İran'da milyonlar Hamaney'e veda ediyor! Peş peşe intikam yeminleri: 'ABD'ye ölüm, İsrail'e ölüm'
MİLLİYET.COM.TR / ABD ve İsrail'in 28 Şubat'ta düzenlediği saldırıda hayatını kaybeden İran'ın eski dini lideri Ali Hamaney için başkent Tahran'da devlet töreni düzenleniyor. Tahran'daki İmam Humeyni Musalla Camisi'nde gerçekleştirilen törene İran'ın farklı kentlerinden ve yurt dışından gelen binlerce kişi katıldı. Tören alanında İran bayrakları taşınırken, geniş güvenlik önlemleri alındı. Devlet töreni kapsamında İran Cumhurbaşkanı Mesud Pezeşkiyan, Meclis Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Galibaf ve Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi, cenazeye katılmak üzere Tahran'a gelen devlet başkanları, meclis başkanları ve özel temsilcilerle bir araya geldi. ‘AMERİKA'YA ÖLÜM, İSRAİL'E ÖLÜM’ İsrail merkezli Ynet haber sitesinin aktardığına göre, cenaze törenine katılan kalabalık sık sık "Amerika'ya ölüm!" ve "İsrail'e ölüm!" sloganları attı. İsrail basını, binlerce kişinin katıldığı törenin yalnızca bir cenaze programı olmadığını, aynı zamanda İslam Cumhuriyeti'nin düşmanlarına karşı düzenlenen bir güç gösterisi niteliği taşıdığını değerlendirdi. Haberde, İran yönetiminin cenaze törenini özellikle ABD'nin bağımsızlığının 250. yıl dönümüne denk gelen 4 Temmuz'da başlatmasının da dikkat çekici olduğu belirtildi. ‘İNTİKAM ALACAĞIZ’ İran Ordu Komutanı Tümgeneral Emir Hatemi, İran devlet televizyonuna yaptığı açıklamada ABD ve İsrail'i hedef aldı. Ertesi gün kılınan cenaze namazının ardından naaşın, Tahran'a yaklaşık 20 kilometre uzaklıktaki Beheşti Zehra Mezarlığı'na götürülmesi planlanmıştı.
Kalibaf, Washington ve Tel Aviv’in savaşın sona erdirilmesine ilişkin taahhütlerine uymaması halinde İran’ın karşılık vereceğini belirterek, 28 Şubat’taki saldırının hedeflerine ulaşamadığını savundu. Kalibaf, İran’ın müzakereleri sürdürmesine rağmen olası yeni saldırılara hazırlıklı olduğunu söyledi. ABD Başkanı Donald Trump ise, İran tarafıyla görüşmelere ilişkin, “Sanırım ihtiyaç duyduğumuz şeylerin neredeyse hepsini kabul ettiler” dedi. Yılmaz, Pezeşkiyan ile görüştü Cumhurbaşkanı Yardımcısı Cevdet Yılmaz, İran Cumhurbaşkanı Mesud Pezeşkiyan ile başkent Tahran’daki Saadabad Sarayı’nda görüştü. Hamaney için düzenlenen devlet törenine katılmak amacıyla İran’a gelen Yılmaz, “Kardeş İran halkının geride bıraktığımız süreçte yaşadığı acıları yürekten paylaşıyoruz. Türkiye olarak, bölgemizde barış ve istikrarın kalıcı hale gelmesi, diyalog kanallarının güçlendirilmesi ve savaşın ardından normalleşme sürecinin desteklenmesi yönündeki çalışmalara katkı sunmayı sürdüreceğiz” ifadelerini kullandı. Mücteba Hamaney’in durumu belirsiz Törenlere katılımı belirsiz olan İran’ın yeni lideri Mücteba Hamaney’in durumu merak uyandırıyor. Babasının öldürüldüğü saldırıdan bu yana kamuoyu önüne çıkmayan Mücteba, halka yalnızca devlet televizyonlarında okunan yazılı mesajlar üzerinden hitap ediyor. Mücteba Hamaney’in güvenlik gerekçesiyle babasının cenazesine katılamayacağı gündeme geldi. İsrail’in Mücteba Hamaney’i öldürme yönündeki tekrar eden tehditlerine karşılık İran ordusundan ise ‘yanlış hesap’ uyarısı geldi. Açıklamada “Ülkemize yönelik her türlü tehdit veya saldırıya, silahlı kuvvetlerdeki İran evlatlarının vereceği sert ve pişmanlık doğuran karşılıkları dikkate almalılar” ifadeleri kullanıldı. Hürmüz pazarlığı Cenaze törenleri sonrası dikkatlerin, yeniden bölgesel diplomasiye ve ABD ile İran arasındaki askıya alınmış görüşmelerin yeniden başlamasıyla Hürmüz Boğazı konusunda alınacak kararlara çevrilmesi bekleniyor. Wall Street Journal (WSJ) gazetesi, Hürmüz Boğazı üzerindeki kontrol iddialarından ve gemilerden ücret alma planından vazgeçmesi karşılığında İran’a dondurulmuş dış varlıklarının bir kısmını serbest bırakmayı önerdiğini yazdı. Teklifi “yetersiz” bulan Tahran ise boğazın kendi denetiminde olduğunu belirtti. İran Meclis ve Müzakere Heyeti Başkanı Muhammed Kalibaf, Hürmüz Boğazı’nın yönetimi konusunda kararlı olduklarını ve ABD’nin müdahalesine izin vermeyeceklerini söyledi. ‘İsrail suikast planladı’ iddiası ABD yönetiminin, İran ile müzakereler sırasında İsrail’in, İran Dışişleri Bakanı Abbas Arakçi ile İran Meclis ve Müzakere Heyeti Başkanı Muhammed Bakır Kalibaf’a suikast düzenlemeyi planladığına kanaat getirdiği ileri sürüldü. New York Times gazetesinin haberine göre, isimleri açıklanmayan yetkililer, İsrail’in müzakereler devam ederken Arakçi ve Kalibaf’ı suikasta uğratmayı planlamış olabileceğini düşündüklerini ifade etti ve bu endişeyi dolaylı yollarla Tahran’a iletti.Yetkililer, Washington yönetiminin bu iki üst düzey ismin suikastının müzakereleri baltalayacağından endişelendiğini ve planı öğrenmesi üzerine İsrail’den “geri adım atmasını” istediğini iddia etti. Pakistan savaş uçaklarının, İran sınırından İslamabad’a ve geri dönüşte, İran heyetini taşıyan uçaklara eşlik ettiği de ileri sürüldü.
