the hypothesis later dismissed. Times of Israel, citing Kan, said the Mossad intelligence agency, Shin Bet and the Israeli military were involved in the investigation into the incident. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged that one of the pilots had planned to crash the plane and kill its mostly Israeli passengers, who stopped a “major disaster”. “During the flight, as they approached the country, one of the pilots stabbed the other pilot, and apparently tried to crash the plane with everyone on board,” Netanyahu said in a video message, calling the passengers “heroes” who “prevented a major disaster”. Netanyahu’s office earlier said he had held consultations on the matter and was “monitoring developments”. “The incident is under control, and all measures are currently being deployed in order to return the Israeli passengers safely to Israel,” a statement said. Meir Zohar, the father of passenger Ido Zohar, told AFP his son had told him by text message that he was well, but that he had no other news. “He told us that everything is okay, he didn’t tell me that much.” Flydubai operates daily flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv, a route that is popular among Israeli nationals. It is not the first time a flight between Israel and the UAE has landed in Saudi Arabia. The unholy alliance
THE Israeli prime minister’s reported secret visit to Abu Dhabi last Sunday has reinforced the growing nexus between the UAE and the Zionist state. It was not the first time that Benjamin Netanyahu had made an unannounced trip to the Gulf country. In March this year, at the height of the Iran war, he travelled there to meet UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan. During the same period, the head of Mossad, Israel’s main intelligence agency, made two trips to the country to apparently coordinate military operations. And last week, while 77 nations boycotted the Israeli prime minister’s speech at the UN General Assembly, the UAE delegation remained seated — a clear show of solidarity with the Zionist state. Since joining the Abraham Accords in 2020, the UAE has not only established diplomatic relations with Israel but has gone much further, elevating the relationship into a de facto alliance — even as the Israeli state was carrying out a genocidal war in Gaza. That relationship deepened as the US, along with Israel, imposed an unprovoked war on Iran. The extraordinary relationship between the two countries marks a developing unholy alliance in a rapidly changing regional order, as America’s war on Iran drags on. The UAE has reportedly carried out its own strikes on Iran and has also borne the brunt of retaliatory strikes — with devastating effect — despite the deployment of the Iron Dome air defence system, run by Israeli military personnel. Its close military cooperation with Israel has drawn the UAE directly into the war on Iran. It is the first time this highly advanced system has been deployed outside Israel and the US, signalling the critical role of the Emirates in a potential Israeli-led regional defence alliance. It is also the first Arab-Israeli relationship to acquire real military and industrial substance. And this Israel-UAE nexus goes beyond the ongoing Iran war: the UAE appears to be a critical part of Israel’s plan to build what Netanyahu calls the “hexagon of alliances”. That idea was pitched by the Israeli prime minister early this year. Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Feb 22, 2026, days before the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Netanyahu presented his vision of creating “a hexagon of alliances around or within the Middle East” — a bloc against what he described as the “radical Shia and emerging Sunni axis”. He named four members — Israel, India, Greece and Cyprus — and left the remaining slots (Arab, African and Asian states) unnamed. But it is widely assumed that the Emirates is one of the six, given its close diplomatic and defence ties with Israel. Netanyahu also pointed to intelligence-sharing and counterterrorism cooperation with India as the core of the project. Modi’s February visit produced a Special Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which have long cooperated on defence and intelligence. Israel is one of India’s largest arms suppliers. The UAE, too, has built close defence ties with New Delhi. All three are part of the four-nation I2U2 grouping, alongside the US, and of IMEC, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. This web of alliances, bound together by bilateral defence relationships, is shaping the emerging security landscape in West Asia and beyond. Although the Israeli-proposed hexagon alliance has not yet taken formal shape, it is widely seen as a potential counter to the Makkah alliance — which Israel portrays, wrongly, as a ‘Sunni alliance’. Netanyahu has repeatedly called Turkiye a greater threat than Iran and a major challenge to his ‘Greater Israel’ ambition. Against this background, the growing Israel-UAE diplomatic and defence cooperation is alarming. Over the past few years, the UAE has drifted away from its Gulf allies on a range of regional and foreign policy issues, above all by widening its differences with Saudi Arabia. The Emirates is accused of arming and financing a separatist group in strife-torn southern Yemen, bringing the UAE into conflict with Riyadh. It is also widely believed to be arming and funding an armed group involved in Sudan’s civil war, one accused of mass atrocities. And it backs Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia recognised only by Israel — while every other Arab state supports a united Somalia. A few months ago, at the height of the Iran war, the Emirates pulled out of Opec, the Saudi-led oil cartel, severely damaging the organisation. Its close military