Construction boss falls from warehouse roof and dies in Umbria

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 18 - A 60-year-old construction boss fell from a warehouse roof and died in Umbria Tuesday in the latest in a long spate of fatal workplace accidents in Italy. The contractor died after falling about 10 metres from the roof of a warehouse in the Deruta area. He was immediately rescued but died practically on the spot. It appears the man had climbed onto the roof for maintenance work. However, he was cautious due to the collapse of a plexiglass panel. Local health authorities are investigating the accident. Carabinieri officers are also on site. As a sign of mourning, the Municipality of Deruta has canceled a concert scheduled for this evening. Friday saw two more workplace deaths in Italy as the long spate of fatal accidents at work which has spurred government action continued. In the first, a 31-year-old mechanic died in a workshop in Cinquefrondi, in the province of Reggio Calabria, near the entrance to the highway connecting the Gioia Tauro plain with the Locride area. According to initial reports, the young man was working under a car that had been raised and supported with jacks when, for reasons currently under investigation, the jacks failed, causing the vehicle to fall. The man was crushed to death. The second accident took place at Diano d'Alba, in the Cuneo area. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, died when a tractor overturned. The young woman was working on a local farm. On Thursday a worker at the San Vito Lo Capo sewage treatment plant in Sicily died from fumes coming from the plant. 118 paramedics responded, and during the rescue effort, a rescue worker who was performing CPR also died. Workplace deaths are in fact a major problem in Italy and Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said boosting health and safety is a major priority. In November the cabinet launched a digital badge for contractors and sub-contractors on construction sites, aimed at improving safety. Trade unions say an average of three workers a day die in workplace accidents in Italy. (ANSA). Read article...

We'll lift Schengen ban only when Ceuta risks completely disappear says Piantedosi

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 13 - Italy will live its Schengen ban on Spain only when the risks of mass migrant influx into the Spanish Moroccan exclave of Ceuta have completely disappeared, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Thursday. The Ceuta case, in which an estimated 80,000 of migrants mostly swam to the exclave late last month with a further influx feared on August 15 despite the vast majority of them having been sent back, is not "political speculation against Spain," said Piantedosi. "This is not the logic that drives this government, whose sole objective is the protection of national security. This is why we are carefully monitoring the evolution of the situation and, as already announced by the government, the decision to suspend the application of the Schengen Agreement will not be reviewed before August 15th, and in any case only after any security risks for Italy have been completely eliminated." Piantedosi was testifying before the Italian parliament's Schengen Commission. Spain has introduced random checks on arrivals from Italy in retaliation for Rome's Schengen suspension. Piantedosi went on to say that there were checks on Italy also by other EU countries, but none had expressed concerns, adding that Madrid's Schengen suspension was "merely a retaliatory approach". Regarding the suspension of Schengen with Spain, "what the government has chosen to do is fully within European law," he said. "Other European states have done so and continue to do so, including with respect to Italy. I am not aware of any concerns or requests for further investigation being expressed in those circumstances. "While Italy's initiative is based on solid objective foundations and monitoring activity, the suspension implemented by the Madrid authorities against us corresponds, by their own admission, to a substantially retaliatory approach." Madrid last week called on Italy to stop the selective border checks it has been conducting on people arriving via air and sea from Spain after suspending its Schengen arrangements with Spain following the arrival of the thousands of migrants at Ceuta on July 30-31. During an emergency video-conferenece call of EU interior ministers on August 4, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska reiterated Madrid's position that the move was pointless as entry to the exclave does not automatically give access to the Schengen area. "I ask that these additional controls be lifted immediately because they clearly do not correspond to what was recognized (during the EU ministers' video call), namely that the Schengen area was never in danger," Grande Marlaska told a news conference after the call. "I did not understand Italy's closure of the Schengen Area; it seemed completely unnecessary and disproportionate to me. "We'll see what happens and if there will be a change of heart. "There was no risk of secondary movement, as Ceuta has a special status and Frontex itself reported that the Schengen Area was never at risk. "We see secondary movements of people entering Spain from the East, and we are not implementing internal controls (within the Schengen Area)". During the call, Piantedosi said the "temporary reinstatement of internal air and maritime border controls" with arrivals from Spain was "in no way a measure directed against Spain or any other partner. "It is a precautionary and organizational decision, intended to safeguard national security and the integrity of the entire European control system at a time of significant strain, as has occurred in many other cases," he continued, expressing Italy's "sincere solidarity" to the Spanish government. European Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner told a news conference after the call that the EU executive would assess whether Italy's suspension of Schengen arrangements with Spain was proportionate. He also said Spain's recent amnesty that enabled over 600,000 undocumented migrants to obtain resident permits was "not a good signal," something Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani have also taken issue with. Owners donate €500,000 to help rehouse people evacuated from occupied Rome building

