Süper Tayfun Bavi Guam'ı vurdu, Maysak Çin'de can aldı
Süper Tayfun Bavi, Kategori 5 kasırga kuvvetiyle Pazartesi sabahı Guam ve Kuzey Mariana Adaları'nı etkiledi. Özellikle Rota adası doğrudan tayfunun gözüne maruz kaldı; saatte 290 kilometre hıza ulaşan rüzgârlar altyapıda büyük hasara yol açtı, on binlerce kişi elektriksiz kaldı. Yetkililer can kaybı bildirmezken, bölgede 'felaket' boyutunda yıkım yaşandığı ve yapıların haftalarca kullanılamayabileceği uyarısı yapıldı. Eş zamanlı olarak Tayfun Maysak, Çin'in güneyindeki Guangxi bölgesinde sel felaketine neden oldu. Öte yandan Bavi'nin ilerleyerek Çin'in doğu kıyılarını tehdit etmesi bekleniyor.

Super Typhoon Bavi closes in on US Pacific territories
• Storm packs sustained winds of 269km per hour, gusts up to 324km per hour SAIPAN: People in the US territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands readied themselves on Saturday as the second super typhoon since April drew closer, bringing the equivalent of Category 5 hurricane winds. Super Typhoon Bavi was moving westward with sustained winds of 269 kilometres per hour and gusts of 324km per hour, the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre said in an update at 7pm local time. The eye of the storm was expected to pass Monday very close to the small island of Rota between Guam and Saipan, the main island of the Northern Marianas, with winds set to strengthen to 278km per hour. “My girls were saying to me it’s scary, but it will be okay. My house is concrete, so the worst that can happen is a window could blow in,” Arabella Paulino, 48, said on a Guam beach as the sky darkened. “Typhoon Sinkalu in April wasn’t as bad as Mawar in 2023. That brought my whole house down,” Derma Soaladaob, 51, said. “I stay up north, but I’m going to a hotel. I have a concrete house but with the noise and the wind, it’s scary.” Guam was set to go into Condition of Readiness 2 — meaning a typhoon was expected within 24 hours — starting at 10pm. Emergency shelters were due to open Sunday at 7am, the governor’s office said. Residents were told to bring enough food and water to last seven days for each family member to the shelters, as well as medicines and bedding. Pets were not allowed. Any plans for celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary on Saturday, also Liberation Day for Saipan, were quickly overtaken by storm preparations. Both territories declared a state of emergency. Many of the islands’ roughly 200,000 inhabitants queued at gas stations and thronged hardware stores to buy plywood to board up windows while stocking up on essentials. Jeff Garcia, 48, who lives in Kagman Village in the Northern Marianas, said safety was the top priority, adding that they had weathered super typhoons before. “We bought basic needs like water, candles, batteries, and canned goods,” Garcia said. “As a community, our greatest defence is our unity, our preparation and our discipline.” The Northern Marianas archipelago and nearby Guam are home to around 210,000 people. Major battles were fought in the area during World War II. Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which hit in mid-April, knocked out power for tens of thousands of people, uprooted trees, overturned cars and ripped metal roofs off buildings. A cargo ship, the MV Mariana, suffered engine failure and overturned. One crew member’s body was recovered; five others were missing and presumed dead. The American Red Cross warned that some locals were still in temporary shelters, even as it deployed disaster teams ahead of Bavi’s arrival. Em Marilla, 42, of Saipan, said the thought of going through it all again without electricity and water was sad. “Furthermore, the application process for assistance takes far too long, and having to keep spending out of pocket for our daily needs is truly draining,” Marilla said. ‘Catastrophic’ Super Typhoon Bavi hits US island of Rota
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA — A “super typhoon” with equivalent force to a category-5 hurricane made landfall on the US island of Rota in the Pacific on Monday, the National Weather Service said, warning of “catastrophic damage and (a) life threatening situation.” “The western eyewall of Super Typhoon Bavi is currently moving over the island

