İran'da milyonlar Hamaney'e veda ediyor! Peş peşe intikam yeminleri: 'ABD'ye ölüm, İsrail'e ölüm'

MİLLİYET.COM.TR / ABD ve İsrail'in 28 Şubat'ta düzenlediği saldırıda hayatını kaybeden İran'ın eski dini lideri Ali Hamaney için başkent Tahran'da devlet töreni düzenleniyor. Tahran'daki İmam Humeyni Musalla Camisi'nde gerçekleştirilen törene İran'ın farklı kentlerinden ve yurt dışından gelen binlerce kişi katıldı. Tören alanında İran bayrakları taşınırken, geniş güvenlik önlemleri alındı. Devlet töreni kapsamında İran Cumhurbaşkanı Mesud Pezeşkiyan, Meclis Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Galibaf ve Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi, cenazeye katılmak üzere Tahran'a gelen devlet başkanları, meclis başkanları ve özel temsilcilerle bir araya geldi. ‘AMERİKA'YA ÖLÜM, İSRAİL'E ÖLÜM’ İsrail merkezli Ynet haber sitesinin aktardığına göre, cenaze törenine katılan kalabalık sık sık "Amerika'ya ölüm!" ve "İsrail'e ölüm!" sloganları attı. İsrail basını, binlerce kişinin katıldığı törenin yalnızca bir cenaze programı olmadığını, aynı zamanda İslam Cumhuriyeti'nin düşmanlarına karşı düzenlenen bir güç gösterisi niteliği taşıdığını değerlendirdi. Haberde, İran yönetiminin cenaze törenini özellikle ABD'nin bağımsızlığının 250. yıl dönümüne denk gelen 4 Temmuz'da başlatmasının da dikkat çekici olduğu belirtildi. ‘İNTİKAM ALACAĞIZ’ İran Ordu Komutanı Tümgeneral Emir Hatemi, İran devlet televizyonuna yaptığı açıklamada ABD ve İsrail'i hedef aldı. Ertesi gün kılınan cenaze namazının ardından naaşın, Tahran'a yaklaşık 20 kilometre uzaklıktaki Beheşti Zehra Mezarlığı'na götürülmesi planlanmıştı.

Kalibaf, Washington ve Tel Aviv’in savaşın sona erdirilmesine ilişkin taahhütlerine uymaması halinde İran’ın karşılık vereceğini belirterek, 28 Şubat’taki saldırının hedeflerine ulaşamadığını savundu. Kalibaf, İran’ın müzakereleri sürdürmesine rağmen olası yeni saldırılara hazırlıklı olduğunu söyledi. ABD Başkanı Donald Trump ise, İran tarafıyla görüşmelere ilişkin, “Sanırım ihtiyaç duyduğumuz şeylerin neredeyse hepsini kabul ettiler” dedi. Yılmaz, Pezeşkiyan ile görüştü Cumhurbaşkanı Yardımcısı Cevdet Yılmaz, İran Cumhurbaşkanı Mesud Pezeşkiyan ile başkent Tahran’daki Saadabad Sarayı’nda görüştü. Hamaney için düzenlenen devlet törenine katılmak amacıyla İran’a gelen Yılmaz, “Kardeş İran halkının geride bıraktığımız süreçte yaşadığı acıları yürekten paylaşıyoruz. Türkiye olarak, bölgemizde barış ve istikrarın kalıcı hale gelmesi, diyalog kanallarının güçlendirilmesi ve savaşın ardından normalleşme sürecinin desteklenmesi yönündeki çalışmalara katkı sunmayı sürdüreceğiz” ifadelerini kullandı. Mücteba Hamaney’in durumu belirsiz Törenlere katılımı belirsiz olan İran’ın yeni lideri Mücteba Hamaney’in durumu merak uyandırıyor. Babasının öldürüldüğü saldırıdan bu yana kamuoyu önüne çıkmayan Mücteba, halka yalnızca devlet televizyonlarında okunan yazılı mesajlar üzerinden hitap ediyor. Mücteba Hamaney’in güvenlik gerekçesiyle babasının cenazesine katılamayacağı gündeme geldi. İsrail’in Mücteba Hamaney’i öldürme yönündeki tekrar eden tehditlerine karşılık İran ordusundan ise ‘yanlış hesap’ uyarısı geldi. Açıklamada “Ülkemize yönelik her türlü tehdit veya saldırıya, silahlı kuvvetlerdeki İran evlatlarının vereceği sert ve pişmanlık doğuran karşılıkları dikkate almalılar” ifadeleri kullanıldı. Hürmüz pazarlığı Cenaze törenleri sonrası dikkatlerin, yeniden bölgesel diplomasiye ve ABD ile İran arasındaki askıya alınmış görüşmelerin yeniden başlamasıyla Hürmüz Boğazı konusunda alınacak kararlara çevrilmesi bekleniyor. Wall Street Journal (WSJ) gazetesi, Hürmüz Boğazı üzerindeki kontrol iddialarından ve gemilerden ücret alma planından vazgeçmesi karşılığında İran’a dondurulmuş dış varlıklarının bir kısmını serbest bırakmayı önerdiğini yazdı. Teklifi “yetersiz” bulan Tahran ise boğazın kendi denetiminde olduğunu belirtti. İran Meclis ve Müzakere Heyeti Başkanı Muhammed Kalibaf, Hürmüz Boğazı’nın yönetimi konusunda kararlı olduklarını ve ABD’nin müdahalesine izin vermeyeceklerini söyledi. ‘İsrail suikast planladı’ iddiası ABD yönetiminin, İran ile müzakereler sırasında İsrail’in, İran Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi ile İran Meclis ve Müzakere Heyeti Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Kalibaf’a suikast düzenlemeyi planladığına kanaat getirdiği ileri sürüldü. New York Times gazetesinin haberine göre, isimleri açıklanmayan yetkililer, İsrail’in müzakereler devam ederken Arakçi ve Kalibaf’ı suikasta uğratmayı planlamış olabileceğini düşündüklerini ifade etti ve bu endişeyi dolaylı yollarla Tahran’a iletti.Yetkililer, Washington yönetiminin bu iki üst düzey ismin suikastının müzakereleri baltalayacağından endişelendiğini ve planı öğrenmesi üzerine İsrail’den “geri adım atmasını” istediğini iddia etti. Pakistan savaş uçaklarının, İran sınırından İslamabad’a ve geri dönüşte, İran heyetini taşıyan uçaklara eşlik ettiği de ileri sürüldü.

10 shops gutted by fire in Gujrat plaza

-Dawn GUJRAT: At least 10 shops were gutted when a fire erupted in a plaza in the city’s main commercial hub of Muslim Bazaar on Friday. According to Rescue 1122 officials, the shops were closed when fire erupted in the plaza located in a congested area, as Friday is observed as a weekly business holiday here. The officials say that on being called, a Rescue 1122 team comprising 15 firefighters and seven fire engines reached the scene and extinguished the blaze. As per initial findings, they say, the fire was caused by an electric short circuit. Though the exact losses are yet to be estimated, the locals as well as Rescue workers say that commercial goods worth millions of rupees were burnt in the blaze. MURDER: A former schoolteacher and lumberdar was allegedly gunned down by a drug addict on Thursday night at Machiwal village in Daulat Nagar police precincts. As per police sources, Lnumberdar Muhammad Khan was returning home from his outhouse, when the suspect, Raziullah Abbas, of the same village, along with his three accomplices, intercepted him and opened fire. As a result, Khan sustained bullet injuries and was later shifted to Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital (ABSTH), where doctors pronounced him dead. Upon being informed, police and Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) teams arrived atthe village and collected evidence from the crime scene. The police have registered a case against the suspect and his three accomplices, under sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the report of the victim’s son Khizar Hayat, and started investigations. The police, quoting local sources, say the suspect is hooked on ice drug and was earlier jailed in another murder case. However, he was later acquitted due to legal lacuna in the case. However, they say the motive behind the lumberdar’s murder is yet to be ascertained. The victim was a retired school teacher and a prominent figure of the area. This is the second murder during the last 24 hours within the limits of Daulat Nagar police station, as earlier, a 13-year-old boy was found dead in a storm water channel. He was reportedly kidnapped from Khanowal village on Wednesday last. The police say investigation in both the cases is underway. Published in Dawn, July 4th, 2026