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 12 - The owners of the Spin Time complex, a 10-storey Rome building that had been occupied for over a decade, said Wednesday that they would donate 500,000 euros to help the City of Rome address the housing emergency that erupted when a fire on July 29 prompted police to evacuate the property. Since the fire the approximately 400 inhabitants, including some children and elderly and disabled people, have been living in tents in the street outside amid Italy's ongoing rampant heatwave. The Rome city council's centre-left administration had been in talks with the buildings' owners to buy the complex to use it for social housing but talks broke down last week. The bid to buy the building had been controversial with critics, including Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, saying it would have rewarded squatting. Investire Sgr, the company that owns the property in Rome's Via Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, said it would be up to the council to "identify the necessary facilities and services and handle the related procedures" in relation to the use of the donation.

Anlaşmada İsrail’in düşman olarak tanımlanmadığına dikkat çeken Noy, buna rağmen Tel Aviv’in yalnızca anlaşmanın maddelerine bakarak daha geniş stratejik tabloyu gözden kaçırmaması gerektiğini savundu. Yazıda, ‘Türkiye, Suudi Arabistan ve Pakistan’ın İsrail’i, resmen düşman ilan etmesini beklemeye gerek yok. Meloni, Frederiksen release joint message against 'uncontrolled immigration'

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 10 - Premier Giorgia Meloni and her Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen released a joint message on Monday saying the EU must combat "uncontrolled immigration" amid tension between Rome and Madrid over the suspension of Schengen arrangements between the two countries following the dramatic wave of migrants that arrived at the Spanish North African enclave of Ceura at the end of last month. "No one can deny the negative impacts of illegal immigration on our societies: increased crime rates, increasing pressure on public services and erosion of citizens' trust," Meloni and Frederiksen said. "It is particularly serious when illegal immigrants, deprived of the right to remain in our nations, commit violent crimes, deal drugs or become responsible for sexual violence. "Understandably, European citizens expect concrete actions from their own political representatives. "For too long, ordinary people especially have paid too high a price because of uncontrolled immigration. "It is our duty to continue to work resolutely to offer concrete answers to citizens, especially those most exposed, and to ensure greater safety and protection for our communities. "Together we have managed to change the balance in the application of the European Convention on Human Rights with regard to foreign citizens who commit serious crimes. "Consequently, deportations now should be increased. "And what more can we do now? Repatriation centres must be created in third countries, as well as other innovative solutions outside Europe. We are working hard on this. "But this isn't enough. Respect for our laws must go hand in hand with respect for European values. "This is true for illegal immigrants, but also for the millions of foreign citizens who live legally in our nations and throughout Europe. "We are both proud of the Christian cultural heritage of Europe and we want to protect it. "We expect that those who come to our countries and choose to make Europe their home, respect our values and do not try to impose models of life that we do not share. "We believe that this is the right way to protect Europe and our common values. And we believe that millions of Europeans share this belief". (ANSA). Read article...

Sanchez vs Meloni: Spain imposes Italy border checks as Ceuta migrant row escalates

Spain has implemented temporary border checks on travelers arriving by air and sea from Italy, intensifying tensions between these two European Union nations regarding migration policies. Italy had previously enacted similar measures following a significant influx of migrants into Spain. This ongoing conflict underscores the contrasting perspectives on border regulations and the management of migrants within the European Union.

Italy defies Spanish demand to lift border curbs over Ceuta migrant crisis

Spain threatened on Friday to impose restrictions on travellers from Italy unless Rome lifts by Sunday the border controls it introduced last week following a mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Italy swiftly responded, saying it would not accept “ultimatums or impositions” from Madrid, adding that it would keep in place its suspension of Schengen rules for non-EU nationals arriving from Spain until at least August 15. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s conservative government had previously said the more robust travel checks would remain in force until the end of the month. The Spanish government said Italy’s decision to reintroduce controls on arrivals from Spain was “unjustified, contrary to the interests of the European Union and discriminatory against the Spanish population”. It promised to adopt “proportionate measures” against Italy unless Meloni rolled back the new constraints by Sunday. However, in a toughly worded statement, Meloni’s office said Spanish authorities had themselves warned of a new migrant influx into Ceuta on August 15. It said it would only reconsider its decision once it was certain there was no new migration wave, no security or terrorism risk to Italy and no irregular migrants heading towards European territory. Spain’s Civil Guard has said it is aware of calls online for a fresh border crossing attempt at Ceuta on August 15, however it is not clear how many people might take part. Spain accuses Italy of ignoring facts As many as 72,000 people rushed to cross the border last week and dozens died in the attempt. Most have since returned to neighbouring Morocco but hundreds of unaccompanied minors remain in Ceuta. Italy, which does not share a land border with Spain, justified its decision to partially suspend the EU’s border-free Schengen arrangements to prevent any of the migrants who entered Ceuta from travelling to Italy. There has been no indication that any of them want to travel to Italy, or have the money to pay for an airline ticket. Madrid said the Italian move was based on “spurious arguments” that lacked any factual basis because the migrants who entered Ceuta irregularly could not gain access to the Schengen area. Italy and Spain split on migration policy The dispute between the two EU allies marks a new low in relations between the right-winger Meloni, and Spain’s Socialist prime minister, Pedro Sanchez. Meloni has positioned herself as one of Europe’s leading advocates of tighter immigration controls, while Sanchez has generally defended a more liberal approach and recently backed a large-scale regularisation programme for undocumented migrants. “I think what were saying is reasonable. What doesn’t hold water at all is Italy’s stance towards Spain. The impression is that Ms Meloni is on a crusade,” Spain’s Youth Minister Sira Rego told Spanish public broadcaster TVE1. In Friday’s statement, the Spanish government said Italy had registered the highest number of “irregular crossings in recent years”, with figures that have been double those of Spain.