ABD-İran Mutabakatına Rağmen İsrail Güney Lübnan’da 4 Kişiyi ÖldürdüKhamenei lies in state as Iran begins week-long ‘farewell’
• Millions of mourners expected to converge on Tehran • Processions to pass through holy cities before burial in Mashhad on July 9 • President Pezeshkian says large turnout will signal unity and defiance against terrorism TEHRAN: The body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei lay in state in a vast hall in Tehran on Friday as millions of mourners are expected to converge on the city over the coming days to pay their final respects to former supreme leader, assassinated at the age of 86 by US and Israeli bombs. Iran is staging a week of mass funeral processions for Khamenei, whose 37-year rule was brought to an end in February by the first air strike of the war. The proceedings will mark one of the largest public funerals in modern history, its scale and size expected to surpass the 1989 funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, which drew about 10 million mourners. Iran’s current supreme leader and son of Khamenei, Mojtaba Khamenei, will not be attending the funeral. This is due to security reasons following Israel’s latest threat to assassinate him. Photos showed mourners carrying Khamenei’s coffin, emblazoned with Iran’s tricolour flag, into the Grand Mosalla, one of the Islamic republic’s most important ceremonial venues. Others show crowds at a pre-funeral ceremony clad in black, as the coffin was set down against a backdrop of red flowers and white butterflies hanging in the air. Ahmad Vahidi, head of the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological arm of the military, made his first appearance since the start of the war in February, paying his respects at the coffin. He will lie in state for three days at the colossal Grand Mosalla, which has been draped in banners featuring images and quotes of Khamenei. Holy cities The funeral ceremonies for the supreme leader will pass through a series of locations — from the seat of power in Tehran to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf and finally Mashhad — that reflect the religious, political and ideological pillars of the Islamic republic. His funeral, initially delayed at the height of the Middle East war, is taking place as Iran and the US uphold a fragile ceasefire after signing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to halt the conflict. The US and Israel initiated a war against Iran with the initial strikes assassinating the supreme leader and his family members — his daughter, grandchild, son-in-law and daughter-in-law. Other senior Iranian military commanders were also assassinated during the strikes, including Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader. His public funeral will begin on Saturday, with his body lying in state at the colossal complex in central Tehran that hosts major Friday prayers, official ceremonies and religious gatherings. Following the ceremonies in Tehran, Khamenei’s body will be taken to the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala before his burial on July 9 at the shrine of Imam Reza in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, his birthplace. His coffin was unveiled late on Thursday to a throng of sobbing supporters, swaying and beating their heads in time to a sung lament as flowers were thrown from the bier into the crowd. On Friday, the coffin and those of family members killed with him was laid in state in the great prayer hall built to honour his predecessor, Ayatollah Khomeini. After the coffins arrived on Friday, borne high across the upraised hands of a waiting crowd, they were laid in the prayer hall on a white, stepped dais before a high, intricately tiled, arched recess, flanked by national and black mourning flags. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a massive public turnout at the funeral of late supreme leader Khamenei would serve as a “decisive” response to terrorism, violence and bullying, while demonstrating national unity. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a massive public turnout at the funeral of late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would serve as a “decisive” response to terrorism, violence and bullying, while demonstrating national unity, state broadcaster Press TV reported. Pakistan PM to Attend Khamenei Funeral in Iran, Then Visit TurkiyeCDF Munir arrives in Tehran for funeral of assassinated supreme leader Khamenei
Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir has arrived in Tehran to attend the funeral of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, state broadcaster PTV reports. CDF Munir was received by Iranian officials and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who was already present in Tehran. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also departed for Iran to attend the funeral earlier in the day, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. In a post on social media platform X, the PMO said the premier was accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyer Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. “The prime minister will express heartfelt condolences to the Iranian leadership and the bereaved families and reaffirm Pakistan’s complete solidarity with the brotherly Iranian nation in this hour of grief,” it said. The PMO said that after wrapping up his visit to Iran, the premier would proceed onward to Turkiye. Earlier, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani arrived in Tehran with a high-level delegation to attend the funeral prayers and burial, state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported. Iranian officials received the Pakistani delegation upon its arrival in Tehran. China, Afghanistan and Iran’s neighbours in the Caucasus region have said they will also be sending representatives. The funeral ceremonies for the supreme leader will pass through a series of locations — from the seat of power in Tehran to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf and finally Mashhad — that reflect the religious, political and ideological pillars of the Islamic republic. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a massive public turnout at the funeral of late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would serve as a “decisive” response to terrorism, violence and bullying, while demonstrating national unity, state broadcaster Press TV reported. Pakistan PM to Attend Khamenei Funeral in Iran, Then Visit TurkiyeTalks in Qatar after US-Iran deal: What we know
US envoys were meeting with Qatari mediators on Tuesday in Doha to discuss negotiations with Iran, the Gulf state said, after Tehran and Washington agreed to a memorandum of understanding this month to halt the Middle East war. Iran said a team would head to Doha this week but contradicted US President Donald Trump’s claim that direct talks will take place. Qatar also said no high-level meetings or direct talks between the longtime foes were planned in Doha. Here is what we know about the discussions: Who and when Trump posted on Monday that Iran had requested fresh talks in Qatar the following day. “IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!” he wrote. After his social media post, his spokeswoman told Fox News that US envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner “will be flying to Doha for high-level meetings this week”. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari confirmed on Tuesday that Witkoff and Kushner were in Doha, but said “they are not here for their negotiations with the Iranians”. They were there to “meet with mediators, with Qatari officials, and the talks will be around all regional issues… including, of course, negotiations with Iran, but also including Lebanon”, he added. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, meanwhile, said on Monday that a delegation of experts would only travel to Doha “later this week” for discussions on the deal, not for direct US talks. “We have not yet entered the stage of negotiating a final agreement,” he said, noting that “over the coming days, we will not have any negotiation meetings with the US side at any level”. Issues on the table A key issue in the accord that needs to be ironed out is Iran’s chokehold on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with the agreement providing for its reopening. Traffic in the strait dropped over the weekend after a vessel was struck while transiting the waterway on Saturday. A US official said talks were “slated to continue on all areas of the MoU”. Iran has also held recent talks with Oman on what it called the “future management” of vessels transiting the Hormuz strait. Another key issue for Iran is the unlocking of its funds frozen by crippling US sanctions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday that the necessary steps to unfreeze these funds were “underway”, saying $6 billion was to be released back to the country out of $12 billion. Baqaei said Tuesday that talks would be held with the Qatari side “probably tomorrow” on the “provision concerning the release of Iran’s restricted assets”. Fighting calms Since the signing of the US-Iran deal, both sides have traded sporadic fire in the Gulf. Tehran’s enforcement of its claim to the Strait of Hormuz has sparked repeated flare-ups. The latest came early Sunday when US Central Command said it had attacked 10 Iranian military targets over “continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping”. Iran said it retaliated with strikes against US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, both of whom condemned Tehran. Yet those exchanges appear to have calmed in the days leading up to the talks in Qatar. On the Lebanon front, fighting in the war between Israel and Hezbollah has also been relatively quiet in recent days. Tehran has insisted any deal should include an end to the parallel conflict and a withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, part of which they have occupied. A lull in fighting in the country began in the days after the announcement of the Iran-US deal.

PM Shehbaz to visit Iran, Turkiye as part of mediation efforts to end Middle East war: sources
ISLAMABAD: As part of Pakistan’s efforts to help broker an end to the war in the Middle East, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will pay official visits to Iran and Turkiye from July 3 to 6, sources in the PM Office told Dawn on Monday. The US military said it carried out new strikes on early Sunday on multiple targets in Iran, in response to a fresh Iranian attack on a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran responded by launching strikes against US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait before both sides agreed to halt attacks. Sources said that during his visit, the prime minister will meet the leadership of both Iran and Turkiye and call on Tehran and Washington to exercise restraint, particularly following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the peace process. The strikes underscored the fragility of the Pakistan-brokered interim peace deal aimed at ending a war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rattled global energy markets. Yesterday, Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, said that “we should reach a new framework that includes all countries in the region and without the presence or interference of any country from outside the region”. This echoed a proposal put forward by Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this week, who called for a new “regional security structure” among regional countries. Pezeshkian floated the concept during a visit to Pakistan, where he expressed gratitude to PM Shehbaz and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts to bring about an end to the war.