Iran calls on US and Israel to abide by interim deal

    • Acting defence minister expresses lack of trust in America • Araghchi questions role of Centcom in regional security • Tehran seeks waiver to sell oil to Japan • Netanyahu, Trump expected to meet soon TEHRAN / WASHINGTON: As the focus shifted to the week-long mourning for late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian officials warned the US and Israel to honour their commitments to end the war in the Middle East. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned on Friday that if the US and Israel do not fulfil their commitments to end the war, then Tehran will respond. “We strongly demand full implementation of the agreements, and if the US and the Zionist regime fail to fulfil their commitments, Iran will resume proportionate actions,” Al Jazeera quoted him as saying. Ghalibaf, who also heads the country’s negotiating team in talks with the United States, added that Washington cannot militarily confront Iran and said Israel’s threats are “baseless propaganda”. Meanwhile, Acting Defence Minister Seyyed Majid Ibn Reza expressed a complete lack of trust in the ‘other party’, saying that Tehran signed the memorandum of understanding with the US to help restore regional stability, at the request of its friendly neighbouring countries, state-run Press TV reported. “However, given the United States’ long history of failing to honour its commitments, Iran has no trust in the other party,” he said, adding that the country’s forces “remain on full alert and will respond proportionately to any violation of the agreement”. Separately, during a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart, he also renewed calls for the creation of a joint security mechanism among Muslim nations, saying that the presence of extra-regional forces has become a source of instability. Reza and Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler reviewed regional developments, the implementation of the June 27 ceasefire agreement between Iran and the US, and ways to enhance defence and security ties between Tehran and Ankara. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi questioned the role of the US Central Command (Centcom) in regional security, arguing that it has actually brought insecurity to the region. “Our powerful armed forces have proven that outsiders cannot even protect themselves. Peace in our region can only be sustained when comprehensive and inclusive, with no outside interference,” he said in a post on X. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Iran has begun talks with Japanese companies under a US sanctions waiver allowing it to resume oil sales, though prospective buyers are seeking a longer waiver and reassurances about ship safety. The waiver, part of 60-day peace talks between Tehran and Washington, was issued on June 22 and expires August 21. Three Japanese buyers were looking at possible crude oil purchases from Iran, their first since 2019, said two Iranian sources, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue. Meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump spoke and agreed to meet “soon” in the United States, the AFP news agency reported on Friday. “The prime minister said in their conversation that the US is a guarantor of global freedom, and Israel greatly appreciates the close ties between nations,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office said. ABD basınından İran temsilcilerine suikast iddiası. "İsrail'in suikastını ABD önledi"

İsrail'in İran heyetine suikast düzenlemeyi planladı ve ABD'nin bunu önlediği iddia edildi. ABD basınına konuşan yetkililere göre, ABD yönetimi İran Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi ile Meclis Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Kalibaf'a yönelik olası suikast planlarına karşı, aracılar üzerinden Tahran'a İsrail'in niyetleri konusunda uyarı ilettiği belirtildi. Amerikan Washington Post gazetesinin, yüksek düzeyli muvazzaf ve eski ABD'li yetkililere dayandırdığı habere göre, Trump yönetimi, İran'daki savaşın sona erdirilmesi ve Hürmüz Boğazı'nın yeniden uluslararası deniz trafiğine açılmasına yönelik diplomatik girişimlerini sürdürürken, İsrail'in İran'ın baş müzakerecilerini hedef almasından endişelendi. Haberde, ABD yönetiminin özellikle İran Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi ile Meclis Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Galibaf'a yönelik olası suikast planlarına şiddetle karşı çıktığı, bu nedenle ilkbahar aylarında aracılar üzerinden Tahran'a İsrail'in niyetleri konusunda uyarı ilettiği iddia edildi. Kimliğinin açıklanmaması kaydıyla konuşan bir ABD'li yetkili, "Bu kişileri öldürürseniz, pragmatistleri de ortadan kaldırmış olursunuz." ifadelerini kullandı. Habere göre, Trump yönetiminin savaşın sona erdirilmesine yönelik diplomatik seçenekleri değerlendirmeye başladığı mart ayından itibaren ABD'li yetkililer, İsrailli muhataplarına İran'ın siyasi liderliğine yönelik suikastların sürdürülmemesi yönünde mesaj verdi. Analistler ise Washington'un İran'a doğrudan uyarı gönderme ihtiyacı hissetmesinin, ABD ile İsrail arasındaki görüş ayrılıklarını ve Trump yönetiminin İsrail hükümeti üzerindeki sınırlı etkisini ortaya koyduğunu değerlendiriyor. Eski ABD Dışişleri Bakanlığı yetkilisi Aaron David Miller, bunun ABD ile İsrail'in savaş hedeflerinin farklılaştığını gösterdiğini belirterek, İsrail Başbakanı'nın, ABD'nin yürütebileceği herhangi bir müzakere sürecini sekteye uğratma konusunda kararlı göründüğünü söyledi. Beyaz Saray'dan bir ABD'li yetkili ise gazeteye "Başkan, barış sürecinin işlemesini istiyor." açıklamasını yaptı. ABD'nin İsrail'in suikast planlarına ilişkin endişelerini daha önce bir diğer Amerikan gazetesi olan New York Times da gündeme getirmişti. Washington Post'un haberine göre, ABD ve İsrail'in İran'a yönelik askeri operasyonlarının başlamasının ardından İsrail çok sayıda İranlı siyasi ve askeri yetkiliyi hedef alırken, ABD ordusu ise İran'ın deniz ve füze kapasitesini zayıflatmaya odaklandı. Haberde, iki ülkenin başlangıçta İran'da rejim değişikliği hedefini paylaştığı ancak ABD'li yetkililerin Tahran'daki siyasi ve askeri yapının iktidarını koruyacağı değerlendirmesinin ardından tarafların hedeflerinin ayrıştığı öne sürüldü. İddiaya göre, İsrail'in mart ayı ortasında İran'ın üst düzey ulusal güvenlik yetkilisi Ali Laricani'yi öldürmesi, Washington ile Tel Aviv arasındaki görüş ayrılıklarını daha da derinleştirdi.

Foreign team makes first 8,000m summit of the summer climbing season in Gilgit-Baltistan

Matteo Della Bordella, Mirco Grasso, Luca Ducoli and Giacomo Mauri at the K7 base camp.—Dawn • Six-member rope-fixing group establishes route to peak • Expedition includes climbers from China, Ukraine, Lithuania, Nepal and Pakistan • Italian team opens a new route on K7’s Southeast Face, but turns back 350 metres below the summit due to dangerous conditions GILGIT: A seven-member international expedition, along with a six-member rope-fixing team, successfully summited Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres) on Thursday, marking the first successful ascent of an 8,000-metre peak in Pakistan during this summer’s climbing season. The summer climbing season in Gilgit-Baltistan typically begins in mid-June and continues until mid-August, with several foreign expeditions currently attempting to scale the region’s high-altitude peaks. The Seven Summit Treks expedition team comprised Tao Hu (China), Antonina Samoilova (Ukraine), Mindaugas Satkauskas (Lithuania), Dawa Sherpa, Dendi Sherpa, Lakpa Temba Sherpa (Nepal), and Abbas Ali Mehdi (Pakistan). Earlier, a six-member rope-fixing team from Seven Summit Treks successfully fixed ropes to the summit. The team included Mingtemba Sherpa, Pasang Dukpa Sherpa, Dawa Rinji Sherpa, and Pasang Nurbu Sherpa of Nepal. In a statement issued on Thursday, Seven Summit Treks congratulated the entire Nanga Parbat Expedition Team on the successful ascent, describing it as the first successful summit of an 8,000-metre peak during the summer season. Renowned Nepali climber and Seven Summit Treks owner Chhang Dawa Sherpa also congratulated the team on their successful ascent. Meanwhile, a four-member Italian expedition has opened a new route on the Southeast Face of K7 (6,934m) in Gilgit-Baltistan. However, the climbers were forced to abandon their summit attempt approximately 350 metres below the top due to dangerous snow and ridge conditions. Despite not reaching the summit, the team completed a demanding 1,600-metre big wall climb over six days. The expedition comprised Matteo Della Bordella, Mirco Grasso, Luca Ducoli, and Giacomo Mauri. The team arrived at base camp on June 3 and launched their attempt on June 11. In an Instagram post, team leader Matteo Della Bordella wrote: “Six days on the wall where we gave all of ourselves: soul and heart for an adventure that will stay inside us forever. A rollercoaster of emotions, 30 pitches, including steep vertical ice, mixed climbing, precarious hooks, and difficult aid climbing. “From June 24 to 29, we climbed 1,600 metres up the huge southeast face of K7. At about 6,600 metres, we reached the southwest ridge and joined the route established by the Japanese first ascent team in 1984. “Our dream was obviously to climb the final 350 metres and reach the summit of K7, but we had to give up because of excessive snow and extremely dangerous ridge conditions, one section of which collapsed before our eyes. We returned to base camp extremely satisfied. We are all safe and still have dreamy eyes after this incredible journey.” The expedition was sponsored by the Italian Alpine Club. The tourism department said 31 mountaineering permits and 39 trekking permits have so far been issued to foreign visitors for the current summer season. Permit issuance will continue until Aug 1. İran lideri Ayetullah Mücteba Hamaney'in babasının törenine güvenlik gerekçeleriyle katılamayabileceği belirtildi. Savaşın ilk günü ABD ile İsrail'in ortak saldırısında İran'ı 37 yıldır yöneten dini lider Ayetullah Ali Hamaney öldürülmüştü. Eski dini liderin cenaze töreni yarın İmam Humeyni Musalla Camisi'nde başlayacak. Hamaney'in naaşının camiye götürülmesiyle Tahranlılar da sokaklara döküldü. Toplanan kalabalık cenazeyi karşıladı ve Hamaney için dualar etti. Cenaze Tahran'dan kalkacak, 7 Temmuz'da Kum'da törenler düzenlenecek. Son olarak Meşhed'de toprağa verilecek. Irak da ülkedeki törenlerin sadece Kerbela ve Necef'te yapılacağını açıkladı. SALDIRI ENDİŞESİ SÜRÜYOR İran ordusu, Hamaney'in cenaze töreninde olası bir saldırıya sert karşılık verileceği yönünde uyardı. Bugün de devlet başkanları, üst düzey yetkililer ve dini liderlerin katılımıyla uluslararası resmi anma töreni düzenlenmesi planlanıyor. Govt asked to undo ‘reconstruction’ at Taxila sites