Italy says it doesn't accept Spain's 'ultimatum' on border checks

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 7 - Premier Giorgia Meloni's office said Friday that Italy will not comply with the deadline of August 9 the Spanish government has set for it to end the selective border checks it has been conducting on people arriving via air and sea from Spain. Rome suspended its Schengen arrangements with Spain following the arrival of thousands of migrants at the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta last week. "Italy does not accept ultimatums or impositions from abroad about national security and border control," the statement said. "We have no intention of reconsidering the decision to suspend the application of the Schengen Agreement for third-country nationals arriving from Spain, at least until August 15, and, in any case, until security and terrorism risks for Italy have been completely eliminated. "On that date, as announced by the Spanish authorities themselves, a new wave of migrants is expected in Ceuta. "Only when we are certain that there will be no security or terrorist risks for Italy, that there will be no new wave, and that there are no irregular migrants heading towards European territory, will we be able to review the decisions already made. "This is not done out of prejudice towards a friend country like Spain, as it is like similar decisions taken in the past by the Italian government towards Slovenia, for example, and by (other) European governments towards Italy and Spain itself. "If all these conditions cease to exist, Italy is ready to continue a constructive dialogue with the Madrid government. "In the meantime, the Italian border authorities will do everything to ensure maximum accessibility for Spanish and European citizens who, it is important to emphasize, are not affected by the reinstatement of air and sea border controls". Nobel winner Parisi writes to people living in street after fire at occupied building

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 7 - Nobel-prize-winning Italian physicist Giorgio Parisi on Friday wrote to the activists of Spin Time, a grassroots group that had been running an occupied 10-storey building in Rome for over a decade to give shelter to people with nowhere else to go until a fire on July 29 prompted police to evacuate it. Since then the approximately 400 inhabitants, including some children and elderly and disabled people, have been living in tents in the street outside amid Italy's ongoing rampant heatwave. "History teaches us that many important changes have come about when different people have found a way to unite to address a common problem," Parisi wrote. "The struggles of construction workers and those for housing rights demonstrate this too: dignity has never been a gift, but always the result of collective effort. "In physics, we know that even in moments of instability, a new equilibrium can emerge. "But this requires time, attention, and care. "Like complex systems, communities need to be supported, listened to, and accompanied. "Spin Time's experience is invaluable; initiatives like these are essential for reducing social inequalities, eliminating marginalization, and building constructive solidarity. "Inequalities and marginalization are the worms that undermine our democracy, and everyone should be on the side of those who fight them concretely, not just with words! "To all the people at Spin Time and to those who are offering help, assistance, and solidarity during these days: I send my support. "I hope this day is a moment of strength, unity, and hope". The Rome city council's centre-left administration had been in talks with the buildings' owners to buy the complex to use for social housing but talks broke down on Thursday. The bid to buy the building had been controversial with critics, including Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, saying it would have rewarded squatting. "Spin Time should be called what it is: an illegal occupation," said Paolo Trancassini, the FdI's regional coordinator for Lazio. "Forget negotiations, concessions, or 'bridge agreements', it must be cleared. "It's a good thing (Rome) Mayor (Roberto) Gualtieri's plan fell through. "He even considered purchasing the building with the money of the people of Rome, practically pandering to the climate of 'proletarian expropriation' that had come around this issue". Trancassini added that, by camping the street, the Spin Time residents were deliberately trying to put pressure on the building's owners and on the public institutions. (ANSA). Read article...