cooperation with Israel has drawn the Emirates directly into the war on Iran, endangering its own security in the process. Any participation in an Israeli-proposed alliance could prove extremely destabilising for the region. Pakistan’s own relations with the Emirates have hit a low over the past few years. Early this year, the UAE withdrew a $3 billion deposit from the State Bank of Pakistan, and once-close ties have become significantly strained. With a large Pakistani workforce in the Emirates, the shift has put Pakistan in a very difficult position, which requires a delicate balancing act. The widening regional divide — in the middle of the Iran war, Israel’s continuing genocide in Gaza and its military actions in Lebanon — is extremely troubling. Israel’s idea of a ‘hexagon alliance’ that also includes India is dangerous for Pakistan’s security, particularly as Israel and India are already tied in a strategic relationship. It is certainly not good news for the Middle East and the wider region, which is being rocked by America’s unending war on Iran. The situation has become much more complicated with the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Last week, the military chiefs of the three allied countries met to discuss the deteriorating situation, and there is talk that Article 5 of the alliance — under which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all — could be activated. Any such move could draw Pakistan directly into the conflict. With a resolution to the Iran war still far off, an expansion of the conflict could render the situation far more explosive. Against this backdrop, the unholy alliance between Israel and the UAE could further destabilise the region, with far-reaching implications. JALUD: More than 100 Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, drawing rare Israeli government condemnation after they injured three members of the security forces. The raid, along with another attack on a different West Bank village on Tuesday, comes amid mounting international criticism of settler violence, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed in an address last week to the United Nations. Settlers stormed the village of Jalud in the northern West Bank as the military attempted to accompany a Palestinian family back to their home after they had been displaced by settler attacks two months earlier. The Israeli military said “more than 100 Israeli rioters” were in the area of Jalud overnight and soldiers and border police tried to disperse them. “As a result of the clashes, three Israel Border Police officers were lightly injured, and a security forces vehicle was damaged,” it said in a statement. One person was arrested and two minors were taken in for questioning, police said. The military said the settlers had blocked roads, set tyres on fire and thrown rocks at security forces, also setting fire to Palestinian buildings and vehicles in the village. It added that the attack had prevented the return of the family, who had been displaced “following several incidents of (Israeli) nationalist crime against them”. ‘No justification’ Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 and has been accelerating settlement expansion there. Some 500,000 Israeli settlers live among three million Palestinians. Netanyahu condemned the attack, which he blamed on “a small group of rioters”. Their actions “cause great harm to that community and interfere with our forces as they carry out their mission”, he said. President Isaac Herzog, who holds a largely ceremonial role, called the attack “a moral stain, an assault on the rule of law and our most fundamental values as a people and a nation”. Such criticism is rare for attacks in which the victims are Palestinian. Settler attacks against Palestinians including beatings, vandalism and arson averaged six a day in the first half of the year, according to the United Nations. Recent weeks have also seen high-profile attacks against Israelis in the West Bank, including the shooting death of a settler by a Palestinian. Israel has voiced outrage and imposed diplomatic repercussions after Britain, the Netherlands and other countries imposed sanctions against products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are illegal under international law. Rising settler ambitions Mahmoud al-Toubasi, a member of the family seeking to return to Jalud, said that he and his relatives had left the house more than two months ago, and that it had been occupied by settlers until the attack on Tuesday. “My wife, my son and I went to the house in the car, accompanied by an army vehicle in front of us and another behind us,” he said. Settlers attacked the group upon their arrival at the house and were pushed back by soldiers with pepper spray, he added. “We were not physically injured, but we suffered some choking from the pepper spray,” Toubasi said. In a separate attack Tuesday, dozens of settlers from hilltop outposts raided the Palestinian village of al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, residents said. Al-Mughayyir is the scene of frequent attacks due to its isolated location and the presence of several settlement outposts all around it. In a separate incident in the town of Beitunia near Ramallah, dozens of settlers came to hold a prayer for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot using loudspeakers, Mayor Ribhi Dawla said. “This gathering is a dangerous precedent,” he said. “There are ambitions for settlements in the area, they placed a caravan in the western part of the town and installed an iron gate.” In another incident on Tuesday evening, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported that its crews were “treating three people who were assaulted and beaten by settlers in the Jamala area near Ramallah” and taking them to hospital.