THE reconstruction work, carried out over old walls, is easily discernible at the Mohra Moradu site.—Dawn • Unesco seeks record of renovations at Mohra Moradu and Sirkap, warns of their relegation to ‘danger list’ • Punjab archaeology department defends ‘interventions’ as conservation measures to protect vulnerable archaeological remains ISLAMABAD: The UN’s cultural arm, Unesco, has asked the government to reverse the “reconstructions” that undermined the integrity of two historical sites in Taxila, warning that a failure to take such action would result in their being placed on the agency’s ‘danger list’. Sources in the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture told Dawn that, in a recent meeting on the issue, Unesco told senior government officials that it had “delisted” a World Heritage Site in Germany and would not hesitate to “delist” Taxila over the recent “unnecessary interventions” that compromised the integrity and authenticity of these places. It said the UN agency would “delist” Taxila from its World Heritage List if the actions were not reversed. The issue came into the spotlight in March after a third party shared information and pictures with Pakistan’s Permanent Delegate to Unesco in Paris, highlighting reconstruction works by the Punjab archaeology department at Mohra Moradu and Sirkap. The visitor observed interventions that could affect the authenticity and integrity of the property, specifically original walls being replaced with new construction or their height being raised. Subsequently, Unesco cautioned that unnecessary interventions compromised the authenticity and integrity of these sites and could put them at risk of being placed on the Unesco ‘danger list’. Photos seen by Dawn showed that fresh masonry works had replaced some ancient walls. In some instances, reconstruction was carried out to increase the height of the walls “in the name of conservation”, but it was easy to discern between old stones — which are irregular in size — and modern building material, which seems polished and uniform in size. Technical visit Against this controversy, a joint technical visit was conducted on June 12 by Unesco, the Department of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM), and the Ministry of National Heritage and Cultural Division to Taxila Museum. During the visit, the Punjab archaeology department had arranged a presentation for the delegation to justify their stance. Unesco had requested the specific documentation regarding Mohra Moradu and Sirkap pertaining to the conservation and restoration works, the official said, adding that it also sought copies of the heritage impact assessment report, comprehensive photographic documentation of the archaeological structures before and after restoration, and drawings of the proposed intervention in the core zone and the buffer zone of Mohra Moradu. The team also sought laboratory test reports of materials used in conservation works and compatibility studies of new materials with original fabric, besides asking for any archaeological excavation/investigation report and archival research study. “The Punjab archaeology department has not responded yet,” an official told Dawn. “Restoration and using cement to erect walls of World Heritage sites is a serious violation of Unesco rules for conservation of archaeological monuments of historical value. This weakens Pakistan’s position, which is endeavouring to have 24 more sites of historical importance included in Unesco’s World Heritage list since 1997,” the official added. The request from DOAM to enlist Rani Ghat and Bhanbhore had been accepted by Unesco, said the sources, adding that the Unesco World Heritage Committee meeting was scheduled in the third week of this month, where this controversy could hurt Pakistan’s chances for fresh sites. ‘Inaccurate characterisation’ When contacted, Punjab archaeology department Director General Malik Zaheer Abbas said that characterising the ongoing work at Sirkap and Mohra Moradu as “reconstruction” was not accurate. “The interventions being undertaken are conservation measures based on internationally accepted conservation principles, with the primary objective of stabilising vulnerable archaeological remains, preventing further deterioration, and preserving the authenticity and integrity of these World Heritage properties,” the senior official said. During a recent visit by international and national experts, the delegation was provided with a comprehensive technical briefing on the ongoing works “since we believe in transparency and accountability”, he said. The DG said the delegation was able to inspect the sites and engage in detailed discussions with the conservation team. “At present, there is no question of ‘reversing reconstruction’ because the works are conservation interventions, not reconstruction,” the official said. This is not the first time a site of historical significance has been under threat of being relegated to the “danger list”. In 1998, Bhir Mound, adjacent to the Taxila Museum, was placed on the list after then PML-N MNA Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan approved the construction of a stadium at the site. After an outcry, the project was later shelved. Published in Dawn, July 2nd, 2026

PM Shehbaz to visit Iran, Turkiye as part of mediation efforts to end Middle East war: sources

ISLAMABAD: As part of Pakistan’s efforts to help broker an end to the war in the Middle East, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will pay official visits to Iran and Turkiye from July 3 to 6, sources in the PM Office told Dawn on Monday. The US military said it carried out new strikes on early Sunday on multiple targets in Iran, in response to a fresh Iranian attack on a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran responded by launching strikes against US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait before both sides agreed to halt attacks. Sources said that during his visit, the prime minister will meet the leadership of both Iran and Turkiye and call on Tehran and Washington to exercise restraint, particularly following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the peace process. The strikes underscored the fragility of the Pakistan-brokered interim peace deal aimed at ending a war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rattled global energy markets. Yesterday, Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, said that “we should reach a new framework that includes all countries in the region and without the presence or interference of any country from outside the region”. This echoed a proposal put forward by Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this week, who called for a new “regional security structure” among regional countries. Pezeshkian floated the concept during a visit to Pakistan, where he expressed gratitude to PM Shehbaz and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts to bring about an end to the war.

Swiss talks hang in the balance as tit-for-tat strikes rattle Mideast

    • US hits Iranian targets after tankers come under fire • IRGC hits US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain in retaliation • Negotiators expected to meet in Doha this week to discuss Hormuz control • Araghchi asserts sovereignty over vital waterway; seeks collective security framework for Gulf states • IRGC vows to make America ‘feel the pain’ after Trump threat Iran will ‘no longer exist’ WASHINGTON: The ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at ending their confrontation seem to hang in the balance, after developments over the weekend seemed to throw a spanner in the works. Iran did not take part in technical talks slated for Sunday due to recent attacks on the country and unfulfilled conditions of the MoU with the United States, a member of the Supreme Leader’s Office told Iranian state TV on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal, CNBC and NBC News reported on Sunday that negotiations scheduled to continue in Switzerland had been postponed amid the renewed hostilities. US outlet Axios, however, quoted a senior US official as saying that both sides had agreed to stop strikes against each other. The two sides are now expected to meet in Doha tomorrow (Tuesday) to work out their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, the outlet reported. The Tuesday talks were originally set to happen in Switzerland to address Iran’s nuclear programme, but the escalation over the weekend necessitated they be moved to a different venue and refocused them on the Strait of Hormuz. Nick Stewart, who heads the US technical team, is expected to participate in the talks, Axios reported. Diplomats ‘still in Switzerland’ In Washington, Dawn learnt from diplomatic circles that the negotiations were currently “on hold”, but representatives from both countries remained in Switzerland in anticipation of a political decision to resume discussions. “No one expected these talks to be easy or to conclude quickly,” one source said. “Pakistan and other mediators succeeded in convincing both Iran and the United States to begin talking to each other. But negotiations on the substantive issues were never going to be easy. There are many hurdles and many detractors. The encouraging aspect is that both sides recognise that war is not a solution, which is why they need to remain engaged,” a diplomatic source told Dawn. Threats and attacks The diplomatic setback came after tit-for-tat attacks, and a stark warning by President Donald Trump, who said the US would be forced to “militarily complete the job” if strikes in the Hormuz continued. In a post on Truth Social, he accused Iran of violating the “ceasefire agreement again”. “There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!” According to US Central Command, American fighter aircraft struck 10 Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz after a drone attack damaged the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker M/T Kiku, which was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil through the strategic waterway. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said it had launched missile and drone operations targeting US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, in response to recent strikes against Iran. A US official, confirming the attacks on its facilities, told Reuters there were no American casualties, or major damage reported, but the situation was still unfolding. Hours later, alarms sounded for a second time in Bahrain, with the authorities saying an Iranian attack damaged a residential building in Muharraq province. The IRGC, meanwhile, said that American bases in the region “will experience hell in the coming days”, warning the US that violating the ceasefire “will result in the complete halt of all diplomatic processes”. During negotiations in Switzerland, the US delegation agreed to establish a “hotline” between the US military and the IRGC to coordinate traffic in the strait. As of Saturday, Axios reported, the “hotline” still wasn’t operational, even as Iran claimed that ships need to coordinate passage. Increase in tensions During a visit to Iraq, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any challenge to the country’s control of the strait would increase tensions. “Any attempt to adopt new or separate arrangements compared to what is underway by the Islamic Republic of Iran will only lead to more complicated situations and delays in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and will increase the tensions, as we witnessed in the past two nights,” Abbas Araghchi told a news conference in Baghdad. “The Strait of Hormuz remains under the total oversight and management of Iran through the 30 coming days, and after all obstacles are removed, the total capacity of the waterway will be restored. This is what we are working on,” he added. “This responsibility rests on the Islamic Republic of Iran. There is no other party or state in this respect. This is totally clear under the memorandum of understanding and any intervention or any unilateral action will result in exacerbating the situation and also delay the reopening of the strait.” The Iranian minister also called for the establishment of a security framework with Gulf countries, after Iranian strikes against US bases in the Gulf in retaliation for American attacks, AFP reported. “We should reach a new framework that includes all countries in the region and without the presence or interference of any country from outside the region,” Araghchi said. It may be noted that Washington has been promoting a southern lane along the coast of Oman, while Tehran, which ultimately aims to charge fees for use of the strait, wants ships to use a northern route through its waters and under its control. After tit-for-tat attacks, Iran FM warns any challenge to Hormuz routes will 'increase tensions'