Authorities working on solutions with hundreds displaced by latest Campi Flegrei quake

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 5 - Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi promised on Wednesday that the public institutions were working to deliver solutions for local people after Friday's 4.7-magnitude earthquake in the area of the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera near Naples. Although the strongest quake in the area in decades, it was only the latest in a series over the last three years in the Campi Flegrei, which also known the Phlegrean Fields in English and is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground uplift. Friday's quake caused landslides, major damage to properties and injuries to 26 people, including five who remain in hospital, two of whom are in a serious condition. Around 700 people have been evacuated from their homes after scores of buildings were declared unfit for use, in addition to 13 schools and 14 places of worship, while water supplies to some areas have been cut off since Friday. On Tuesday Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet approved 100 million euros in funding for start the work needed to make residential buildings safe to use. "We are all focused on finding viable solutions to a highly complex problem, aiming to restore a sense of calm to the residents of an area that has faced significant challenges in its history," said Piantedosi following a meeting at the Naples Prefecture with regional and city authorities. "It is to be expected that we will continue to experience this phenomenon in the years to come". The Minister also met with a delegation of local residents. (ANSA). Read article...

Naples hospital compensates family of boy who died after damaged-heart transplant

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 5 - The authority that runs the Monaldi hospital in Naples has reached an agreement with the family of Domenico Caliendo, a two-year-old boy who died in February after having a damaged heart transplanted into him in December at the hospital, for compensation to settle the civil case, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday. "We are fully satisfied and so is his mother, Patrizia," said the lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi. "Monaldi has awarded us compensation and, above all, spared us a civil trial that would have caused the family further pain. "Now we can focus on the criminal proceedings". Seven medical professionals face charges of culpable homicide over the boy's death. It is suspected that the heart was damaged because the refrigerated container used to transport it from Bolzano to Naples was not up to standard and, above all, because dry ice was used to conserve its condition instead of ordinary ice. The case moved the entire nation. Premier Giorgia Meloni called the boy's mother to express her solidarity and promise that justice would be done. (ANSA). Read article...

Across the EU, immigration being used as a 'political tool' across the political spectrum

Delano D'Souza is pleased to welcome Dr. Manlio Graziano, Founder and Director of Nicholas Spykman International Center for Geopolitical Analysis. Italy's temporary suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain, following the migration episode in Ceuta, is presented less as a meaningful European policy than as a symbolic act driven by domestic politics. Dr Graziano argues that the episode reveals how migration has become an instrument of political positioning rather than policy making. His analysis suggests that Giorgia Meloni's principal audience is not Brussels or Madrid, but Italy's increasingly fragmented right, where competition from parties positioned even further to her right is compelling her to continually reaffirm her hardline credentials.

Italy to propose Albania-style EU migrant hubs at post-Ceuta meeting

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 3 - Italy will propose the creation of EU migrant hubs outside the bloc along the lines of its centres in Albania at Tuesday's emergency meeting of European interior ministers following the arrival of thousands of migrants at the Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta last week, sources have said, confirming newspaper reports. Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has suspended arrangements regarding the Schengen agreement allowing for control-free movement between borders with Spain for a month following the events in Ceuta. Madrid and Italy's opposition parties have blasted the move as propaganda, given that entry to the enclave does not automatically give access to the Schengen area and that Italy does not border Spain. Most of the migrants who reached the enclave, many swimming around the border, have left. At Tuesday's meeting Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi will propose the creation of new hubs for the repatriation of irregular migrants financed with European funds and mostly located in Africa, the sources said. There is reportedly already a preliminary list of countries that could be involved, including Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Egypt, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Montenegro, and Ethiopia.. Italy is also expected to request strict implementation of the 'GSP+' programme, a system that links tariff benefits for developing countries to their cooperation in taking back their citizens who are residing illegally in the EU. The programme was approved this year and is set to take effect on January 1, 2027. (ANSA). Read article...

Spain’s North Africa enclave returns to normal as migrants depart

CEUTA: Almost all of the tens of thousands of migrants who entered Spain’s enclave of Ceuta in North Africa had left by Saturday, officials said, as some EU countries bolstered their border controls over the sudden influx. An estimated 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta over just a few days from neighbouring Morocco, the enclave’s regional president Juan Jesus Vivas told reporters, but by Saturday almost all had left. “The situation has been almost entirely reversed,” interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska told reporters. Under the watch of Spanish soldiers and police, the remaining young migrants continued crossing back over the border to Morocco. Any who lingered too long on the coastal path were immediately ushered back out by the soldiers. To cross into Ceuta, many swam around a small border barrier that juts out into the Mediterranean. Sixty-seven people died in the attempt. “We hope to go to Europe to work and earn a living. That’s it,” Souleye Bodian, 19, a Senegalese migrant, said outside a migrant centre in Ceuta where dozens of other sub-Saharan African migrants waited for officials. “We all know that in Africa there isn’t much opportunity,” he said. The sudden influx of migrants had sparked political panic in Europe. Coordinated response The EU said it would hold a video meeting on Tuesday after 22 bloc members issued a joint open letter calling for a meeting of interior ministers “as a matter of urgency” to agree a speedy coordinated response, and to “prevent further uncontrolled crossings”. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X: “Defending the external borders of the Union is not the interest of a single nation. It is a shared responsibility of Europe.” Italy suspended its Schengen agreement with Spain allowing for visa-free movement between borders as of Saturday for one month. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a letter to the heads of the European Commission and European Council, blasted the “selfish” reaction by some EU countries. He backed a video meeting of interior ministers. Ursula von der Leyen, the EU chief, said on X that the bloc needed “a lessons-learned process to improve our European resilience”, while pointing out that “not a single person reached mainland Spain or the rest of the EU” during the influx. Madrid had rushed security personnel and equipment to the North African outpost that it has run for centuries. After a night of wandering the beaches and streets of Ceuta or sleeping on the sand, eyewitnesses observed, some young people turned back to say “adios”, or “goodbye”, to officials before crossing back to Morocco. More soldiers stood guard on the small beach next to the border fence, positioned under parasols in the morning. Published in Dawn, August 2nd, 2026

