South Korea accelerates military self-reliance over Trump’s ‘unpredictability’

US President Donald Trump’s abrupt move to scale back annual military drills with South Korea has handed President Lee Jae Myung a fresh impetus for greater defence self-reliance even as he seeks to maintain the long-standing alliance. Lee on Tuesday called for accelerated efforts to regain wartime operational control (OPCON) of South Korean forces from the United States and build nuclear-powered submarines, casting both as part of a broader push to boost South Korea’s ability to defend...

The Guardian view on global inequality: extreme wealth threatens democracy | Editorial

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani shows Britain’s Andy Burnham that confronting billionaires need not mean the end of cooperation with Donald Trump In November, Californians will vote on a one-off 5% levy on residents worth more than $1bn. The union-backed plan could raise $100bn, more than enough to replace federal healthcare funding stripped away by Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. About 200 very rich people would pay. But the referendum is becoming a test of whether extreme wealth can buy the political power to defeat a popular redistributive policy. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has already spent $100m backing opposition to the tax – a fraction of the $13bn bill he could face. Other billionaires are joining him. Whether voters can impose costs on the super-rich once their fortunes are big enough to shape the political process is now an open question. That alone should trouble any democracy. It’s a long way from Mr Brin’s west coast lair of Mountain View to Andy Burnham’s Makerfield constituency. But the prime minister should heed the call from prominent progressive academics – led by the Nobel prize winner Joseph Stiglitz – urging Britain to join a new global push to tackle inequality. Prof Stiglitz wants help creating a new UN International Panel on Inequality (IPI). This stems from the G20’s first-ever inequality report, which warned that the yawning gap between rich and poor was a human-made crisis corroding democracy and social cohesion while blocking efforts to tackle the climate emergency. US cries foul as Israel bombs Turkey-linked airbase in Syria

On Tuesday, Israel bombed a Syrian airbase that Turkish officials have been helping to renovate, marking the latest escalation in the Israeli government’s effort to beat back Turkey’s influence in Syria. The strikes, which reportedly damaged an airstrip and a storage facility at the Abu al-Duhur Airbase, did not lead to any casualties. Still, they drew a strong rebuke from U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, a long-time friend of President Donald Trump who is also serving as the president’s envoy to Syria. The attacks “constitute an unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability,” Barrack posted on X, adding that the government in Syria has “repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel.” The comments represent unusually sharp criticism of Israel from the Trump administration, which maintains a close relationship with the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Barrack’s rebuke indicates growing U.S. frustrations over Israel’s habit of attacking potential threats pre-emptively rather than seeking diplomatic solutions. Indeed, Syria has turned into a major sticking point in U.S.-Israeli relations since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. Trump has sought to improve relations with Syria since he began his second term last January. He has lifted most sanctions on the country and seemingly developed a positive rapport with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a one-time al-Qaeda fighter who later rejected jihadism and led the campaign that toppled former President Bashar al-Assad. Israel has been far more circumspect about the post-Assad government. Shortly after Sharaa took power, the Israeli military occupied a swathe of land in southern Syria and launched a campaign of airstrikes aimed at destroying the former government’s military equipment, lest it fall into the new government’s hands. Turkey has played an important role in this dispute. Ankara has been a key backer of Sharaa since the late 2010s, when his militant group ruled over a small region surrounding Idlib in northwest Syria. Growing Turkish influence on the new Syrian government has infuriated Israeli leaders, who increasingly see Turkey as a “new Iran” bent on countering Israel’s interests across the Middle East. Israel has so far been careful to avoid angering Trump through its anti-Turkey campaign. Prior to Tuesday’s strikes, the Israeli military had not hit Turkish interests directly, though it came close on several occasions, including when it launched a series of strikes in April 2025 on bases that Turkey had “scoped out” for potential troop deployments, according to Reuters. As Israel-Turkey tensions have continued to rise, Netanyahu has begun pressing Trump to take a more emphatic stance, or at least to accept the necessity of an Israeli military presence in Syria. Just last month, Netanyahu took time during a meeting on Iran to show Trump a map of Syria that claimed Turkey was occupying 5% of Syrian territory, while the Israeli military was only occupying 0.1% of the country. (As the Times of Israel noted, Turkey is doing so with the permission of the Syrian government, while Israel is not.) Netanyahu’s concerns appear to have fallen on deaf ears. According to a recent report from Israel’s Channel 13, Israeli officials asked Trump several weeks ago to approve an attack on a Turkish military site in Syria, and the president refused. It is unclear whether Tuesday’s strikes were related to these discussions. Syria’s government condemned Tuesday’s attack as a “dangerous escalation that threatens security and stability in the region,” calling on the United Nations Security Council to “clearly condemn this aggression and take a firm position against Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty.”