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Sunday that any attempt to bypass the Strait of Hormuz routes agreed with the United States would “increase tensions” in the Middle East, as the countries traded attacks and accusations of violating a fragile ceasefire in the region. Araghchi’s warning came after the US military said it carried out new strikes on early Sunday on multiple targets in Iran, in response to a fresh attack on a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran responded by launching strikes against US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. The exchanges underscored the fragility of a Pakistan-brokered peace process aimed at ending a war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rattled global energy markets. “Any attempt to adopt new or separate arrangements compared to what is underway by the Islamic Republic of Iran, will only lead to more complicated situations and delays in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and will increase the tensions, as we witnessed in the past two nights,” Araghchi told a press conference in Baghdad later. During his visit to the Iraqi capital, Araghchi also called for the establishment of a security framework with Gulf countries, with Tehran and Washington accusing each other of violating the fragile truce that was meant to end the Middle East war. Araghchi called on all parties to “adhere to the memorandum of understanding and not to allow this MoU to deviate from its course”. Iran’s top diplomat said that “we should reach a new framework that includes all countries in the region and without the presence or interference of any country from outside the region”. This echoed a proposal put forward by Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this week, who called for a new “regional security structure” among regional countries. He welcomed Iraq’s call to hold a meeting between the Gulf States, Iran and Iraq, which was drawn into the Middle East war from the beginning. Iraq is expected to hold on July 8 funeral processions for Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated during attacks by the US and Israel on the first day of the war. Following the US strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Sunday they were taking measures to control traffic in Strait of Hormuz and that violating vessels would be dealt with more firmly than before. The only authorised passage by Tehran passes through a corridor running along Iran’s coast. Vessels have continued to use a non-Iranian-approved passage in the strategic waterway, tracking platforms showed on Friday. A day earlier, the IRGC said that Oman and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) announced the new corridor without consulting Tehran, and warned vessels against using it. In the Islamabad MoU, Iran had previously agreed “safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge, for 60 days only, from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman, and vice versa” in the strait. H.A. Hellyer, of London think tank the Royal United Services Institute, said, “Iran is likely to continue calibrated, low-level coercive activity in and around the Strait of Hormuz… to create persistent pressure on international shipping without triggering a wider conflict.” He said November’s US midterm elections for Congress give Washington “incentives for a quicker agreement” while, for Iran, “a drawn-out negotiation accompanied by controlled pressure in the strait can work to its advantage”. Iran targets US bases in Gulf Earlier on Sunday, Iran said it carried out a third day of retaliatory strikes after the US carried out multiple attacks on Iranian territory, as both accused the other of violating their fragile ceasefire. US Central Command (Centcom) said the strikes were in response to an Iranian drone attack on the Panama-flagged oil tanker “Kiku”, which was carrying some two million barrels of crude. The US military said its operation targeted “surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities”. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said explosions were heard in Sirik in southern Iran, without providing details. The IRGC said, “America’s blind shots at Sirik will not resolve our dominance over the Strait of Hormuz. But our shots at violators will remind the rest of the vessels of the clear passage route.” The IRGC said in a statement that the US strikes had violated the ceasefire and “will result in the complete halt of all diplomatic processes”, according to state-run Press TV. The IRGC navy command said American bases in the region “will experience hell in the coming days”. The IRGC also said it had carried out retaliatory strikes in Kuwait and Bahrain. In a statement, it said the strikes “destroyed eight important US military facilities at the Ali al-Salem base in Kuwait and at the Fifth Fleet naval base in Port Salman in Bahrain”. “Any enemy aggression, whatever the pretext, even against insignificant targets… will have a crushing response,” the IRGC warned. Air raid sirens rang out twice in Bahrain on Sunday, according to the Gulf nation’s interior ministry. A US official, confirming the attacks on US facilities, told Reuters there were no reported US casualties or major damage to US sites in the Middle East but that the situation was still unfolding. Hours later, alarms sounded for a second time in Bahrain, with the authorities saying an Iranian attack damaged a residential building in Muharraq province, with no casualties reported. Bahrain urged the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent session to hold Iran accountable. The Kuwaiti army said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles with no damage or casualties. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was reached between the US and Iran on June 18 under Pakistan’s mediation, aimed at putting a lasting end to the war. The text signed by the United States and Iran said both countries, and their respective allies, were “not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other”. Washington had carried out similar strikes on Friday, saying they were a response to an earlier Iranian attack on another vessel, the “Ever Lovely”. Iran would ‘no longer exist’ US President Donald Trump early on Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened that Iran would “no longer exist” if the United States is “forced” to resume the war. The threat came after US forces said they struck “multiple” Iranian targets Saturday in another tit-for-tat response to attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. “United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!” Trump wrote. Lebanon threats On Saturday, Israel launched strikes in Lebanon as Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem rejected a deal to end that conflict, which has also threatened to derail the wider US-Iran peace effort. Iran called “these brutal attacks… a blatant violation” of the interim truce deal. Lebanon, from where Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in support of Iran, has been invaded and heavily bombarded by Israel, undermining the US-Iran ceasefire. Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement on Friday, supported by the US, aimed at securing long-term peace between the two countries. Hezbollah’s chief Qassem rejected the deal a day later, calling it “humiliating, shameful and a surrender of sovereignty”. He instead called for the full implementation of Washington’s deal with Tehran, which includes an end to the fighting in Lebanon. Hezbollah has repeatedly called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Washington deal does not appear to provide for that. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted Israeli troops will remain in the so-called security zone they occupy in southern Lebanon, with civilians prevented from returning until Hezbollah is disarmed. The Israeli premier called the deal historic on Saturday and “a blow to Iran and Hezbollah”. But Netanyahu’s far-right security minister Itamar Ben Gvir denounced it as “a big mistake” and insisted that only Israeli forces were capable of disarming Hezbollah.

Watching like hawks, scouts guide Muharram processions with devotion in Karachi

Scouts lead the main ninth Muharram procession in the metropolis on Thursday.—Online KARACHI: It is Muharram 9 and all the stakeholders, Sindh police, Rangers and the various scout groups, are on their toes since morning, especially at the entry points of the main procession routes lined with containers. Although Supreme Council Member and Management Secretary of Abul Hassan Scouts, Syed Zafar Hussain Rizvi, relieved his junior scouts, he stayed on duty throughout the night. “I slept here at our camp because I did not want to leave myself. But that is what I like to do to stay on top of things,” he told Dawn. About his Scouts group he said that they are a group of some 350 males and 150 females, who also include children. “My own three sons, Aun, Haider and Moon, and daughter, Syeda Mahnoor Zehra and her toddler son, are on duty today and tomorrow,” he says while catching my expression on finding out about the toddler ‘on duty’. “Syed Mujtaba Ali is two-year-old and probably the youngest scout here. We also got a scout’s uniform like this stitched for him,” the grandfather pointed to his own sage green uniform. Comprising all age groups, around 22 to 25 scout units perform duties at key Karachi locations and entry and exit points during majalis “It is good to start early. We also started our Muharram scout duties when we were young, well, perhaps not so young. Of course, Mujtaba cannot do much but he will be taking in the sights and sounds for now,” he said. Asked if it isn’t risky to be out and about at this time? Don’t they think that the children at least should be spared until they are older? What if… “What if what?” Zafar Hussain asked. “If anything were to happen, it will happen and if we meet our end this way, it will mean shahadat [martyrdom]. What better way to go? Shahadat is our virsa [legacy]. It has come to us through Imam Husain,” he stated. At the major entry point, in the Khudadad Society office area, there are another two Supreme Council Members supervising things. Kamran Rizvi of Al Haider Scouts and Zia Abbas of Abul Qasim Scouts. It is explained by them that there are some 22 to 25 scout groups on duty during Muharram, and especially during Muharram 8, 9 and 10. The planning for scout movements, who work in coordination with the police, Rangers and other government departments, starts over a month in advance. “There is the Scouts Rabta Council, which has a five-member Supreme Council that looks into civic issues, security issues, logistics, communication with police IGs, DIGs, the Commissioner, Rangers, ministers,” it is explained by Zia Abbas. “And while doing so, they also look at the previous year’s problems, where we went wrong and how the negligence or mistakes can be prevented this time,” Ali Asghar Rizvi, operations in-charge with Jaffar Tayyar Scouts Group, cut in. “There are also practice and training sessions, especially for our medical teams who are on standby at all the city’s major hospitals. They are ready for any emergency with medical supplies and blood,” he said, before hopping over to the other track of the main road to speak to the bomb disposal squad there. At Numaish, there is Syed Ahmed Ali Shah with Al Haider Scouts, who said that this year, he also has his wife, Muskaan Shah, doing girl guide duty nearby. “Besides, I also have my nephews volunteering here,” he said, while explaining that they are mostly involved in facilitating traffic and pedestrians. Group Scout Leader Nazar Abbas, of Abu Talib Scouts, at Soldier Bazaar No 3, said that scout groups on Muharram 8, 9 and 10 are like army commandos. “Unarmed, we march at the front of all Muharram processions, directly in line of all threats and dangers,” he said. “The police and Rangers are behind us,” he added, while frisking the people entering through the scaffolding dividers leading up to the metal detector gates. Near him there are teenage scout brothers Mohammad Jon Abbas and Mohammad Aun Abbas doing the same with Mohammad Murtaza who is also quite young. “Not that young, we are Rovers,” Jon informed, pointing to their uniform badges. “We joined scouts when we were under 12. At the time we were handed our Shaheen badges. But after 12, we earned our Rover badges,” he said. Listening to them, their leader Nazar Abbas smiled. “When I joined scouts, which was over 45 years ago, my seniors also gave me the Shaheen badge but they used to call me ‘Pappu’,” he smiled as the others had a difficult time suppressing their giggles. Minor girl’s rape, murder: Police trying to save ‘other culprits’: victim’s family