Italy suspends Schengen agreement with Spain: foreign minister

Italy has suspended its Schengen agreement with Spain, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday, calling the measure “unavoidable”. “The temporary suspension of Schengen with Spain is a necessary choice to safeguard the security of our citizens and defend the European borders,” he wrote in a post on X. He noted that the influx of migrants in Ceuta, Spain, “reminds us that the management of the Union’s borders is a shared responsibility among our countries, one toward the other”. “We must work together to prevent uncontrolled migrant flows from entering EU territory, with all the consequent risks and the threat of terrorism, which must be countered without hesitation,” he added. US President Donald Trump led far-right attempts on Friday on both sides of the Atlantic to make political capital from Spain’s migration crisis, portraying the migrant surge in Ceuta as a warning for America if his opponents get into power. “It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,” Trump was quoted as saying by Fox News. “If the Democrats get in, you will not live a very good life.” With polls showing Trump’s support has fallen into the low 30 per cent range and opposition Democrats hoping to win at least partial control of Congress in November midterm elections, the crisis in Spain offers Republicans a chance to return to one of their political strongpoints. News footage of migrants overwhelming barriers to get into Ceuta — a tiny Spanish territory on the Moroccan coast — aired repeatedly on Fox News and went viral across right-wing Trump-allied social media accounts. In Europe, far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) co-leader Alice Weidel claimed in an X post that “Ceuta was left in ruins overnight” by the mass influx from Morocco. She argued that Germany is “likely the destination for most of these migrants”. “Germany must prepare itself: borders must be secured and rejections rigorously enforced,” wrote Weidel, whose party is backed by top Trump officials. Both Italy’s right-wing prime minister Giorgia Meloni and the populist right-wing ruling coalition in Finland called for excluding Spain from the European visa-free zone as a result of the situation. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, a billionaire Trump supporter, said the Ceuta situation was caused by Spain’s policy of offering hundreds of thousands of migrants already in the country a legal status. “They are replacing Spaniards with migrants,” Babis said. ‘Invasion of the West’ Trump’s election victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024 was fueled by voter worries over uncontrolled migration on the US-Mexico border and his lurid warnings of migrants coming to murder Americans and even to eat their pets. Trump’s vice president, JD Vance, posted news footage on Friday of migrants pouring into Ceuta on X and wrote it highlighted “radical left-wing globalist policies that have enabled the Invasion of the West.” “These images out of Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration,” Vance posted on X. Late on Thursday, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, a chief architect of Trump’s anti-migration crackdown, posted video of the Ceuta crisis and said, “Democrats will see your home trampled and stolen by invaders and they will rejoice.”

Dışişleri Bakanı Tajani, İspanya'nın Schengen'den çıkarılması çağrısının da ötesine geçerek Ceuta'daki olayların sorumluluğunu, yüz binlerce belgesiz göçmene yasal statü sözü veren İspanya Başbakanı Pedro Sánchez'in göç politikalarına yükledi. Bu sözler İspanya Dışişleri Bakanı José Manuel Albares'in tepkisine yol açtı. Albares, Tajani'nin açıklamaları hakkında hesap vermesi için İtalya Büyükelçisini Bakanlığa çağırdı. Albares, X platformunda Tajani'ye yanıt vererek, "Bu mesaj, kendisinden parti demagojisi değil Avrupa dayanışması beklediğimiz ortak ve dost bir ülkenin dışişleri bakanına yakışmamaktadır" diye yazdı.

