Bologna police said Tuesday that 64 officers were injured, with prognoses ranging from three to 35 days, and six of its vehicles were damaged while the windows of shops and banks were scrawled with graffiti or smashed. Dozens of electric bicycles worth around 30,000 euros used by protestors to create barricades were destroyed too. The city council said that three of its vehicles were torched and several dozen dumpsters were also set alight. "What happened in Bologna is unacceptable," Meloni said via social media. "It is imperative that any responsibility regarding the death of Abderrahim Fakir be investigated with the utmost rigour. Law enforcement had been called to intervene in Bologna's Pilastro quarter because Fakir was suffering from a "psychiatric crisis" and was disturbing the peace and acting erratically, according to initial findings by investigators, sources said. He allegedly threatened a man who was parking his car in a garage. The police initially tried to calm him down but he allegedly behaved aggressively and kicked their car. The officers used pepper spray on Fakir and then tied his hands and ankles together. Investigators have opened a probe into involuntary manslaughter and are looking into the conduct of the two police officers who tried to arrest Fakir and the four paramedics who were at the scene. A new procedure, the 45 bis model, contained in a recent security decree and aimed at giving greater protection to police officers accused of wrongdoing while doing their job is being used for the first time in this case, sources said. As a result, instead of being formally placed under investigation automatically, the officers' names will be inserted into the preliminary annotation of the probe. Fakir's family condemned Monday's violence while demanding full light be shed on his death. "We will not allow my uncle's memory to be tarnished," said Fakir's niece Yossra Fakir.