SARGODHA: An uncle of the minor girl, who was raped and murdered in Sargodha on June 23, as well as the family of suspect Arsalan, who was killed during an encounter, have separately alleged that the police have let some other suspects, including the owner of the shop where the crime was committed, off the hook during investigation. Sargodha city police had registered a case on the complaint of victim’s father Naeem who stated in the FIR that when his daughter, Mantaha Zahara (8), did not return home from the market, he and some others started searching her. During the search, they also went to the nearby grocery store, owned by one Hanif. On being asked about the girl, the shop owner reluctantly revealed that Arsalan, a helper at the shop, had taken her to the upper floor, where the victim was later found raped and murdered. The victim’s father had initially nominated four suspects – Arsalan, Abbas, Hanif and his son Ehsan Ali. Later, Arsalan was allegedly killed by his associates during an “encounter” with a CCD team. However, Shahid, a paternal uncle of the victim, expressed his dissatisfaction over the police investigation, alleging they were favouring the shopkeeper and his son and also omitted the name of a fifth “culprit” from the FIR. A CCD official, seeking anonymity, told Dawn that initially the police registered FIR No 103 of the rape and murder incident on June 26, and later another FIR No 104 was registered. He says that FIR 104 states that the earlier FIR was about the escape of Arsalan from the CCD custody. He said now the police high-ups were handling the case investigation. Meanwhile, Arsalan’s parents have also alleged that their son was made a scapegoat, whereas the police are saving the “real culprits” because they were influential. The DPO and SP investigation were not available for their comments as they were busy in Muharram security arrangements. raped: Sargodha police have registered a case against a youth for alleged sexual abused and rape of two children and recording video of the heinous crime. According to police sources, in Jholpur Bangla village of Mela town, Sargodha, a youth ‘M’ lured a 10-year-old boy and another 12-year-old boy to a deserted compound. As the suspect was allegedly subjecting both boys to sexual abuse and rape, besides recording the episode, a child’s uncle, Abid Hussain, arrived at the scene. On seeing Abid, the suspect left the children and escaped. The Mela police registered a case. Published in Dawn, June 26th, 2026

Indian Sikh pilgrims depart after offering religious rituals for two days

TAXILA: The over 300 Sikh pilgrims who arrived from India this week to commemorate the 187th death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, departed for Kartarpura on Thursday after offering religious rituals at Gurdwara Punja Sahib Hassanabdal. It is an emotional homecoming to a land that occupies a central place in Sikh history and spirituality. As dawn breaks over the centuries-old city of Hassanabdal, the tranquil atmosphere surrounding Gurdwara Punja Sahib begins to resonate with the melodious recitation of Gurbani. The sacred hymns, carried gently by the morning breeze, blend with the footsteps of hundreds of devotees who have travelled across borders in search of a deeper connection with their faith. The Sikh pilgrims were sponsored by three different Sikh bodies, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Amritsar, Haryana Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HGPC) and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Board (DSGMB). Officials of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and the local administration said comprehensive arrangements had been made to facilitate the pilgrims during their stay. Accommodation, transportation, medical assistance and security measures were ensured to provide a comfortable and secure environment for the visitors. Many of the visitors, most of them elderly and undertaking their first pilgrimage to Pakistan. “This feels like our second home,” remarked Jatha leader and member Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Khushwinder Singh Bhatia as he reflected on the deep spiritual bonds that connect the Sikh community to Pakistan. “For Sikhs around the world, the region is not merely a geographical location but the cradle of their faith, housing some of Sikhism’s most sacred sites”, he added. Another SGPC member, Harjinder Kaur, described the pilgrimage as a profoundly spiritual experience. She said the pilgrims had come carrying a message that transcends political boundaries, a message of peace, friendship, harmony and mutual respect among people of different faiths and cultures. The pilgrimage coincides with the remembrance of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the visionary ruler who united Punjab under the Sikh Empire in the early nineteenth century. Revered by many Sikhs as a symbol of courage, religious tolerance and statesmanship, his legacy continues to command respect across South Asia. Beyond the religious ceremonies, the gathering serves as a reminder of the enduring cultural and spiritual ties that have survived the passage of time and the drawing of borders. At a time when divisions often dominate headlines, the scenes at Punja Sahib present a different narrative, one where faith builds bridges and shared heritage fosters understanding. Deputy Secretary Shrines of the ETPB, Faraz Abbas, said every effort had been made to ensure that the pilgrims could perform their religious obligations in a peaceful and dignified manner. As the sacred hymns continue to echo through the marble courtyards of Punja Sahib, the pilgrims bow their heads in devotion, carrying with them prayers, memories and a renewed connection with their spiritual roots. For many, the journey may last only a few days, but the emotional bond forged with the land of their Gurus is likely to endure for a lifetime. Published in Dawn, June 26th, 2026

Rubio warns of ‘chaos’ if Hormuz tolls imposed

    • US rejects any tolls on shipping through the strait • Secy of state extends security reassurances to Gulf allies • Iran warns ships against crossing Hormuz without authorisation • UN halts strait evacuation plan after ship reports attack • Tehran slams Nato chief’s comments on US support in war • Ghalibaf taunts US, says it ‘only exports GMO soya bean, broken promises and trash talk’ WASHINGTON / TEHRAN: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Thursday that Washington wanted a lasting deal with Iran but not “at any price”, as disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, possible transit fees and authorised shipping routes threatened to complicate negotiations between the two sides. Rubio was in Bahrain as part of a regional tour of Gulf partners hit hard by Iran during the Middle East war, which began on Feb 28 with a massive US-Israeli campaign of strikes against Iran. The United States and Iran have signed a preliminary deal to end the conflict and have embarked on negotiations expected to touch on thorny issues, including Tehran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and global energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The Gulf states and Israel have long voiced concerns about Iran’s support for proxies in the region and its missile programme, but it remains unclear whether these issues will be addressed in the negotiations. “While we want a deal, we don’t want a deal at any price,” Rubio told a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Bahrain. “We want to ensure… that there is no part of this deal that’s undertaken that in any way undermines the security, the stability, or the prosperity of any of our partners in the Gulf region,” he said. Hormuz toll row Rubio also sought to reassure the energy-rich Gulf states that the Strait of Hormuz, which they have relied on for decades to export oil and liquefied natural gas, would remain toll-free. Iran imposed a blockade of Hormuz during the war as part of its retaliation against the US-Israeli campaign, sparking a global economic shock. It has since said it plans to introduce what it terms maritime service fees, while the United States and its allies have rejected the introduction of fees or tolls, arguing that Hormuz should be considered an international waterway and therefore not subject to charges. “International waterways do not belong to any nation state. This is a foundational principle in the world today, without which the world would be in total chaos,” Rubio told the GCC meeting. “If in fact we accepted that you can charge money to use an international waterway because it happens to be near your territorial space, well then this will spread throughout the world like a contagion,” he added. Rubio said there was “zero support” among Gulf countries for Hormuz tolls. “I mean, ultimately there’s not going to be any fees or tolls. They [Oman] were there in the meeting today and they said that they are not in favour of the tolling system,” he said. At Thursday’s Gulf meeting with Rubio, Oman’s top diplomat Badr Albusaidi said future arrangements regarding the strait “do not entail the imposition of any transit fees”, despite his government and Iran saying earlier that they were studying costs to be charged for services provided in the strait. On Wednesday, Oman released a map of a new temporary shipping route running close to its coast. It said the path through the strait was coordinated with the International Maritime Organisation, a UN agency responsible for marine safety. Iran later appeared to denounce the new corridor in a statement by the Revolutionary Guards, but did not refer to Oman specifically. Iran warns ships Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Thursday warned against any crossings of the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation, saying vessels not complying “will be dealt with”. “The only authorised route for passage through the Strait of Hormuz is the route announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said the Guards. Any crossing without authorisation was “unacceptable and extremely dangerous”, they warned in a statement. They also denounced what they said was a new route through the waterway announced by “certain authorities”. The statement did not elaborate, but it appeared to be a response to Oman’s announcement of a temporary corridor. The only route currently authorised by Iran runs through a corridor that follows the Iranian coast. The foreign ministers of Iran and Oman also stressed the need for continued bilateral coordination on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call on Thursday, Iranian state media reported. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart Badr Albusaidi discussed recent regional developments, including maritime arrangements in the strait and temporary measures set for a 60-day period, according to a statement on Araghchi’s Telegram account. The two sides also welcomed recent talks held in Muscat and agreed to continue diplomatic consultations and technical coordination on issues of mutual interest. Shipping risks Meanwhile, the evacuation of around 11,000 mariners stranded by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was suspended on Thursday after an attack on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) said. The UN’s maritime agency said earlier this week it would begin evacuating 600 ships and their crews that were trapped by the US-Iran war, after Washington and Tehran agreed a preliminary deal to end the conflict. But a cargo ship was damaged by an unknown projectile off the Omani coast in the strategic strait on Thursday, prompting the IMO to halt the operation. Traffic through the strait has increased sharply but remains at roughly half its peacetime level, officials said on Thursday as stranded sailors made their way out of the waterway. Seventy confirmed crossings were recorded on Wednesday, according to analytics firm Kpler, marking the highest number of vessels in a day since Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz on March 1 in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes. Iran hits back at Nato Iran has emerged emboldened from the war, vowing not to relinquish control of Hormuz and calling its initial deal with Washington to stop the fighting “a declaration of America’s defeat”. President Trump met Nato chief Mark Rutte at the White House on Wednesday and said the United States was “doing great” in the negotiations. Trump also asked Congress for nearly $88bn in supplemental funding, mostly to cover the cost of the war, just a day after Congress called on him to end the conflict unless lawmakers explicitly authorised further military action. Iran slammed Nato on Thursday after Rutte noted its support for the US, with foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei accusing the transatlantic bloc of “complicity” in an “unlawful war”. Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also rejected US claims that Iran would spend its unfrozen assets to buy US agricultural products. “The US only exports GMO soya beans, broken promises and trash talks,” Ghalibaf said in a post on X. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed Trump on Wednesday and insisted that a large percentage of Iran’s unfrozen assets would be used to buy US foods and medicine, even as Iran says it would determine its spending. Gulf concerns The Gulf’s top diplomats said on Thursday that dealing with Iran’s proxies and missiles was key to lasting peace and that any trade and investment with Tehran would be reversible and contingent on it respecting its deal with the US. “The ministers further emphasised that lasting regional peace and security requires addressing the full spectrum of Iran’s threats, including its ballistic missiles, drones, and support of proxies in the region,” they said in a joint statement. Told Iran that Italy never authorised use of bases for actions of war - Tajani