Tension with Madrid after Italy calls for Schengen suspension over Ceuta

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 31 - Relations between Italy and Spain are tense after Premier Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani mooted Spain being suspended from the EU's visa-free Schengen travel zone as thousands of migrants managed to enter Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta on Thursday and Friday, many swimming around the border. "The images coming from Ceuta are striking and demonstrate, once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a concrete threat to the security of Europe's borders," Meloni said via X on Thursday. "I have spoken with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. Italy will not stand by and watch. "We are convening the relevant bodies, and following these meetings, we are prepared to intervene with extraordinary measures to defend the borders and the safety of citizens, including the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain. "We will not yield an inch on illegal immigration: defending borders, stopping human traffickers, and ensuring effective repatriations will continue to be this government's line". Before that, Tajani had said be was in favour of closing the Schengen area with Spain. "Irregular, uncontrolled immigration poses a danger to national security," Tajani said via X. "The images coming from Ceuta show how the Madrid Government's decision to grant Spanish, and therefore European, citizenship to over 500,000 irregular immigrants is profoundly wrong and encourages human trafficking". In response, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Luis Albares said that tweet was "unbecoming of the Foreign Minister of a partner and friendly country from which we expect European solidarity and not partisan demagoguery" and announced he had summoned the Italian ambassador to Madrid on Friday.

SANCHEZ CEUTA'YA GİDİYOR Başbakan Pedro Sanchez'in bugün Ceuta'yı ziyaret ederek bölgedeki son durumu yerinde incelemesi bekleniyor.

Italy not breaching EU rules on facial recognition - govt sources

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 30 - Sources at Premier Giorgia Meloni's office said Thursday that Italy complies with, and will continue to comply with, EU law on the use of facial-recognition systems in public spaces amid controversy over a measure in a government decree implementing the European AI Act here. The measure would make it possible for the biometric data of anyone passing in front of a video-surveillance camera in locations deemed sensitive, such as a sports stadium or at a demonstration, to be stored for seven days. If a crime were then committed by someone in this period, it would be possible to use the material for investigative purposes. Otherwise, the data would be erased. The opposition have said the measure is a dangerous step forward in the use of AI-powered video surveillance systems to identify suspects at the detriment of civil liberties. After the decree cleared the Senate's EU Policies Committee on Wednesday, a vote in the equivalent committee in the Lower House was postponed on Thursday amid a furore. A European Commission spokesperson said Thursday that the AI Act bans facial recognition in accessible public space while stressing that they did not have specific information about the Italian decree and were not commenting on it. The sources at Meloni's office said the government was intent on respecting EU law. "Italy will continue to comply with European regulations regarding facial recognition in accessible public spaces, starting with the AI Act, as it has done so far, in accordance with constitutional guarantees and civil liberties, the enforcement of which is the responsibility of the judicial authorities," said the sources. "We were the first in Europe to adopt comprehensive legislation and to implement it swiftly. "The government will continue to work in this direction, in line with the vision it has pursued from the outset for the development and application of AI that is human-centred and governed by humans". The debate on facial recognition takes place in the aftermath of rioting in Bologna last week following the death of a Moroccan man who was being restrained by police and violence in the Susa Valley last weekend by protesters against the TAV Turin-Lyon high-speed rail link. Scores of police officers were injured in both. (ANSA). Read article...

Man dies saving son as canopy collapses at worksite near Brindisi

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 29 - A 66-year-old construction company owner, Antonio D'Errico, died on Wednesday while saving his 26-year-old son during an accident at a worksite in Mesagne, near the southern Italian city of Brindisi, according to initial reports. It seems that D'Errico realized a canopy on the site was about to collapse and rushed over to warn the son, effectively saving him, before being crushed. The son is in Brindisi's Perrino hospital in a critical condition. Workplace deaths are a major problem in Italy and Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said boosting health and safety is a priority. It has launched a digital badge for contractors and sub-contractors on construction sites, aimed at improving safety. Trade unions say an average of three workers a day die in workplace accidents in Italy. (ANSA). Read article...

Union call strike as ruling adds to uncertainty over ex-ILVA steelworks' future

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 28 - Trade unions representing workers at the former ILVA steelworks in Taranto on Tuesday called an eight-hour strike following a meeting with the government which took place the day after a ruling by a Milan court increased uncertainty about the future of the plant. The court upheld a motion presented on health grounds by ten members of a parents' association and a child with a rare genetic mutation and ruled that activity at the plant must stop within three months unless all the asbestos on the site is removed and measures to bring particulate emissions within safe limits are taken. The ruling, which has heightened fears of job losses, came at a delicate phase in negotiations to sell the plant, which Indian group Jindal and US-based private investment group Flacks are interested in buying. After Monday's ruling, Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet approved €100 million in funding to keep the steelworks afloat for the time being. The Taranto factory, once Europe's biggest steelworks, has been dogged by economic problems in recent years and linked to high cancer rates in the Puglia port city. ADI, the group that owns the Taranto plant, was put into State-controlled administration early in 2024 after ArcelorMittal's ownership of the group ended acrimoniously. "The (Milan) ruling exacerbates a situation of total uncertainty, but we say that rulings should not be disputed, they should be applied," said Davide Sperti of the Uilm union. "If there is a health risk, the workers are the first to be exposed to it. "This is why we have been calling for extraordinary protection and compensation measures for years, starting with a special law that gives workers back what they have lost". (ANSA). Read article...