After tit-for-tat attacks, Iran FM warns any challenge to Hormuz routes will 'increase tensions'
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Sunday that any attempt to bypass the Strait of Hormuz routes agreed with the United States would “increase tensions” in the Middle East, as the countries traded attacks and accusations of violating a fragile ceasefire in the region. Araghchi’s warning came after the US military said it carried out new strikes on early Sunday on multiple targets in Iran, in response to a fresh attack on a ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran responded by launching strikes against US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. The exchanges underscored the fragility of a Pakistan-brokered peace process aimed at ending a war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, which disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and rattled global energy markets. “Any attempt to adopt new or separate arrangements compared to what is underway by the Islamic Republic of Iran, will only lead to more complicated situations and delays in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and will increase the tensions, as we witnessed in the past two nights,” Araghchi told a press conference in Baghdad later. During his visit to the Iraqi capital, Araghchi also called for the establishment of a security framework with Gulf countries, with Tehran and Washington accusing each other of violating the fragile truce that was meant to end the Middle East war. Araghchi called on all parties to “adhere to the memorandum of understanding and not to allow this MoU to deviate from its course”. Iran’s top diplomat said that “we should reach a new framework that includes all countries in the region and without the presence or interference of any country from outside the region”. This echoed a proposal put forward by Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this week, who called for a new “regional security structure” among regional countries. He welcomed Iraq’s call to hold a meeting between the Gulf States, Iran and Iraq, which was drawn into the Middle East war from the beginning. Iraq is expected to hold on July 8 funeral processions for Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated during attacks by the US and Israel on the first day of the war. Following the US strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Sunday they were taking measures to control traffic in Strait of Hormuz and that violating vessels would be dealt with more firmly than before. The only authorised passage by Tehran passes through a corridor running along Iran’s coast. Vessels have continued to use a non-Iranian-approved passage in the strategic waterway, tracking platforms showed on Friday. A day earlier, the IRGC said that Oman and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) announced the new corridor without consulting Tehran, and warned vessels against using it. In the Islamabad MoU, Iran had previously agreed “safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge, for 60 days only, from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman, and vice versa” in the strait. H.A. Hellyer, of London think tank the Royal United Services Institute, said, “Iran is likely to continue calibrated, low-level coercive activity in and around the Strait of Hormuz… to create persistent pressure on international shipping without triggering a wider conflict.” He said November’s US midterm elections for Congress give Washington “incentives for a quicker agreement” while, for Iran, “a drawn-out negotiation accompanied by controlled pressure in the strait can work to its advantage”. Iran targets US bases in Gulf Earlier on Sunday, Iran said it carried out a third day of retaliatory strikes after the US carried out multiple attacks on Iranian territory, as both accused the other of violating their fragile ceasefire. US Central Command (Centcom) said the strikes were in response to an Iranian drone attack on the Panama-flagged oil tanker “Kiku”, which was carrying some two million barrels of crude. The US military said its operation targeted “surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities”. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said explosions were heard in Sirik in southern Iran, without providing details. The IRGC said, “America’s blind shots at Sirik will not resolve our dominance over the Strait of Hormuz. But our shots at violators will remind the rest of the vessels of the clear passage route.” The IRGC said in a statement that the US strikes had violated the ceasefire and “will result in the complete halt of all diplomatic processes”, according to state-run Press TV. The IRGC navy command said American bases in the region “will experience hell in the coming days”. The IRGC also said it had carried out retaliatory strikes in Kuwait and Bahrain. In a statement, it said the strikes “destroyed eight important US military facilities at the Ali al-Salem base in Kuwait and at the Fifth Fleet naval base in Port Salman in Bahrain”. “Any enemy aggression, whatever the pretext, even against insignificant targets… will have a crushing response,” the IRGC warned. Air raid sirens rang out twice in Bahrain on Sunday, according to the Gulf nation’s interior ministry. A US official, confirming the attacks on US facilities, told Reuters there were no reported US casualties or major damage to US sites in the Middle East but that the situation was still unfolding. Hours later, alarms sounded for a second time in Bahrain, with the authorities saying an Iranian attack damaged a residential building in Muharraq province, with no casualties reported. Bahrain urged the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent session to hold Iran accountable. The Kuwaiti army said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles with no damage or casualties. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was reached between the US and Iran on June 18 under Pakistan’s mediation, aimed at putting a lasting end to the war. The text signed by the United States and Iran said both countries, and their respective allies, were “not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other”. Washington had carried out similar strikes on Friday, saying they were a response to an earlier Iranian attack on another vessel, the “Ever Lovely”. Iran would ‘no longer exist’ US President Donald Trump early on Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened that Iran would “no longer exist” if the United States is “forced” to resume the war. The threat came after US forces said they struck “multiple” Iranian targets Saturday in another tit-for-tat response to attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. “United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!” Trump wrote. Lebanon threats On Saturday, Israel launched strikes in Lebanon as Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem rejected a deal to end that conflict, which has also threatened to derail the wider US-Iran peace effort. Iran called “these brutal attacks… a blatant violation” of the interim truce deal. Lebanon, from where Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in support of Iran, has been invaded and heavily bombarded by Israel, undermining the US-Iran ceasefire. Israel and Lebanon signed an agreement on Friday, supported by the US, aimed at securing long-term peace between the two countries. Hezbollah’s chief Qassem rejected the deal a day later, calling it “humiliating, shameful and a surrender of sovereignty”. He instead called for the full implementation of Washington’s deal with Tehran, which includes an end to the fighting in Lebanon. Hezbollah has repeatedly called for a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Washington deal does not appear to provide for that. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted Israeli troops will remain in the so-called security zone they occupy in southern Lebanon, with civilians prevented from returning until Hezbollah is disarmed. The Israeli premier called the deal historic on Saturday and “a blow to Iran and Hezbollah”. But Netanyahu’s far-right security minister Itamar Ben Gvir denounced it as “a big mistake” and insisted that only Israeli forces were capable of disarming Hezbollah.
Trump İran'ı Yok Etmekle Tehdit Etti, Karşılıklı Saldırılar Ateşkesi SarstıDreaming of connectivity
GWADAR has long remained Pakistan’s geoeconomic dream. Whenever officialdom thinks of extracting economic advantage from geopolitics, Gwadar is the first image that comes to mind. Yet the port has not realised its promised potential, and the adjoining economic zone still awaits investors. Pakistan’s facilitation of the Tehran-Washington contact generated cautious optimism about a possible geoeconomic opening with Iran. Under the 2008 bilateral agreement on international road transport of passengers and goods, Pakistan has already offered Iran multiple trade routes, including Gwadar-Gabd, Karachi/Port Qasim-Ormara-Pasni-Gabd, Karachi/Port Qasim-Khuzdar-Dalbandin-Taftan, and extended corridors linking Gwadar, Turbat, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Quetta and Taftan. If used, these routes can reduce logistics costs and reconnect Makran with regional trade flows. Soon after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad, the FBR introduced procedures allowing cross-stuffing of Iran-bound cargo at Pakistan’s seaports and off-dock terminals. The move is expected to benefit Gwadar, Makran and Pakistan’s border trade with Iran. It can be assumed that such facilitation featured in bilateral discussions. Iran has used the Strait of Hormuz as geopolitical leverage, but chokepoints also impacted Iran as the US naval blockade was costing Iran $500 million daily, resulting in billions in lost oil revenues in just the first few weeks of the tightening restrictions. The Gulf crisis has reminded all regional states of the need to diversify trade routes. Iran, already facing regional and global constraints, needs alternative corridors; Pakistan is geographically placed to provide them. This opportunity can also benefit Pakistan. Yet, Pakistan is part of emerging alignments in West Asia that may not always sit comfortably with deeper economic cooperation with Iran. Still, in a region covered in strategic haze, Pakistan’s advantage lies in keeping its options open, building corridors and allowing economics to create space when politics is constrained. Pakistan’s growing economic engagement with Iran is driven by strategic considerations. Apart from rapidly changing West Asian geopolitics, Pakistan’s growing economic engagement with Iran is driven by several strategic considerations. Afghanistan remains the first; the need for a more controlled border regime in the context of the Baloch insurgency the second; the long-delayed gas pipeline the third; and the search for alternative routes to Central Asia the fourth. For decades, Afghanistan appeared to be Pakistan’s natural