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 25 - Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Thursday that he has told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that Italy did not allow its bases to be used by American forces for combat operations after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sparked controversy by saying some 500 US flights took off from them during the Iran war. The Italian defence ministry said Rutte's comments were misleading as it only authorized the bases to be used for ordinary logistic operations and it denied Washington permission for its bombers to use the Sigonella air base in Sicily in March. Nevertheless, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqei said the NATO chief's remarks suggested Italy "colluded" in the war. "I have spoken with the Iranian Foreign Minister @araghchi," Tajani said via X. "Italy has never taken part in any military initiative and has never authorized the use of bases for actions of war against Iran, within the strictest respect of the treaties with the United States. "(In the conversation) I requested a return to full opening of the Strait of Hormuz, facilitating the passage of all Italian cargo ships still blocked. "The reopening of the Italian embassy in Tehran is a strong signal of dialogue, also in view of the resumption of economic and cultural relations". (ANSA). Read article...

A graphical interpretation of Izzat Lakhnavi reciting nohas alongside his group: Lakhnavi’s recitation of ‘Ab aaye ho baba’ remains his magnum opus [Advance with utmost reverence and decorum, For this is the procession of the Martyr of Karbala. Lifted is the earthly remains of the King of Faith, Whose [blessed neck] was severed by the blade of Shimr] — The voice of the naqeeb [heralder] in Muharram mourning processions “Grief is the price we pay for love.” — Queen Elizabeth II From the dust of Pakistan’s independence in 1947 emerged a sonic revolution that would permanently rewrite Karachi’s spiritual DNA. Rooted in classical Urdu, Arabic and Persian literary traditions, the noha — a profound elegiac lament commemorating the tragedy of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS) — travelled across a fractured Subcontinent in the hearts of millions of families that migrated to Karachi. Over the last three-quarters of a century, this localised ritual of displacement morphed into a defining cultural powerhouse. Driven by global shifts and technological eras, 12 trailblazing master orators of the noha [elegiac lament] arose, not merely as reciters, but as architectural anchors and boundary-breakers who fundamentally re-engineered the soundscape of devotion. This is a tribute to those 12 legendary noha khwaans [noha reciters] who shaped Karachi’s Muharram. Soul-stirring, heartbreaking, and melodically and poetically inventive, the noha occupies a central place in the Subcontinent’s Muharram mourning tradition. The masters of this form of elegiac lament found in Karachi a fertile ground to further increase the popularity of the noha in the post-Partition landscape… THE LEGACY OF CHAJJAN SAHIB: SYNTHESIS AND SPIRITUAL RIGOUR A monumental pillar of Pakistan’s cultural history, Chajjan Sahib (Ustad Sadiq Husain) was the foundational pioneer of organised Urdu noha khwaani [noha recitation] in Karachi. Born in Lucknow in 1905, his journey began at the age of 10, reciting during the historic Gomati River floods. After decades of devotion, he migrated to Karachi in 1950, transplanting his newly founded noha group, the Anjuman-i-Abidia Kazmia. During Karachi’s inaugural Ashura (10th of Muharram) procession, his voice anchored the congregation, leading the mourning from Jahangir Park to the Husainia Iranian imambargah in Kharadar — establishing the enduring blueprint for the city’s spiritual landscape. Even after his death in 1986, the enduring power of his artistic and spiritual legacy is preserved in several of his timeless and legendary compositions. His famous nohas, such as ‘Tumhare sajdon ko’, ‘Hasliyon walay merey ho chukay’, and the deeply evocative ‘Hum se mat poochho’, continue to serve as historic touchstones for devotees and cultural historians alike. Chajjan Sahib’s recitation style was defined by a strict adherence to classical, old-school structures that prioritised immense literary weight, emotional devotion and extreme caution in delivery. Chajjan Sahib’s foundational work created a resilient framework that allowed subsequent generations of legends to bring innovation to the tradition. IZZAT LAKHNAVI: THE SIGNIFIER OF MINIMALISM AND MAJESTY Few figures command the reverence accorded to Agha Muhammad Izzat-uz-Zaman (1932–1981), universally celebrated as Izzat Lakhnavi. Born in Lucknow, India, he migrated to Pakistan in 1958, permanently transferring the pristine traditions of his homeland into the cultural fabric of post-Partition Karachi, where he established the Anjuman-i-Zafar-ul-Iman. He would be clad in a traditional sherwani with a wristwatch on his right hand as he appeared on Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) during the solemn days of Muharram — it defined his performance of Shahid Naqvi’s classic noha, ‘Ab aaye ho baba.’ Delivered with utmost seriousness, this iconic masterpiece remains Lakhnavi’s absolute magnum opus. This noha holds a monumental place in Pakistani media history, and is widely recognised as one of the very first nohas to be broadcast on air. Lakhnavi’s other seminal noha is ‘Karbala aik aftab.’ Through a masterful command of vocal modulation, he utilised the ups-and-downs in pitch and pace to immerse the audience in the agonising pain endured by Imam Hussain’s loyal companions. His heart-wrenching recitation of the noha ‘Bano ne kaha’ captures the profound isolation of Imam Husain’s first wife Bibi Rubab as she calls out into the wilderness for her youngest child. A master of elegiac minimalism, Lakhnavi’s pristine vocal purity and soul-touching voice helped him carve out an enduring legacy as a noha khwaan. SYED AFAQ HUSSAIN RIZVI: THE STYLISTIC PIONEER Whether it was blisteringly hot or bitingly cold on the streets outside Shah-i-Khurasan imambargah on Youm-i-Ashur, all weather-related agonies routinely dissipated the moment the voice of Syed Afaq Hussain Rizvi, the legendary Sahib-i-Bayaz [a master elegy reciter] of the Anjuman-i-Muhammadi Qadeem (an azadaari or mourning group), pierced the air. His recitation of the iconic noha ‘Haye Karbala walon’, written by Najm Afandi, alleviated any physical exhaustion during Karachi’s historic Muharram procession. He started noha khwaani during the early days of Pakistan and his passionate voice ruled the landscape of noha recitation for 50 years. He was the most sought out noha khwaan after Sachey Bhai (see below). His evocative recitations anchored the historic shab-bedari [night of mourning] processions, breathing life into compositions such as ‘Bey-watanon ka jo qafila aaya’, a classical lament that chronicles the heart-rending return of the surviving, displaced captives of Karbala back to their desolated homeland. His rendition of ‘Na lashkaray na sipaahay’, written by Sahir Faizabadi, highlights the agony and the loneliness of Imam Hussain at Karbala. Rizvi shattered traditional stylistic boundaries and pioneered sophisticated vocal modulations and innovative rhythmic frameworks. SACHEY BHAI: ACOUSTIC MAJESTY AND DEVOTION Born in Azamgarh, India, in 1941 into the illustrious literary cradle of marsiya [elegy] poet and reciter Yawar Azmi, Syed Ali Muhammad Rizvi — immortally revered as Sachey Bhai — was destined to become the trendsetter of Karachi’s Muharram landscape. In 1953, at just 12-years-old, he unleashed a voice of soaring pitch, emotional gravitas and profound mastery of rasai adab [elegiac literature]. His journey was deeply intertwined with the raw, acoustic textures of post-Partition Karachi. As documented in Prof Syed Imran Zafar Ali’s book Karachi Ki Azadari, it was the fierce cry of a local street-malang [derwish] chanting “Sahib-i-Zulfikar almaddad” [O’ possessor of the sword of Zulfikar, grant me aid] that sparked Sachey Bhai’s creative genius. He wove those very words into a verse and birthed his signature Anjuman-i-Zulfiqar-i-Haidery, thus carving a sanctuary for communal grief. Through the searing heat of successive Ashura processions until the late 1980s, the sight of Sachey Bhai clad in a simple shalwar qameez became iconic. He commanded the sonic geography of Karachi, moving thousands to tears, both with the defiant ‘Ooncha rahay apna alam’ and ‘Museebat ki gharri’, or the classical, Arabic-infused masterworks ‘Ameer lashkar-i-Husain’ and ‘Taqqadam waladi’ — both penned by his revered mentor, Maulana Imdad Husain. The art of noha khwaani remains inextricably bound to the monumental legacy of Sachey Bhai, who passed away in 2000 and who left behind the following prayer: [I am a narrator of the tragedy of Husain Ibn Ali, pray for me, That this supreme honour never departs from my lineage, until the Day of Resurrection.] JAFFAR HUSAIN: THE SILENCED VOICE THAT REFUSED TO STOP For veterans of the 1980s Ashura processions, the image remains indelible: a man clad in a pristine white kurta pajama, commanding the procession with his soulful recitations, his voice amplified by traditional mosque-style loudspeakers mounted on a simple, hand-driven cart. The man was Ustad Jaffar Husain, affectionately known as Jaffar Dada. Leading the renowned Anjuman-i-Al Abbas, Jaffar Dada was widely recognised in Karachi as the third-largest crowd puller during the solemn Youm-i-Ashur processions, following closely in the footsteps of giants such as Sachey Bhai and Afaq Husain. Jaffar Dada’s legacy is defined by his profound vocal delivery and three defining masterpieces. His recitation of ‘Ja ke keh do ke, darya pe hum aayein hain’ captures the unmatched courage of Imam Husain’s brother Hazrat Abbas with fierce, epic cadence. Conversely, ‘Shaheedon zindabad’, portrays the eternal victory of the martyrs of Karbala over tyranny and institutional oppression. His emotional depth peaks in ‘Ae Sakina, ab na baba aayein gey’, a heartbreaking lament that perfectly captures the profound grief of Imam Hussain’s youngest daughter. His immense popularity and rising influence reportedly made him a target of professional jealousy, leading to a dark chapter, where he was allegedly poisoned. While the poison severely damaged and distorted his voice, it could not break his spiritual resolve. Defying the physical limitations of his damaged vocal cords, Jaffar Dada refused to stop reciting, continuing to read nohas with the same burning passion until his final days. That voice belonged to Syed Nasir Jahan, a towering figure who elevated na’at khwaani [recitation of praise for the Prophet (PBUH)], salaam [tribute] and noha recitation into an institution of national heritage. His impact was so profound that, in his earlier days, his recitations on Radio Ceylon reportedly prompted people to purchase radio sets just to experience his unique style of recitation. Blessed with a deeply soulful baritone, Jahan possessed an