Govt cuts diesel duties by 17 cents to help with rise in fuel costs

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 28 - A 17-cent cut in diesel duties that the government approved on Monday to help people cope with high fuel costs following the return of conflict in the Persian Gulf came into effect on Tuesday and will remain in place until August 6. The cut will cost the State around 125 million euro and should bring diesel prices in line with those for unleaded petrol, the duties of which have not been reduced. Premier Giorgia Meloni described the cut as "a timely, responsible response" to the recent increase in fuel prices. The government has not ruled out further measures. (ANSA). Read article...

Meloni tells opposition to apologize over Ranucci case 'insinuations'

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 27 - Premier Giorgia Meloni said Monday that Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein and other opposition figures should apologize for having allegedly suggested the government was linked to a bomb attack last year on the home of Sigfrido Ranucci, an investigative reporter for State broadcaster Rai. Prosecutors have put businessman, restaurateur and former journalist Valter Lavitola, a friend of Ranucci's, under investigation for allegedly commissioning the attack. "For months Elly Schlein and other figures on the left constructed a narrative made up of allusions and insinuations," Meloni said on social media. "What was always clear has now come to light—namely, that the government had absolutely nothing to do with it. "The secretary of the Democratic Party has even gone so far as to retract her own words, claiming she never made any such connection. "Words carry weight. So do insinuations. "And those who chose to cast a shadow on the government and on Italy—including before an international audience—should not deny the evidence today. "They should simply apologize". (ANSA). Bologna mayor given security escort following threats linked to Moroccan's death

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 27 - Bologna's centre-left Mayor Matteo Lepore has been given a security escort, having come under a barrage of online threats after he organized a demonstration last week calling for the truth about the case of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan man who died while being restrained by police in the city. While that demonstration passed off peacefully, protests in other parts of the city turned into a riot last Monday, with 64 police officers injured and massive damage caused. Premier Giorgia Meloni's ruling alliance has accused Lepore of deligimitizing the police by organizing the demonstration and being in part to blame for last week's violence - accusations he denies. Around 2,000 people took part in another procession held on Sunday, a week after Fakir died, and there was no trouble. On Monday Lepore said people in Bologna took to the streets because the city was "wounded" by what happened to Fakir. He called on people to march again on August 2 for the anniversary of another wound - the 1980 bombing at the city's central train station in which 85 people were killed. (ANSA). Read article...

    Meloni's Italy: Fortress Europe?

Migration was at the heart of Giorgia Meloni's successful 2022 election campaign. Promising a tougher approach to irregular migration helped propel her to power, but what has her government achieved since then? One of its flagship policies was the creation of a controversial migrant processing centre in Albania. Yet the plan has repeatedly run into legal obstacles in Italy, raising questions about whether it can deliver on its promises. At the same time, Meloni has had to balance her hardline rhetoric with economic realities. Faced with labour shortages and pressure from businesses, her government has authorised around half a million additional work visas for the 2026–2029 period. Has Meloni's migration policy proved more pragmatic than her supporters expected? Whatever the answer, it has created political space on her right. One of the most prominent challengers is former army general Roberto Vannacci, who advocates an even tougher approach to immigration and openly calls for the "remigration" of migrants. Luke Brown reports.

Meloni: The face of Europe's far right?

Giorgia Meloni made history in 2022 when she became Italy's first female prime minister. She quickly signalled her ideological affinity with Donald Trump and positioned herself as a bridge between the MAGA movement in the United States and Europe's radical right. She was also the only European leader invited to attend Trump's second inauguration in 2025. Renaud Lefort examines how the relationship between Trump and Meloni has evolved since then, alongside Meloni's changing role within the European Union. While she has sought to strengthen Italy's influence in Brussels, critics argue that she has moderated some of her more hardline positions in order to remain politically influential. The report features an interview with Gianfranco Fini, founder of the post-fascist National Alliance, where Meloni began her political career more than two decades ago. Historian and Italian politics specialist Marc Lazar also assesses Meloni's first three years in office, examining what he describes as authoritarian tendencies in her approach to governing.

Man stabs and seriously injures robber he caught burgling his home

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 24 - A 50-year-old man stabbed and seriously injured a hooded robber after catching him burgling his home in Ramacca, near the Sicilian city of Catania, early on Friday, sources said. The homeowner wounded the 37-year-old intruder with a kitchen knife during a violent struggle, the sources said. The Eastern European burglar tried to flee but was tracked down a short distance from the home by Carabinieri police. He is in hospital in a serious condition in the town of Caltagirone and is under guard following his arrest for burglary and aggravated assault. The case is likely to fuel a passionate debate about self defence and victims' right to respond to crime after Mario Roggero, a 72-year-old Italian jeweller, was sentenced to 14 years and nine months in prison for shooting dead two robbers and wounding a third as they fled after a heist at his store in 2021. The plight of Roggero, who entered prison last week after the supreme court upheld his conviction, making it definitive, has caused widespread dismay and outrage in Italy. Premier Giorgia Meloni said Sunday that Roggero's punishment was "disproportionate" and several members of the government have called for him to be granted a pardon. (ANSA). Read article...