gateway to Central Asia. However, terrorism and deteriorating relations with Kabul have pushed this ambition to the background. Rawalpindi has lost patience with the security situation across the western border, and, if not abandoned, the dream of reaching Central Asia through Afghanistan has at least been placed on the back-burner. Interestingly, Pakistan’s strategic community has repeatedly produced grand ideas capable of energising the power elite. Since the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, and even during the war itself, Pakistan envisioned expanding its economic, energy, defence and political relations with Central Asia. Numerous transnational energy and trade corridors were proposed, yet few materialised. Perhaps Uraan Pakistan is another manifestation of this tendency. The federal government’s National Economic Transformation Plan (2024-29) seeks to place Pakistan on the path to a trillion-dollar economy by 2035 and a higher-income economy by 2047. Within the current power structure, a new strategic vision is echoing. It is titled ‘Three Routes to the World’. The first, the Blue-Gold Corridor, links Gwadar to Central Asia through Chagai, Herat and Tashkent, offering the shortest land route to the region and a potential corridor for minerals and agriculture. The second connects Gwadar to Mashhad through Iran, relying on existing Iranian infrastructure and offering the fastest and least expensive option. The third, the CPEC-China route, stretches from Gwadar to Kashgar via Islamabad, linking the port to China’s western regions and giving Gwadar renewed strategic relevance in an increasingly uncertain region. Such visions look good in PowerPoint presentations, but many may not have the capacity to see the constraints and evolve a plan to implement the idea. The power elite is not ready to acknowledge that the Chinese now have reduced enthusiasm for Gwadar and even for CPEC because of security concerns, bureaucratic red tape-ism, and, most importantly, the lack of plans and vision to assess future prospects for the venture. There is a gap between dreaming and thinking big. The former may involve conceiving grand ideas, but the latter requires plans, institutions and sustained strategies to transform those ideas into reality. Perhaps the roots of this tendency to dream lie deep in the psychology of Pakistan’s power and intellectual elites. They continue to believe that Pakistan was primarily the product of poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal’s imagination, yet they remain hesitant to appreciate the pragmatism of the country’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. From Iqbal, they extract utopianism; from Jinnah, they borrow only fragments of realism. Dreamers possess a certain luxury. When one dream shatters, another can easily replace it. Yet the strategic vision that dominates sections of the power elite often fails to complement the country’s geoeconomic ambitions. Forget India, with whom Pakistan’s political leadership once envisioned expanding trade and economic cooperation. Afghanistan presents a more revealing case. Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, Pakistani strategists became optimistic about connectivity with Central Asia through Afghanistan. Central Asian states also appeared receptive to the idea. However, terrorism intervened. Pakistan’s failure to persuade the Taliban to curb the TTP and other terrorist groups gradually transformed optimism into frustration. Islamabad has not only put aside the idea of reaching Central Asia via Afghanistan, but has also distanced itself from its former partner, the Afghan Taliban. Iran has now emerged as an alternative gateway to Central Asia. Strategists are no longer merely discussing this option; they have begun implementing it, as evidenced by the first cargo shipments to Uzbekistan via Iranian territory. The future of West Asian geopolitics remains uncertain, and Pakistan’s place in the emerging regional order is yet to be determined. One can only hope that, in pursuit of new opportunities, Pakistan does not abandon yet another dream, the one now described as the Blue-Gold Corridor. The writer is a security analyst.

THE illegal and ill-advised US and Israeli war in Iran has apparently led to a major rethink in Arab capitals as they examine the post-ceasefire scenario. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gave the first public hint of a new, embryonic security architecture emerging for West Asia and the Middle East during his recent state visit to Pakistan. Calling for a ‘united front’ of Muslim nations, he elaborated on extending a “hand of friendship” and a new regional security structure. His statement follows a series of diplomatic moves and countermoves after the war in Iran left a security vacuum in the region, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The political and military dynamic in the region is moving at its own pace, separate from the sporadic and fractious negotiations between the US and Iran, taking shape in the form of quiet discussions between regional players. A regional security architecture comprising Pakistan, Iran, Turkiye, the GCC, and Egypt, perhaps later extending to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and others, would be a historic paradigm shift in the geopolitical landscape. The thaw in relations between Iran and the Gulf Arab states comes after decades of mutual hostility, but it is clear that Saudi Arabia has paved the way for the warming ties. Iran repeatedly struck US bases across the region, wholly or partially destroying major facilities, as well as damaging civilian infrastructure, but maintained it was responding to military attacks launched from US bases in the GCC countries. A new regional security architecture may be in the offing. The US has not revealed the extent of the damage to radars, communications hubs, aircraft and other key facilities, but it was soon evident that US forces, that had established a foothold in the region after the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, were now acting as lightning rods drawing Iranian drone and missile fire, instead of being a security shield. And the US supplied Israel with substantial air defence missiles, perhaps leading to resentment from the GCC that they were left partially unprotected. Political concerns are also heightened and have led to the establishment of the R4 (Regional 4) in the early days of the war, comprising Pakistan, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The group has already met four times, indicating urgency and commitment. Pakistan has been the epicentre of the regional push for a ceasefire between Iran and the US and appears to have assumed a quiet role in reshaping the post-war regional order. In addition to extensive diplomatic outreach, there were also two unique visits by military leaders to Pakistan just days before the formal signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. On June 9, Gen Rodolphe Haykal, Commander of Lebanon’s Armed Forces met Field Marshal Asim Munir, followed two days later by Gen Metin Tokel, Commander of Turkiye’s Land Forces. Field Marshal Munir also visited Iran at least twice during the war, meeting the political leadership and the Iranian military high command. But it has been growing anger at Israel’s continuing savagery in Gaza and the West Bank, the invasion of Lebanon, its threats to other countries, and the relentless pushing of its ideological imperative of establishing Greater Israel that has forced the Gulf States, Turkiye and other nations in the Middle East to accept that Israel is actively undermining regional stability. It is clear the US can no longer contain or control Israel. And President Donald Trump’s bizarre attempt to link peace negotiations with Arab countries signing the Abraham Accords likely tipped the balance and forced Arab countries to reassess their position. A new regional security bloc would likely meet fierce resistance from the US, Europe, Israel and India. But it is clear that if any effort is going to be made to finally create a Muslim bloc with teeth, unlike the somewhat hapless Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the time is now. Pakistan already has signed a bilateral defence pact with Saudi Arabia. A critical component of any future regional pact would have to be underpinned by trust. The powerful bond between Iran and Pakistan and Islamabad’s steady ties with the GCC could well help break down decades of hostility towards Tehran which has emerged as a powerful actor despite the savage two wars it has faced within the span of nine months. A collective regional security pact would finally address the rogue state of Israel that has consistently been the root of instability, war and economic crises. Its crimes against humanity in Gaza and the West Bank have been tolerated for too long. At the end of the day, the question of Palestine will always determine the future of the Middle East and West Asia. The writer is a former AFP bureau chief who hosts her own podcast. Pakistan links Iran trade prospects to sanctions relief
• FO expects technical talks to resume on Tuesday • Hopes Hormuz tensions will ease with diplomatic progress • Urges Afghanistan to prevent terrorism emanating from its soil • Says govt pursuing release of crew members from hijacked tanker ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday expressed optimism over ongoing high-level technical talks between Iran and the United States, saying progress in trade and economic cooperation with Iran would be linked to the easing of international sanctions on Tehran. Addressing the weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said the pathway towards sanctions relief for Iran had already been initiated through talks held in Buergenstock, Switzerland. He described the process as a positive development and expressed the hope that the negotiations would produce constructive results as they moved forward. Responding to a question, the spokesman said there had been a temporary pause in technical-level discussions between Iran and the United States and that the talks would resume next Tuesday, in the presence of a Pakistani delegation. He said the continuation of dialogue between the two sides was itself an encouraging sign. “It is a very positive development that both parties are engaged in talks and remain at the negotiating table,” he remarked. Commenting on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the spokesman said tensions were likely to ease as diplomatic efforts progressed. However, he noted that a complete return to normal operations in the strategically important waterway could take some time due to operational requirements. On a question regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz, the spokesperson said Pakistan supported the initiatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council and believed in regional ownership of regional issues. He stressed the importance of respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states in the region. Discussing the recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Pakistan, Mr Andrabi said the two sides held extensive discussions on a range of issues, including expansion of trade, investment and economic cooperation. He noted that progress in bilateral economic projects and trade expansion would move forward alongside the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran. “The overall progress of economic projects and opening up of trade with Iran will take place simultaneously with the lifting of sanctions by the United States,” he said. Responding to a query regarding a proposed financing package of $300 billion for Iran, Mr Andrabi said the matter was expected to be discussed during the ongoing technical-level talks in Switzerland. On Afghanistan, the spokesperson said Pakistan had implemented most of its commitments related to bilateral engagement and that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had personally monitored the process, but certain developments later created difficulties for diplomatic efforts. He reiterated Pakistan’s position that Afghan territory should not be used for terrorist activities against Pakistan. “If diplomacy is to move forward, the starting point should be a clear assurance from Afghanistan that its soil will not be used for terrorism against Pakistan,” he said. Andrabi acknowledged China’s constructive role in facilitating understanding between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said Pakistan would continue to work closely with China to promote regional peace and cooperation. “Our engagement on Afghanistan continues, and the simple solution is for the Afghan side to uphold its commitments under international law,” he added. Replying to a query regarding Pakistan’s representation at the funeral of the late Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei, the spokesperson said no final decision had yet been made regarding who would attend the funeral on behalf of Pakistan. Giving details on the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed by the US and Iran, the spokesperson said Pakistan and Qatar had hosted the first high-level committee meeting in Switzerland on June 21, attended by senior representatives from Pakistan, the US, Iran and Qatar. He said the parties agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days, establish political oversight and technical working groups, create direct communication channels to prevent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, and set up a de-confliction mechanism involving Lebanon. He said a technical-level meeting followed on June 22, with Pakistan and Qatar continuing their mediation efforts. The Foreign Office welcomed international recognition of Pakistan’s role in promoting dialogue, peace and de-escalation, while also appreciating the responsible conduct of Pakistani media in maintaining confidentiality during the mediation process. The spokesperson said Deputy PM Ishaq Dar attended the fourth R-4 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Cairo on June 21 alongside counterparts from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. The group reviewed progress on the Islamabad MoU and discussed regional peace and security issues. Dar also continued extensive diplomatic engagements with foreign ministers from several countries, including Switzerland, Turkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Italy, Canada, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Iran and Uzbekistan. Regarding the hijacking of the oil tanker MT Honour 25 off Somalia, carrying 10 Pakistani crew members among the hostages, the spokesperson said Pakistan was pursuing diplomatic and humanitarian efforts for their safe release through engagement with Somali authorities and international partners. On Palestine, he said Pakistan had joined eight Islamic-Arab countries in condemning escalating violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and attacks on mosques near Ramallah. The spokesperson also announced that Pakistan had facilitated the repatriation of 30 Iranian nationals, including rescued fishermen and crew members detained after maritime incidents, in coordination with Iranian, US and UK authorities. Pakistan, İran Sınırındaki Taftan Gümrük İstasyonunu ResmileştirdiPM Shehbaz, Qatari emir express satisfaction at 'positive progress' of US-Iran talks, agree to sustain momentum
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a phone call with the Qatari emir on Wednesday, during which he said the two leaders expressed satisfaction at the “positive progress” made in the first round of technical talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland and agreed to sustain this momentum. “Had a warm and most cordial telephone conversation with my dear brother, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, emir of the State of Qatar, this afternoon,” PM Shehbaz posted on X. He added that he thanked the Qatari emir for his country’s “steadfast support for the peace efforts that culminated in the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding”, which was signed by the US and Iran on June 18. “We expressed satisfaction at the positive progress made during the first round of technical talks in Bürgenstock and agreed on the importance of sustaining this momentum through continued dialogue and diplomacy,” he wrote. PM Shehbaz also thanked the Qatari emir for his “kind condolences on the tragic loss of a Pakistani national in the recent fire incident in Ras Laffan”, referring to the blast at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex. At least 13 people died and 66 were injured in the incident, which Qatar attributed to a technical malfunction. A dozen of the deceased were Indian nationals. The prime minister appreciated the Qatari leadership for its “generous hospitality towards the vibrant Pakistani community in Qatar”. Affirming that Islamabad values its close brotherly ties with Doha, PM Shehbaz said his country looked forward to welcoming the Qatari emir “later this year”. Key direct talks — dubbed the “Lake Lucerne Summit” — were held between the top leadership of the US and Iran on June 20-21 in Switzerland’s Bürgenstock, kicking off negotiations under the Islamabad MoU. The talks held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir representing Pakistan. Under the 14-point accord, which PM Shehbaz had signed as the mediator, the US and Iran agreed on a framework to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and negotiate on key issues within 60 days of the signing. The Lake Lucerne Summit created a mechanism for further technical talks between Washington and Tehran, which were to continue this week. The summit set up a contact channel to “avoid incidents and miscommunication” in the Strait of Hormuz and agreed on a “de-confliction cell” to prevent fighting in Lebanon from erupting again. Following those talks, the US temporarily suspended sanctions on Iranian oil. The general licence allows the sale of crude oil and petrochemical and petroleum products of Iranian origin through August 21. In his remarks alongside Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, who visited Islamabad on Tuesday, PM Shehbaz had thanked the Qatari emir’s “pivotal role” in the peace efforts. He had also expressed his appreciation for the “steadfast support and encouragement” of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt during the process

Pezeşkiyan’ın uçağına Pakistan hava kuvvetlerine ait jetlerin eşlik ettiği belirtilirken, caddelere, İran Cumhurbaşkanı Pezeşkiyan, Pakistan Cumhurbaşkanı Asıf Ali Zardari ve Başbakan Şehbaz Şerif’in yer aldığı afişler göze çarptı.
Trump: 'Ben Olmasam İsrail Yok Olurdu', Gücüm SınırsızPezeshkian’s visit
MUCH importance is attached to symbolism in international diplomacy, and the fact that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s first foreign visit after the cessation of the war with the US-Israel combine was to Pakistan speaks volumes. The Iranian leader received a warm welcome in Islamabad on Tuesday, with the top civilian and military leadership rolling out the red carpet for the distinguished guest and his delegation. Relations between both states were always cordial — with some hiccups — yet there seems to be a newfound respect for Pakistan within Iran after this country played a key role in helping wind down the aggression against its western neighbour. Trust between both capitals has grown — after all the Iranians chose Islamabad to negotiate with the Americans in April over other venues. Now, it is time to transform this bonhomie into deeper bilateral engagement. There has always been a desire on both sides to improve relations. Not only do the two states share a long border, they also enjoy cultural, religious and historical ties. But geopolitics has come in the way of better ties. Specifically, Pakistan has been wary about formally trading with Iran — though informal trade thrives — lest it attract American sanctions. But now, with the US beginning to peel back the layers of sanctions it has applied to the Islamic Republic over the last four decades, a window has opened for Pakistan and other states to trade openly with Iran. After all, the MoU that is currently being discussed between Washington and Tehran specifically mentions that “secondary sanctions” will also be terminated. This is important for third parties such as Pakistan, which can be penalised by being denied access to the American market through secondary sanctions for trading with Iran. The Foreign Office statement with regard to the Iranian president’s visit had said that the “full spectrum of bilateral relations” was on the agenda, including trade, energy, border security and regional connectivity. Perhaps a good place to start would be the resumption of work on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline. The Iranian component of the project is complete, but Tehran has initiated arbitration against Pakistan in France for not fulfilling its end of the bargain. This irritant obstructing better ties can be resolved if both states work out a mutually beneficial plan to restart the pipeline. Formal trade channels should also be strengthened, particularly in the border regions, which can benefit communities on both sides. Border security issues — which are another major irritant — can also be resolved through joint efforts. Iran and Pakistan can be natural trade partners, and increased commerce between both states, along with bilateral cooperation in other fields, can further help cement the relationship. Both sides must take advantage of this emergent opportunity to improve ties. Published in Dawn, June 24th, 2026

Iranian President Meets Pakistan's Top Leaders, Discusses Peace Initiatives
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday met with Pakistan's top civilian and military leadership and discussed regional developments and peace initiatives involving the US.