innate ability to express intense emotional depth with an unmatched sense of reverence that made him a permanent fixture of broadcasting during Muharram. His legendary rendering of ‘Ghabraye gi Zainab’ depicted the crushing loneliness of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) granddaughter in the ruined wilderness of Karbala. ‘Ae maarka-i-quwat-i-Islam ke jauhar’, a tribute to and the portrayal of the suffering of Imam Husain’s youngest son, Hazrat Ali Asghar, highlights Jahan’s mastery over melodic pace, weaving a rhythmic, melancholic rhythm. Meanwhile, ‘La’chaar Hussaina’ is a classical lament that captures the profound isolation and absolute helplessness of Imam Hussain on the sands of Karbala. Jahan’s soulful voice formed a profound literary alliance with master poets such as Najm Afandi and Syed Aal-i-Raza, ensuring the theological purity and poetic metre of each text that he recited. During the Muharram in 1990, adhering to a decades-long sacred tradition, as the dust settled on the grief-laden evening of Shaam-i-Ghariban [Night of the Bereaved], he recited his customary concluding salaam on PTV, sealing the night with the poignant verses: [If we survive, we shall return to this mourning next year, If we pass away, let this be our final Salaam] Only weeks later, in December 1990, this towering icon of noha khwaani breathed his last, leaving the world of elegiac recitation for his permanent, eternal abode. What was meant to be a traditional recitation became his literal, immortal ‘Salaam-i-Aakhir’ [The Last Salaam], which continues to echo in the hearts of mourners to this day. NAZIM HUSAIN: AN ANCHOR OF THE ELEGIAC TRADITION Nazim Husain stood for over half-a-century as a monumental anchor of the tradition of noha recitation. His mastery is immortalised in his legendary recitation of ‘Shaam ka bazaar’, which portrays Imam Husain’s captive family’s march through Damascus. Husain’s tempo makes the imagery of the exhausting drag of caravan chains seem visceral. His 1982 rendition of Mahshar Lakhnavi’s ‘Haye haye Ali Akbar’ captures the intense agony of Imam Husain’s wife Bibi Umme Laila weeping over the shattered youth of her 18-year-old son, Ali Akbar. His devastating delivery of ‘Aseer ho kay chali hoon salaam ae baba’ captures the heart-breaking farewell of Imam Husain’s daughter Bibi Sakina to her father as the caravan of the surviving holy women and children is forced to leave the burning plains of Karbala. A staunch purist of poetic metre, Nazim Husain ensured that composition never compromised the sanctity of elegiac verse, steadfastly prioritising the weight of the subject and poetry over the rhythm itself. SABIRA KAZMI: CHANTING THROUGH THE BURNING SANDS Sabira Kazmi’s signature style is defined by an intimate, conversational pace that pictures a mother’s private lamentation. Nowhere is this heartbreaking aesthetic more visible than in ‘Meray bachay ki aati hai mehndi.’ While recounting the tragedy of Imam Hasan’s son and Imam Husain’s nephew Hazrat Qasim — who was martyred in Karbala at the age of 13 — Kazmi balances a gentle, rhythmic lullaby tempo with a piercing sorrow, capturing the ultimate agony of a mother celebrating a wedding that transforms into a funeral. Her vocal control shifts seamlessly into deep, communal despair in ‘Pukari laash pe’, capturing the agonising grief of the women of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) family over the unburied, shroud-less body of Imam Husain. This breathless, narrative-driven noha vividly describes the agonies of the holy women who stumbled on to the battlefield of Karbala. ‘Wawela sad wawela’ is a deeply moving and heartbreaking classical lament that wraps the soul in the raw, shattering grief of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) family, capturing their collective, agonising cry (wawela) over the martyrdom of Imam Husain and the profound sorrow borne by the surviving captives left behind. Through these definitive renderings, Kazmi ensured that the historic legacy of female lamentation remained an indispensable pillar of Karachi’s religious fabric. SYED ALI ZIA RIZVI: THE FORTRESS OF TRADITION Syed Ali Zia Rizvi was a defining voice of Karachi’s Rizvia Society’s rich elegiac tradition. His popular noha ‘Kartay hain maatam haram Abbas ka’ stands as a monumental fortress of classical noha khwaani, as do his masterpieces ‘Aati hai gardoon se yeh paiham sada’ and ‘Asghar, haaye Asghar.’ Breaking from the era of a lead reciter supported by two back-up vocalists (bazoo), Rizvi pioneered solo noha khwaani, without any vocal assistance. Amid growing market pressures pushing peers toward commercialised grandeur, he remained celebrated for his signature simplicity. His classics include ‘Pamaal-i-sum-i-aspaan’ and ‘Abid kabhi tauq-i-zanjeer pe na roay.’ He utilised a piercing, mournful tenor that served almost as a foundational textbook for modern lamentation. As the founder of modern noha khwaani, Ali Zia Rizvi pioneered a school of recitation defined by a unique delivery style, deep vocal pathos (soz) and a vivid narrative portrayal of Karbala, all while strictly adhering to a disciplined, medium-sized Urdu poetic metre (behr). SYED NASIR HUSAIN ZAIDI: UNMATCHED RANGE, UNDYING DEVOTION Syed Nasir Husain Zaidi — affectionately referred to as Nasir Bhai — stood as the definitive anchor of the Anjuman Tanzeem-ul-Husaini. Wielding a distinctive tenor that defied standard vocal constraints, Zaidi possessed an extraordinary acoustic range that could effortlessly command massive urban spaces, forever binding his congregations with the iconic noha ‘Abbas ka parcham hai, tanzeem Husaini hai.’ Born in Hyderabad, Sindh, in 1964, Zaidi migrated to Karachi in 1972, launching his sacred journey of recitation in 1976. Documented by Prof Imran Ali as the trusted right hand (bazoo) of the legendary Ali Zia Rizvi, Zaidi formally joined Tanzeem-ul-Husaini in 1981, etching his name into the city’s spiritual fabric. Nowhere was his sonic power more legendary than under the sky at Mehfil-i-Shah-i-Khurasan. When he delivered the heart-wrenching verses of ‘Kisht-i-alaam mein Zainab ko bhala aaram kahaan’, his resonant voice would slice through the stillness. Zaidi’s dard-bhari [grief-laden] voice produced an immortal repertoire of devotion. His seminal works — including the heartbreaking ‘Na alam na chacha’ and the universally wept-over ‘Lo alamdaar, alamdaar chala’, defined an era of communal mourning. After anchoring Karachi’s Muharram heartbeat for 45 years, this master of lament departed for his permanent abode in 2021, leaving behind a profound silence that still echoes through the streets of azadari. An upscaled screengrab from PTV showing Nasir Jahan during his recitation of Syed Aal-i-Raza’s ‘Salaam-i-Aakhir’: blessed with a deeply soulful baritone, Jahan possessed an innate ability to express intense emotional depth | PTV NADEEM RAZA SARWAR: THE VOICE OF A GENERATION The unprecedented global stardom achieved by Nadeem Raza Sarwar of the Anjuman Gulzar-i-Haideri remains unmatched in the history of noha khwaani. It is no exaggeration to state that he has become the most luminous star in today’s noha khwaani firmament. From his very first volume of recordings, Sarwar announced a paradigm shift — moving away from traditional slow, measured chanting toward a faster, deeply evocative and narratively dramatic delivery. In 1986, his masterpiece ‘Ae Shion jab peena pani’, which beautifully incorporated Arabic phrasing alongside Urdu, captured the imagination of the younger generation. By 1987, his popularity had soared to such heights that tracks such as ‘Tamam aalam mein aaj maatam’, ‘Achhi nahin yeh baat’ and, later, ‘Darya hai hamara’ were memorised verbatim by men, women and children alike, irrespective of sect. By integrating Arabic and Persian into his nohas, Sarwar globalised the genre, making it accessible to international audiences. The 1980s and 1990s were the golden age of Karachi’s famous W-11 buses, which would blast Sarwar’s nohas across the city’s streets throughout the mourning season, transcending sectarian lines, as his voice resonated in every neighbourhood. ALI SAFDAR RIZVI: THE VANGUARD OF RESISTANCE The voice of Ali Safdar Rizvi of the Dasta-i-Imamia emerged as a powerful shift, fusing traditional lamentation with a fierce, definitive ideological consciousness. Heavily inspired by the structural compositions and rhythmic cadences of the contemporary Iranian noha, Rizvi engineered a revolutionary school of recitation that captured the imagination of a younger generation of devotees. His signature style stands at the intersection of spiritual grief and socio-political awakening, transforming the historical tragedy of Karbala into an active, timeless resistance against oppression. Rizvi’s vocal delivery is characterised by a high-energy, anthem-like gravitas that completely redefined congregational dynamics in the city’s central processions. His legacy is upheld by his monumental, battle-centric recitations, including the iconic identity anthem ‘Husain, Husain sha’ar-i-ma’, alongside the deeply evocative ‘Aishiqaan-i-Mehdi ko Karbala bulati hai’ and ‘Zainab pareshan ast’, solidifying his role as the vanguard of Pakistan’s contemporary elegiac movement. A WORD ABOUT THE NOHA AND ITS WORDSMITHS The rich literary tradition of noha khwaani has been meticulously shaped by distinct generations of extraordinary poets. Pakistan’s Muharram landscape was thoroughly enriched by a distinguished cadre of exceptional wordsmiths, including Gohar Jarchavi, Anees Paharsari, Syed Aal-i-Raza, Najm Afandi, Mujahid Lakhnavi and Urooj Bijnori. The academic and structural depth of this poetic genre is further elevated by the contemporary brilliance of scholars such as Dr Hilal Naqvi. While classical figures such as Sahir Faizabadi, Maulana Imdad Husain and Yawar Azmi maintained a traditionalist approach to the pulpit, Dr Rehan Azmi carved out a distinct contemporary path, cementing a unique and unparalleled legacy that continues to bridge historical tragedy with modern poetic sensibilities. Based on three immutable pillars — masaaib [the tragedy], fazaail [the virtues] and tableegh [the message] — the noha, through the agency of the noha khwaan, is not merely a passive piece of literature and instead serves as an active producer of place. The walking bodies of the mourners physically trace an alternative map of the city. The route itself becomes a sacred geography, marked by traditional stopping points (gali [lane], choraha [square]) that are recognised year after year, building a permanent layer of religious and historical meaning over the grid of the city. Moreover, seamlessly archived and globally amplified, the contemporary noha has broken free from localised boundaries, transforming into a high-powered, multimedia vehicle for identity affirmation. This ritualistic heraldry serves as the acoustic foundation for an urban transformation, where grief and pain cease to be a private affliction and becomes a structured, collective remapping of the city. Final notice issued to Islamabad DIG in PTI protest case