Positive relations with Meloni will continue with Burnham - British ambassador

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 22 - The good relations Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni had with previous British heads of government will continue with new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the UK's Ambassador to Italy Stephen Hickey told ANSA on Wednesday. "I warmly welcome the fact that Giorgia Meloni enjoyed such a positive relationship with Keir Starmer, and also with Rishi Sunak before him," Hickey, who took over at the embassy in Rome last month after previously being the British envoy in Iraq, told ANSA in an interview. "I am confident that Andy Burnham and Giorgia Meloni will get along well and will want to continue the strong, positive relationship that Premier Meloni enjoyed with her two predecessors. "I believe there are many things we can work on together. "Firstly, the security challenges posed by Russia and the question of how to strengthen NATO, as well as how to consolidate our relationship with the United States at such a critical time. "There's a lot they can work on together, and I believe we share the same interests and priorities in foreign policy. "So I'm very confident that Andy Burnham will have a very positive relationship with Giorgia Meloni". Hickey also expects Burnham to strengthen the UK's relations with Europe as a whole. "With all the changes happening in the world right now - the rise of China, disruptive new technologies like AI, and the changing relationship between the United States and Europe, with Europe taking on an increasingly important role in European security - it is more important than ever for democracies like the United Kingdom and Italy, and other major countries within the EU, to collaborate concretely, particularly on security, defence, and foreign policy," he said. He said this this process is already underway, citing the way European countries are cooperating on Ukraine. (ANSA). Read article...

No justification for Bologna riots after Moroccan man's death says Meloni

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 21 - Premier Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday that there could be no justification for Monday's rioting in Bologna by protesters demonstrating about the case of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan man who died in the city on Sunday while being restrained by police. Bologna police said Tuesday that 64 officers were injured, with prognoses ranging from three to 35 days, and six of its vehicles were damaged while the windows of shops and banks were scrawled with graffiti or smashed. Dozens of electric bicycles worth around 30,000 euros used by protestors to create barricades were destroyed too. The city council said that three of its vehicles were torched and several dozen dumpsters were also set alight. "What happened in Bologna is unacceptable," Meloni said via social media. "It is imperative that any responsibility regarding the death of Abderrahim Fakir be investigated with the utmost rigour. "The truth must be pursued to the very end, without prejudice and without leniency for anyone. "But nothing can justify violence against law enforcement. "Those who chose to use this incident as a pretext to wreak havoc on the city, attack officers, and sow violence—thereby also endangering the safety of citizens completely uninvolved in the unrest—were not seeking the truth: they were seeking confrontation. "Fuelling a climate of hatred and delegitimization toward an entire branch of the State is an act of serious irresponsibility. "Turning thousands of men and women in uniform into targets amounts to striking at those who serve Italy every day with professionalism, sacrifice, and courage". Fakir, who had been in Italy since he was a child, died while being pinned to the ground face down. In a video recorded by a local person, Fakir can be held shouting "help" and "enough" as the police try to restrain him, before he passes out. Paramedics were on the scene but it seems that neither they nor the police initially realized when Fakir stopped breathing. Law enforcement had been called to intervene in Bologna's Pilastro quarter because Fakir was suffering from a "psychiatric crisis" and was disturbing the peace and acting erratically, according to initial findings by investigators, sources said. He allegedly threatened a man who was parking his car in a garage. The police initially tried to calm him down but he allegedly behaved aggressively and kicked their car. The officers used pepper spray on Fakir and then tied his hands and ankles together. Investigators have opened a probe into involuntary manslaughter and are looking into the conduct of the two police officers who tried to arrest Fakir and the four paramedics who were at the scene. A new procedure, the 45 bis model, contained in a recent security decree and aimed at giving greater protection to police officers accused of wrongdoing while doing their job is being used for the first time in this case, sources said. As a result, instead of being formally placed under investigation automatically, the officers' names will be inserted into the preliminary annotation of the probe. Fakir's family condemned Monday's violence while demanding full light be shed on his death. "We will not allow my uncle's memory to be tarnished," said Fakir's niece Yossra Fakir. "We are enduring immense grief, but it must not be turned into violence —absolutely not. "My uncle is not just a number or a case file; he was a person with a life and a family seeking answers. "What happened cannot be dismissed as a mere mistake or a tragic accident; it is right to ask why. "We want the truth and accountability. "We ask for respect for my uncle—for his memory and dignity—and for his family. We will continue to make our voices heard until we get answers." (ANSA). Read article...