'Hands of friendship': Iran president calls for new regional security structure among Muslim nations
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday called for a “united front” of Muslim nations, extending “hands of friendship” for a new regional security structure. The Iranian president made the remarks during a one-day official visit to Pakistan, undertaken at PM Shehbaz’s invitation. The two leaders held a meeting at the Prime Minister House, which was followed by delegation-level talks. Addressing a joint press conference later with the prime minister, Pezeshkian said he held “constructive meetings and discussions” with PM Shehbaz, President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. “In these discussions, we had many good points talks and discussed regarding the latest developments in the region and in the world and also regarding bilateral relations,” he elaborated. Pezeshkian observed that the two neighbours were “adamant to use the positive existing atmosphere to usher in a new era and open a new chapter in the bilateral relations between the two countries and draw new horizons and new opportunities of cooperation based on shared interests”. He said Iran believed that “peace, stability, sustainable security, development and the welfare of nations in the strategic region of West Asia and the Persian Gulf can only be ensured through straightforward and honest discussions, intra-regional cooperation, interactions and cooperation based on mutual respect for the countries in the region”. “Based on this fact, we stretch our hands of friendship to establish a common understanding and build a new security structure for the countries in the region,” Pezeshkian added. He noted that PM Shehbaz’s mention of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Egypt in his remarks alongside him was a “very well-placed mentioning of the roles that these authorities and these leaders actually played in the discussions that led to the peace”. “I believe Muslims shall form a united front against their enemies,” the Iranian president said. He went on to say that the “tremendous potentials” of Islamabad and Tehran, along with the political will of the leaders and support of their nations, can “elevate the relations between Iran and Pakistan to a level that is befitting the two countries’ position in the Islamic world and can produce a successful model of cooperation in solidarity and brotherhood”. Pezeshkian declared that the two countries “share a strong resolve to promote and enhance interactions and relations, especially in the area of economy and trade”. He observed that both countries’ ministers, within the framework of the MoUs and the agreements that have been made during last year’s visit, have “tried to remove any technical existing hurdles and operationalise the decisions that have been made”. President Pezeshkian began his address by reciting verses by renowned poet Allama Iqbal, which he said continued to inspire unity among Muslim nations. He said the two nations “do not merely live next to each other, but they share a common destiny in the majority of their aspirations, concerns and hopes”. “Pakistan for us is not merely a neighbouring country; it’s a brotherly and friendly country and has been an amicable companion and has had deep historical, cultural, religious and popular bonds between the two nations and these bonds have brought our nations closer,” he highlighted. Noting that the relations between Islamabad and Tehran have always been consolidated on the basis of mutual respect, goodwill and historical trust, Pezeshkian said the “recent developments have once again showcased the consolidation of this valuable asset”. The president stated: “In a critical historical juncture that the region is facing a multitude of challenges, the responsible and visionary role played by Pakistan in supporting the discussions and negotiations in de-escalating and strengthening the regional stability is a manifestation of a brotherly and futuristic attitude and viewpoint by this country towards the developments in the region.” He observed that Iran’s acceptance of Pakistan’s initiative was a “reflection of the ancient and age-old trust that the Iranian nation has towards the nation, the government and the authorities of Pakistan”. The visiting dignitary concluded his speech by thanking the Pakistani side for its hospitality and for accepting the invitation to the commemoration of the late Khamenei. ‘Iran’s success is our success. Iran’s loss is our loss’ In his remarks at the joint press briefing, PM Shehbaz said he and President Pezeshkian held “very productive discussions in a very cordial atmosphere”. “It was like a family reunion, and brothers were talking to each other with the fullest clarity and total commitment that we will do everything to strengthen our brotherly relations like never before,” he remarked. He noted that Islamabad and Tehran have “consistently stood by one another in difficult times, and recent events have once again demonstrated beyond any ray of doubt the enduring strength of this brotherhood, this friendship and this partnership”. The premier began his speech by reciting an Iranian couplet on the themes of friendship during challenging times. PM Shehbaz described Pezeshkian as a “visionary and sagacious leader of a great country, Iran”. “But you’re a man of many talents and qualities — you are calm, you are wise and you are patient,” he added. Recalling the Iranian president’s past treatment of patients in hospitals, PM Shehbaz congratulated him on “this very well-deserved conferment”. He termed today a “historic moment between Pakistan and Iran”. Recalling the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed last week between the United States and Iran, the premier said it was “a matter of great happiness that this war has come to an end, which could have engulfed the entire region and beyond”. The prime minister hailed the “sagacious” leadership of Pezeshkian and his colleagues, and highlighted Pakistan’s role as an “honest and sincere mediator” in the US-Iran peace process. At the outset of his address, PM Shehbaz referred to the US-Iran technical talks held in Switzerland and said, “My dear brother, we pray to Allah Almighty that God-willing, this arrangement will usher in a new era of peace, stability and prosperity for this entire region.” The prime minister also appreciated the “wisdom and sagacity” of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei for guiding the Iranian nation through “these very difficult and challenging times”. “Throughout this crisis, the entire Iranian nation, our Iranian brothers and sisters, have demonstrated their unity with honour and dignity,” he observed, praising their courage as “awe-inspiring”. He went on to extend Pakistan’s deepest condolences on the “loss of thousands of precious lives, including the late Khamenei, who was a great visionary leader and respected by all and sundry around the Muslim world”. The premier affirmed that the people of Pakistan share the grief of Iranians and stand in “complete solidarity with the people of Iran”. “Your happiness is our happiness. Your sorrow is our sorrow,” PM Shehbaz remarked. “Iran’s success is our success. Iran’s loss is our loss,” he added, inserting another Persian phrase in his speech. “This sentiment reflects deeply the feeling of the people of Pakistan.” He highlighted that the two were “far more than just neighbours” and bound together by shared history, faith and culture. The premier extended his country’s gratitude to the Iranian leadership for reposing their “abiding trust in Pakistan to initiate and mediate this peace process”. “We have done this act of mediation with fullest honesty of purpose and complete sincerity,” he declared. He commended both the Iranian and US delegations for their “serious and constructive participation” in the Lake Lucerne Summit held in Switzerland. Mentioning the “support and encouragement of many brotherly and friendly countries”, PM Shehbaz thanked the Qatari emir’s “pivotal role” and the “steadfast support and encouragement” of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. The prime minister hailed the “untiring efforts [and] unwavering commitment” of CDF Munir. “Even during the dark days, he never wavered and, as a result, was instrumental in helping build the consensus that made this historic breakthrough possible by the grace of god,” he emphasised. The premier went on to praise the “dedicated efforts” of Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his team at the Foreign Office (FO), as well as the “valuable contributions” of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. PM Shehbaz also announced he would be undertaking a visit to Tehran next week to pay respects to late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and to “reaffirm and reassure Pakistan’s solidarity with our brotherly people of Iran”. “Zindabad dosti Pakistan o Iran,” he concluded. ‘We will never let you down’ Addressing a delegation-level meeting between the two sides earlier, PM Shehbaz said it was a “great pleasure once again” to welcome Pezeshkian to Pakistan, as it was his second visit to Islamabad in his capacity as the president of Iran. He said Pezeshkian’s acceptance of his invitation after the Islamabad MoU was a “matter of great happiness and satisfaction for all of us”. The premier requested Pezeshkian to convey his warm regards to Iran’s supreme leader for his “sagacious leadership that Iran has been able to achieve this MoU and as a result, a ceasefire with dignity and honour”. He also offered his deepest condolences “on the killings of innocent Iranian brothers and sisters, children, which run into thousands of people”. PM Shehbaz said: “Yet, under your sagacious and very calm, visionary leadership, today, thanks to God, we are sitting here to peep into a very bright future, and I am very grateful to you and the Iranian leadership for having abiding trust in Pakistan’s ability to mediate with honesty and sincerity. “I want to assure you that as brothers, we will never let you down,” he affirmed. “As they say, true brotherhood doesn’t have any questions to answer. And here we are,” the prime minister said. He further assured the Iranian leader that Pakistan will “carry on this important role until we have everlasting peace in place, on terms and conditions which are dictated by dignity and honour”. He also hailed the courage of Iranians. Highlighting CDF Munir’s “outstanding contribution”, he remarked: “He has toiled and worked untiringly through the nights, through those dark days with one mission: come what may, we will do everything humanly possible to stop this war, which can burn vast swathes of land and devastate everything.” The premier also appreciated the efforts of Dar and Naqvi for their “fine shuttle diplomacy”. “In that, brother Abbas Araghchi has played a pivotal role,” he added. Earlier, the Iranian president was welcomed at the Prime Minister’s House with a guard of honour, and the two held a meeting before delegation-level talks. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was at the direct talks held between the United States and Iran in Switzerland over the weekend, also accompanied Pezeshkian during the visit. At PM House, the Iranian president engaged in a bilateral meeting with PM Shehbaz, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). CDF Munir and Deputy PM were also present on the occasion. This was followed by delegation-level talks between the two sides, which PM Shehbaz addressed. Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq were also expected to call on the Iranian president, according to the Foreign Office (FO). Iran’s state media IRNA reported that FM Araghchi held talks with President Zardari and PM Shehbaz “only hours” before Pezeshkian landed in Pakistan. ‘Principled support for Iran’s peace’ Prior to Pezeshkian’s arrival at the PM House, he met with President Asif Ali Zardari, who reaffirmed Pakistan’s “principled support for Iran’s peace. In their meeting at Aiwan-i-Sadr, President Zardari welcomed his Iranian counterpart on his first state visit to Pakistan since the US-Iran war, the presidency said. “The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, mainly regional peace and security, bilateral and regional connectivity, economic cooperation and other issues of mutual interest,” the statement said. President Zardari noted that the visit reflected the “longstanding brotherly relations between the two countries and a desire to stay together in good and bad times”. He stressed that Pakistan has “consistently opposed one-sided initiatives and has supported dialogue and diplomacy as the means to achieve a durable and sustainable solution to regional and global challenges”. He also underscored Pakistan’s “commitment to preserving the unity of the Muslim Ummah while maintaining strong fraternal relations with the countries of the Gulf region”, the presidency said. President Zardari congratulated Pezeshkian on the signing of the Islamabad MoU between the US and Iran and “expressed the hope that the ongoing technical-level negotiations would culminate in permanent peace in the region”. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s “principled support for Iran’s peace, stability, national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity”. The president again expressed his condolences on the “martyrdom of His Eminence Ali Hosseini Khamenei”, who was assassinated in US-Israeli strikes on Iran, and said that Pakistan would participate in his funeral. Meanwhile, President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its “positive and constructive efforts in support of peace and dialogue and appreciated the support extended by Pakistan during [the] recent challenging circumstances”, the presidency said. The Iranian president said his country “attaches great importance to its relations with Pakistan and looks forward to further expanding cooperation in political, economic, security and regional matters” President Zardari requested President Pezeshkian to convey his warm regards to Iran’s supreme leader. CDF Munir, along with PM Shehbaz, had participated in the US-Iran talks in Switzerland. Both leaders have been involved in efforts to secure peace in the Middle East after the US-Iran war erupted on February 28 as US-Israeli strikes hit Tehran. During his meeting with the army chief, Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s “constructive and responsible role in promoting dialogue, de-escalation, and regional stability”, ISPR said. It added that he acknowledged Pakistan’s “consistent efforts to encourage peaceful resolution of disputes and foster understanding among regional stakeholders at a time of heightened geopolitical challenges”. On his part, CDF Munir reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the region, the statement noted. “Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations and maintaining close consultations on issues of mutual interest, with the shared objective of advancing peace, prosperity and stability across the region,” it read. Iran president, FM arrive Pezeshkian and Araghchi arrived in Pakistan on separate flights earlier in the day. President Pezeshkian, upon his arrival at the Nur Khan airbase, was received by President Zardari, PM Shehbaz, Deputy PM Dar, Naqvi, Bilawal and Ambassador Moghaddam. FM Araghchi, who had already landed in Pakistan, was also present to welcome his president. Pezeshkian was accorded a 21-gun salute, while fighter jets conducted a flypast in his honour, state-run APP reported. The president waved in response to the children’s welcoming slogans, it added. Upon his arrival at Rawalpindi’s Nur Khan airbase earlier in the day, Araghchi was welcomed by Dar, Naqvi and Bilawal. “The leadership and people of Pakistan extend a warm welcome to Foreign Minister Araghchi and the Iranian delegation to Islamabad,” the FO said. In an earlier statement, the FO noted Pezeshkian’s visit was his second to Pakistan in his capacity as the president of Iran. It said the visit would provide an opportunity for the two sides to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges and regional connectivity. It also termed the visit an “important opportunity to discuss ongoing diplomatic engagements following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest”. “The forthcoming visit reflects the shared commitment of Pakistan and Iran to further deepen their historic and cultural ties and underscores their common aspiration for peace, stability, and sustainable progress in the region,” the FO added. IHC, FCC cancel judicial work; govt tells Red Zone employees to work from home The Islamabad High Court (IHC) also cancelled judicial work for Tuesday, due to the closure of the Red Zone for the Iranian president’s visit. A notification issued by the IHC said that Tuesday’s cause list had been cancelled, adding that officials were directed to work from home. However, it added that district courts would function as per routine. Similarly, the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) also announced the suspension of judicial work at its principal seat in Islamabad due to the closure of the Red Zone in Islamabad. “Consequently, the cause list of the Court stands cancelled. However, all officers and staff shall work from home and shall not leave the station. Besides, all four branch registries of the court shall remain open for judicial and administrative work,” the notification said. Separately, the federal government issued a notification implementing a one-day “work from home” directive for various ministries. According to a notification issued by Cabinet Division Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal, employees of ministries, divisions, and government offices located inside Islamabad’s Red Zone will work remotely. Furthermore, autonomous bodies and attached departments operating within the Red Zone will observe a full holiday. However, essential federal institutions and banks were exempted from this order. These included the Prime Minister’s Office, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Cabinet Division, the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, the Federal Board of Revenue, and the ministries of foreign affairs, interior, commerce, industries, law, parliamentary affairs, and planning division, alongside all federal banking institutions. Bus stands closed All bus terminals operating in the capital were closed on Monday night as a security measure in view of the arrival of the Iranian president. Officials of the capital administration and police said that the capital police, under directives from the capital administration, approached the managements of bus terminals in the capital, including those at Faizabad and Chongi No 26, and asked them to shut down their operations before midnight. The managers were further asked to suspend their operations on Tuesday. The terminals will remain closed until the departure of the Iranian president. Besides, the Islamabad Red Zone has also been sealed as a security measure. Entry will be allowed only to concerned officials. Further, Islamabad District Magistrate Irfan Nawaz Memon ordered the immediate closure of all popular hiking routes in the city. The restriction applies to Trail 2, Trail 3, Trail 4, Trail 5, and the hiking tracks located behind Saidpur Village, remaining effective from Tuesday until further notice. US-Iran talks in Switzerland Pezeshkian’s visit follows key direct talks — dubbed the “Lake Lucerne Summit” — held between the United States and Iran in Switzerland, kicking off negotiations under the Islamabad MoU signed on June 18. Under the 14-point accord, Washington and Tehran agreed on a framework to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and negotiate on key issues within 60 days of the signing. The US-Iran talks in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir representing Pakistan. The Lake Lucerne Summit created a mechanism for further technical talks, which will continue this week, and also set up communication lines to end the fighting in Lebanon and to keep the vital Strait of Hormuz open. “Encouraging progress has been made,” the mediators said in their joint statement, including a contact channel set up to “avoid incidents and miscommunication” in the Strait of Hormuz. A “de-confliction cell” between the parties and the Lebanese authorities has also been agreed upon to prevent fighting from erupting again. Additional input from APP

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently addressing a joint press briefing with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is on an official visit to Pakistan. The premier began his speech by reciting an Iranian couplet on the themes of friendship during difficult times. PM Shehbaz said he and President Pezeshkian held “very productive discussions in a very cordial atmosphere”. “It was like a family reunion, and brothers were talking to each other with the fullest clarity and total commitment that we will do everything to strengthen our brotherly relations like never before,” he remarked. Referring to the US-Iran technical talks held in Switzerland, he said, “My dear brother, we pray to Allah Almighty that God-willing, this arrangement will usher in a new era of peace, stability and prosperity for this entire region.” The prime minister also appreciated the “wisdom and sagacity” of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei for guiding the Iranian nation through “these very difficult and challenging times”. “Throughout this crisis, the entire Iranian nation, our Iranian brothers and sisters, have demonstrated their unity with honour and dignity,” he observed, praising their courage as “awe-inspiring”. He went on to extend Pakistan’s deepest condolences on the “loss of thousands of precious lives, including the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was a great visionary leader and respected by all and sundry around the Muslim world”. The prime minister also hailed the “untiring efforts [and] unwavering commitment” of Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. ‘We will never let you down’ Addressing a delegation-level meeting earlier, PM Shehbaz said it was a “great pleasure once again to welcome you to Pakistan”. Highlighted the role and “outstanding contribution” of CDF Munir, he remarked: “He has toiled and worked untiringly through the nights, through those dark days with one mission: come what may, we will do everything humanly possible to stop this war, which can burn vast swathes of land and devastate everything.” The premier also appreciated the efforts of Dar and Naqvi for their “fine shuttle diplomacy”. “In that, brother Abbas Araghchi has played a pivotal role,” he said.