    • ATC directs officer to explain non-compliance over challan submission • AJK High Court orders ‘provisional’ registration of PTI as political party ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday issued a final notice to the Islamabad DIG (operations) under Section 37 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997, observing that prima facie sufficient material was available to proceed against the police officer for failing to comply with court orders regarding submission of the challan in a protest case against PTI leaders and workers. Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra expressed displeasure over the continued non-submission of the challan despite repeated directives and earlier notices issued by the court. During the hearing, Prosecutor Raja Naveed informed the court that the prosecution had still not received the challan. Questioning the investigating authorities over the delay, the judge observed that the court had repeatedly sought the report but the police department had failed to comply with its directives. He noted that trial proceedings could not commence because the case record remained incomplete and there was uncertainty regarding the accused persons named in the interim challan. At one stage of the proceedings, the court verbally announced a punishment of one month’s imprisonment and a fine of Rs100,000 for the DIG for non-compliance with court orders, directing the stenographer to prepare the order in the courtroom. However, the written order issued later stopped short of imposing punishment and instead issued a final show-cause notice to the DIG. The order noted that Section 37 of the ATA empowers an anti-terrorism court to punish any person who disobeys its orders with rigorous imprisonment of up to six months and a fine. The order stated that a previous notice had already been issued to the DIG, but he neither appeared before the court nor submitted any written explanation for the delay. The court regretted that repeated directions had been issued to the investigating officer to submit the complete challan, but no meaningful progress had been made. During the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor and newly appointed investigating officer Inspector Zafar Iqbal sought a short adjournment to submit a detailed report as well as the challan. Inspector Iqbal informed the court that he had recently been appointed investigating officer and that the investigation team had been reconstituted. The prosecution assured the court that its directives would now be complied with in letter and spirit. The court was also informed that accused Sohail Afridi, Junaid Akbar and Abdul Ghani had been placed in Column No. 2 of the interim challan as their arrest was still required. The court directed the DIG to submit his written reply before the next hearing and adjourned proceedings until July 6. PTI registration Meanwhile, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission to “provisionally register” PTI as a political party. The short order was verbally announced in the open court by senior puisne judge Syed Shahid Bahar. Other members of the bench were Justice Sardar Muhammad Ejaz and Justice Khalid Rasheed Chaudhry. A detailed judgement was likely to be issued on Wednesday. On May 16, the Election Commission had rejected PTI’s application for registration, citing alleged non-fulfilment of Rule 121 of Election Rules concerning financial affairs and details of accounts provided by the applicant party. Terming the move unconstitutional and undemocratic, PTI leaders had announced challenging it at the appropriate forums. According to PTI sources, the commission’s decision was assailed in the high court on June 19 through a writ petition, filed on behalf of the party’s regional president Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi and secretary general Mir Attiqur Rehman. Iran, Oman assert ‘sovereignty’ over Hormuz, mull fees

    • Joint statement mentions study of payment to be charged for services provided in administration of energy route • Dar backs idea of ‘toll-free strait’ for at least 60 days, says Switzerland talks ‘nearly derailed’ because of Israeli actions in Lebanon MUSCAT/ISLAMABAD: Despite widespread opposition to any change in the status of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran and Oman said they would study the fees to be charged for services provided in administering the vital energy route, as they asserted “sovereignty” over the waterway. The announcement came as Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told Al Arabiya in an interview that Pakistan supported a toll-free Hormuz that did not involve permits or any service fees. In a joint statement on Tuesday, Iran and Oman emphasised their “sovereign rights over their territorial waters”, but Muscat’s foreign minister said on X that both sides were committed to “toll-free safe passage”. They “agreed to maintain their dialogue on this issue through a joint working group between the two foreign ministries”, the statement quoted by AFP said. The working group was aimed at reaching “agreement on the future administration of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the services that will be provided in this regard and the costs associated with them in accordance with international standards”, they said. The statement followed meetings in Muscat between top officials from the two nations. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and chief negotiator Bagher Ghalibaf met Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi. Last week, Iran’s foreign ministry said the country would impose what it called maritime service fees for crossing the strait. Mr Ghalibaf said the fees will come into effect after a 60-day period without charges that is stipulated in a memorandum of understanding signed with the United States. The MoU states that Iran and Oman will discuss its “future administration and maritime services” alongside other Gulf countries. Optimism for final agreement In the interview, FM Ishaq Dar spoke about Pakistan’s efforts to broker peace between the US and Iran, the status of negotiations between the two countries, and the Hormuz and nuclear issues being discussed by the two rivals. Speaking about the MoU signed by the two countries, he said the world was already beginning to see the dividends of peace in the form of reduced energy prices and resumption of traffic in Hormuz. He maintained that the Strait of Hormuz should be restored to pre-conflict status, which “means no fee and no toll at all”. He also recalled his March visit to China, where he said both China and Pakistan agreed, as per a five-point plan, that there should be free movement in the strait. “No permits, no toll, no additional charge, whatever you name it; it should be free movement and sea lanes should be freely moving [on] both sides,” Mr Dar said. “This is the global understanding,” he said, observing that for “at least 60 days, there will be free movement” within the waterway. Shifting his attention to the talks in Burgenstock in Switzerland, he called the summit “phase two” of the negotiation process. “There are three technical groups. One is to deal with the nuclear issue, the second is about sanctions and frozen assets and third is Lebanon,” Mr Dar said. “This new document (MoU) has been divided into two phases,” he said, explaining that the first phase had been completed and signed and urged that no one should doubt the “intentions of the signing parties”. “We have no doubt that they are sincere and want to move forward,” FM Dar said. “For certain items, they have 30 days to conclude, but the bulk and overall conclusion of the final deal timeline is 60 days, and this can be mutually extendable,” the FM said. He, however, expressed hope that the final agreement will yield positive results. “We have to be sincere to the cause; Pakistan has no personal vested interests, and we did the entire exercise with complete sincerity…” FM Dar said. When asked about Iran’s uranium stockpile, the minister said that at the time of Islamabad Talks, Iran had expressed flexibility on the issue. “It was at that time a question of US demand that they wanted to take it away. Iran was not willing…but [..] it can be downblended from the claimed 60 per cent,” FM Dar said. Talking about Lebanon, the foreign minister observed that the issue had “erupted time and again” during the course of the peace process and added that the Switzerland talks were nearly “derailed” due to Israel’s attacks in Lebanon.