Imran Khan's sister Noreen Niazi allowed to meet him at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail

RAWALPINDI: Incarcerated ex-prime minister Imran Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, was allowed entry into Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail on Tuesday after the Supreme Court (SC) ruled that the PTI founder be allowed weekly meetings with his family. Imran — imprisoned since Aug 5, 2023, for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts — is serving a 14-year sentence at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail in a £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. Despite an order by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) allowing the incarcerated ex-premier to have twice-a-week meetings — on Tuesdays and Thursdays — with his family, lawyers and other associates, Imran has been restricted from meeting visitors for several months. On Tuesday, however, Noreen Niazi was allowed entry into the jail to meet with Imran after all three of his sisters and a cousin were stopped at Dahgal Naka, a security checkpoint and road intersection located on Adiala Road. Only Noreen was sent by police to Adiala jail’s Gate no. 5, while Imran’s other sisters Aleema Khanum and Dr Uzma Khanum were not allowed to proceed beyond the checkpoint. Imran’s wife Bushra Bibi also met with her family today in a conference room in the jail. During the meeting, lasting 40 minutes and including her son Musa Maneka and sister-in-law Mehrunnisa, her health and legal matters were discussed. Speaking to the media at Dahgal Naka, Aleema said that the SC should also grant bail to Imran and Bushra Bibi. She added that the SC’s ruling to send the PTI founder to hospital came after eight months of demands from the party. “Politics does not trump health,” she told the media while confirming that Noreen would be allowed to meet him. “We are his sisters — we talk about his health.” Aleema noted that “justice is being carried out”, adding that if it was not, there would be criticism. “If the founder has got relief, then Bushra Bibi’s charges are weak,” she added, saying that just as the founder has got relief, Bushra should have gotten it earlier. Redistricting scrambles Florida primary as Alaska awaits Dan Sullivan v Dan Sullivan – US politics live

Today’s contests will help shape the fiercely contested midterms this fall to determine control of Congress Sign up for the US Breaking News email The White House launched a personal attack against a CNN reporter on Monday with a social media post that mentioned her children and accused her of asking a “disgusting and inhumane question”. A White House post targeted Kristen Holmes, a senior White House correspondent for the network, after she asked Donald Trump to respond to a widely shared comment by Democratic senator Jon Ossoff in a speech on Sunday. Donald Trump voted by mail in Florida’s Republican primary, Politico reports, citing Palm Beach County voting records. The White House has confirmed the president’s mail-in vote, according to the New York Times, which added that this is at least the third time the president has mailed his ballot. A northern California county plans to hire Tina Peters, the prominent Colorado election denier recently released from prison, to work on elections. Shasta county, a conservative region home to 182,000 people, has emerged as a center of the US election denialism movement in recent years. California governor Gavin Newsom’s office said the state is investigating Peters’ hiring. CNN has said it stands behind reporter Kristen Holmes after Trump repeatedly told the CNN reporter to “be quiet” and accused her of being “a fake reporter” during questioning over conditions onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Shortly after the president reprimanded Holmes, the White House invoked her children in a social media post further attacking the reporter when she asked about comments from Democratic senator Jon Ossoff in a speech on Sunday. He had told a crowd that Trump “doesn’t want to do the job” and instead “wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar”. It was an apparent reference to Natalie Harp, the president’s executive assistant. Trump again threatened to bomb Oman if it “gets in the way” of his effort to end the US-Israel war on Iran, as the two-month window to negotiate peace with Iran expired on Monday with no end to the conflict in sight. “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the shit out of them,” Trump told Fox News. White House attacks CNN reporter for question on Trump aide

The White House on Monday lashed out at a CNN reporter after she asked a question about US President Donald Trump’s relationship with an aide, in the latest in a series of attacks on female journalists. During an event in the Oval Office, reporter Kristen Holmes asked Trump to respond to comments by a Democratic lawmaker about the president’s executive assistant Natalie Harp, 35. “Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question,” the White House’s “Rapid Response” team said in an X post directed at Holmes and linking to a video of Trump’s response. The Republican leader later berated Holmes as “very disrespectful” as she asked a question on North Korea. The event was to honour a teenage lifeguard who saved a child from swells, but the president opened the floor to questions on unrelated issues, as he regularly does. “You’re a loud, boisterous person, you’re fake news, be quiet,” Trump said to Holmes. CNN said the attacks on Holmes were “beneath the office”. “We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” it said in a statement. Natalie Harp has been the subject of recent internet commentary after it emerged she was one of the few aides with Trump during a secret Air Force One swap in July. Jon Ossoff, a Democratic senator and possible 2028 presidential contender, accused Trump in a campaign speech on Sunday of wanting to “build his ballroom and travel with Natalie” instead of doing his job. Trump dismissed Ossoff as a “Pee-wee Herman lookalike” and defended his construction of a $400 million ballroom at the White House, but did not mention his aide. The White House criticised Holmes for asking about Harp during an event with the lifeguard. “@POTUS hosts a hero lifeguard in the Oval Office and she uses it as an opportunity to take a cheap shot about one of President Trump’s staffers,” the Rapid Response account said. “These scumbags are the lowest of the low.” Harp, a former television news personality, is frequently seen at Trump’s side and has been dubbed the “human printer” for supplying the president with print-outs of information. In the book “Regime Change” published this year, two New York Times reporters wrote that Harp’s loyalty extended to writing him “adoring letters” including one that read: “You are all that matters to me.” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung had earlier slammed Ossoff for the Harp comments, calling him “the biggest **** loser in politics”.

Trump, Güney Kore ile ortak askeri tatbikatların kapsamının azaltılmasının ardından yaptığı açıklamada, Kim'in son temas girişimlerine yanıt verdiğini belirterek Kuzey Kore lideriyle ilişkisini övdü. Uzmanlar, Kuzey Kore'nin kara, hava ve deniz operasyonlarının yanı sıra drone kullanımı dahil “modern savaşın her alanında pratik deneyim” elde ettiğini söylüyor. Kim'in yükselen uluslararası konumu geçen yıl Pekin'deki askeri geçit töreninde de dikkat çekti.