Erdoğan, Pezeshkian discuss US-Iran deal, ties
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on June 22 spoke over the phone with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, to review bilateral ties alongside regional and global matters.
The regional geo-strategic landscape in West Asia post the Iran war
Following months of all-out conflict that began on February 28, 2026, the United States and Iran have transitioned to a de-escalation phase. On June 17, Presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding to end the war, establishing a 60-day ceasefire extension to negotiate the final terms of a deal. Pakistan served as a key mediator throughout the process. Following the signing and despite a rocky start, the first round of high-level talks concluded in Bürgenstock, Switzerland on Monday, June 22, with the two sides agreeing on a roadmap towards a final deal within 60 days, along with communication lines to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and a deconfliction cell to end fighting in Lebanon. Mediators Pakistan and Qatar described the outcome as reflecting encouraging progress, with technical talks set to continue through the rest of the week at Bürgenstock. Most observers and experts describe the overall process as a considerable (if still fragile) breakthrough in one of the most complicated conflict-resolution efforts of the 21st century. However, the emergence of new logic gates of power redistribution, developing within both the shorter (regional) curve and the greater (global) curve, and entangled geopolitically, geo-strategically, and geo-economically across multiple dimensions, risks going unnoticed and undissected. This omission stems from the rupture between the conceptual and strategic power of the parties directly and indirectly involved in the conflict. High stakes War in the Middle East, as a recurring experiment in the geopolitical laboratory, is aimed at providing a new code for the exercise of power at the regional and global levels. No power centre has the capability to act unilaterally to gain a dominant position, nor can any axis of forces undermine the superposition of a single power (that is, the coexistence of several potential power configurations at once). This balance lends the system a degree of power fluidity and a reasonable rate of uncertainty descent before it settles into a new quantum geopolitical state, a newly fixed distribution of power. Under this code of geopolitical behaviour, any party can find itself in a state of wave-particle duality: at once a defined actor and an unresolved set of possibilities. This means that, as a complex system born at the peak of inter-civilisational collision, this regional conflict cannot be resolved in a linear way, as a parade of endless wars and confrontation on a global scale. The war carries a high risk of returning, and ringing the bells ever harder, until an equilibrium of conceptual and strategic power is reached and wave-particle duality is accepted as the new lens of geostrategic and geopolitical analysis. The post-Iran-war reality depicts an empowered Iran, a deeply dissatisfied Israel, and a United States caught in the twilight of the never-to-be-won war against Iran. That last point highlights a hidden layer of US concern: if the demonstrative attack on Iran has become a victory narrative for the Western world and domestic audiences, yet a failure in the eyes of allies and partners in the Middle East and South Asia, then what guarantees that the so-called bullet-proof peace deal will serve its purpose and preserve global leadership across the strategic interests it targets in West Asia? The geo-strategic landscape of West Asia in the aftermath of the Iran war takes in the whole set of multidirectional states of the South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan), as well as Turkey, that make up a highly strategic intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. These states are hard to play as a united orchestra, yet eager to move towards non-traditional strategic alignment under British and US participation and conducting. The same holds for the Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates [UAE]), which have learned the limits of US power to protect them during the war with Iran. All of these states, strongly disillusioned by the war in the Middle East, are to be re-classified and re-calibrated as the new geopolitical order emerges. The opposing axes At the very core of this constellation lie two opposing axes of geopolitical tension. The first is Israel, left alone with its anger and the prospect of retaliation across the whole Middle East, in a new round of strikes on its enemies that the Israeli warmongers anticipate after the legislative elections of October 2026. The second is Iran, which has managed to sustain and win the most important resource of this multi-layered conflict (time) and, with it, the ace of increasing geopolitical magnitude. As a result of the war, each warring state is freed from the third party’s (US) dominance and is ready to unleash its arsenal of hybrid forces, allowing it to start building the new geo-strategic components of a future war. Two rival frameworks take shape. The first is Israel’s axis of six states, or hexagon of alliances — a strategic framework designed to position Israel at the centre of a defence, economic, and geopolitical coalition countering both the Iranian-led Shia axis and an emerging Sunni axis. The second is Iran’s renewed axis of resistance (Lebanese Hezbollah, the Houthis, Palestinian factions, proxy forces in Syria), together with a stronger alignment with Pakistan, China, and Russia that represents a formidable Eurasian strategic bloc. The Israel-India nexus It is important to mention here that India is a crucial anchor partner for Israel, balancing economic, security, and technological ties within the hexagon of alliances. This may give India the false perception that it can regain enhanced strength to plot a new conflict with Pakistan, a country whose strikingly successful geopolitical and diplomatic leverage as a key mediator in the US-Iran peace process has, by contrast, left India with a sense of devastating failure and abandonment. Nevertheless, there is strong indication that two frustrated countries, Israel and India, will strive to set up new provocations and to encircle new partners within an emerging hexagon of alliances (including Cyprus, which can flip into a useful trigger for a dramatic transformation of the geo-strategic scene and drag the South Caucasus into war). The aim is to contain their key rivals, Pakistan and Iran, who are set to gain more power and influence both in the Middle East and across West Asia and the Global South in general. Pakistan, as a torch-bearer of peace, can play a significant role in nurturing a new strategic mindset, one capable of providing a sustainable deterrent diplomacy in the Middle East. By building a diversity of strategic alignments that secure the bonds and connectivity between South Asia, West Asia, and Central Asia, it can turn into a reliable geopolitical hub, one able to close the gaping gap between the conceptual and strategic power of the warring parties in the emerging multipolar order. By carrying out a tremendous diplomatic breakthrough and giving way to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, Pakistan has become the first and only country in the world, in the post-Iran-war era, able to distribute that power fluidity and reasonable rate of uncertainty descent before fostering a new quantum geopolitical state of things at the regional and global level. Through its decisive alignment with this new code of geopolitical behaviour, Pakistan can foster the strategic concept of wave-particle duality and demonstrate a leading position in designing a more peaceful posture for the emerging multipolar world.