'Major' damage as super typhoon hits US islands
A “super typhoon” with the force of a category-five hurricane tore through the US Pacific territories of Northern Marianas and Guam on Monday, with authorities saying they had received reports of “major” damage on the small island of Rota. The National Weather Service (NWS) said that the “entirety” of Rota was in the eye of Super Typhoon Bavi, with winds of up to 180 miles per hour before moving “ever so slowly away” westwards. High waves crash against the coastline at a beach as the forecasted Super Typhoon Bavi approaches in Guam on July 5, 2026. —AFP But the group of islands — several thousand kilometres (miles) west of the mainland US — was by midday still being buffeted by fierce winds and driving rain that left residents holed up indoors. When the storm first hit early on Monday, the NWS urged Rota’s roughly 1,500 residents on X to “treat these imminent extreme winds as if a tornado were approaching and move immediately to an interior room or shelter NOW!” Local authorities on Rota — the southernmost part of the Northern Marianas, less than 80 km north of Guam — said they had received reports of “major damage”, but with communications difficult, the extent was unclear. “We are hanging in there. We are experiencing heavy winds and flooding here … Some people are already reporting major damages,” the Rota Municipal Operations Center’s public information officer Lou Rosario said. Rosario added that some cellphone services were down because of a fallen tower. Previously, the NWS had warned that a direct hit on Rota would make most of the island “uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer” with nearly all trees snapped and power outages for “weeks to possibly months”. The island of Tinian, northern parts of Guam and the southern tip of Saipan experienced winds equivalent to a category-one hurricane, NWS meteorologist Marcus Landon Aydlett told a briefing on Facebook Live. “Super Typhoon Bavi is leaving the area,” he said. “Gradually, conditions are going to be improving.” The Northern Marianas and the nearby separate US territory of Guam are collectively home to around 210,000 people. Authorities on Guam had said the island could see eight to 12 inches of precipitation, resulting in potential flash flooding. The NWS said that winds of 50-80 mph and gusts of 100 mph were expected to last through late afternoon. “Residents should remain sheltered in place. NWS continues to describe this as an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation,” it said. Edwin Santa Theresa, a 56-year-old health clinic worker on Tinian, said that residents were “prepared” for the storm. A hotel staff member removes water that leaked into a building during heavy rain brought by Super Typhoon Bavi in Guam on July 6, 2026. —AFP “I think our main problem will be fuel because the supply is limited,” he told AFP. “Our power was only restored to my house four days ago (from a previous typhoon in April), but now it’s out again. I just hope that after this typhoon passes, electricity will be restored quickly.” Rowell Mariano, 61, in Saipan, the main island of the Northern Marianas, also said that the April storm was worse for him. “(Super Typhoon) Sinlaku was stronger because the center of the storm passed directly over Saipan,” he said. “During Sinlaku, our house was flooded because of the strong winds and heavy rain, and our ceiling was damaged. Sinlaku was really traumatic for us.” In 2023, another massive storm, Mawar, the biggest in decades, did huge damage in the area. ‘It hurts’ Several hundred people were holed up at the Guam Plaza Hotel as the windows shook violently and rain leaked into rooms and stairwells. Around 70 percent of people staying in the hotel — which in April spent $800,000 on a backup generator — were locals who had moved in while the storm passed. “Our hotel is locally owned so we cater to our local customers and we are going to make sure they have a shelter here,” general manager Sudipta Basu, 59, told AFP. Already on Sunday afternoon, the roads of Guam and the Northern Marianas were practically deserted except for police cars and surfers driving back from enjoying the huge waves. Almost all stores were closed, many of them with their windows boarded up. Pinky Cubacub, 55, said she bought $500 worth of plywood at a lumber store for her eatery on Guam. “I cannot afford to lose so many days. It hurts,” she told AFP. El Niño The world’s oceans experienced their hottest June on record and could set fresh highs in the months ahead, the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service said on Wednesday. Warmer oceans help tropical storms to intensify and add more moisture, which can fall as heavy rain. The World Meteorological Organisation warned on Friday that El Niño, which typically occurs every two to seven years and lasts nine to 12 months, has already begun in the tropical Pacific and is likely to be strong. The natural climate phenomenon warms surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, bringing worldwide changes in winds, pressure and rainfall patterns. “Our big concern for this being an El Niño year is that it’s going to be a lot busier than we’ve seen in the last five or six years,” said Aydlett of the NWS.

Hundreds of thousands evacuated as Typhoon Bavi barrels towards China
China evacuated more than 600,000 people on Saturday ahead of Typhoon Bavi hitting the major eastern city of Wenzhou after pummelling Japan’s southern Sakishima island chain with heavy rain and violent winds and brushing past northern Taiwan. Even as Bavi continues to slow and weaken on its northwesterly path over cooler seas, the typhoon is still a potent risk due to the sheer volume of moisture it holds within its rain bands, about the size of France from end to end. Bavi is forecast to make landfall around Wenzhou, home to some 10 million people, in the early hours of Sunday. State media said more than half a million people had been evacuated in Zhejiang province, where Wenzhou is located, and more than 100,000 in neighbouring Fujian province. We’ve been through typhoons before. We’ll get through it,” said Wenzhou resident Huang Xinghuan, 50, out buying groceries at a traditional wet market before it closed ahead of the typhoon. Huang said his family had stocked about two to three days’ worth of water. “I think supplies are well guaranteed now. There’s no need to panic or stockpile a lot of food or other supplies,” he added. Fishing boats are moored at Zhengbin Fishing Harbor as Typhoon Bavi moves close to the northern coast of Taiwan in Keelung, Taiwan, July 11, 2026. —Reuters While Japan and Taiwan have not so far reported any deaths from the typhoon, 17 people died in the Philippines due to heavy rains brought by an enhanced southwest monsoon, worsened by Bavi’s impact. Taiwan spared worst of Bavi In Taiwan, the government evacuated more than 14,000 people from mainly mountainous areas as the island shut down for the approach of Bavi to the north. While Bavi did not make landfall on Taiwan, the government took precautions to prevent loss of life, given forecasts for almost 1 metre of rain in some areas. Most of those evacuated were in areas in the north and east, with 920 international flights cancelled, effectively closing Taiwan’s main international airport at Taoyuan, outside the capital Taipei, as well as all 280 domestic flights. A man sits next to a screen showing cancelled flights at the departure hall at Naha Airport in Naha, Okinawa prefecture, on July 10, 2026. —AFP Almost all cities and counties across Taiwan declared a typhoon holiday for Saturday, closing any offices and schools that may have been open on the weekend, though in Taipei some restaurants and convenience stores remained open. The main north-south high-speed rail line also continued to operate, but with reduced service. In downtown Taipei, some people were still out on the street in blustery wind and rain. “It’s OK, it’s not that serious,” said resident Yeh Mao-hsiung, 68, out for a morning walk with his dog. “It’s just a little bit more wind.” But in Taipei’s Beitou neighbourhood in the foothills of the mountains surrounding the city, gusts of around 100 kph knocked down trees and swelled rivers. My parents are both elderly and they’re home alone, so I wasn’t at ease,” she said.

Çin'de Bavi Tayfunu nedeniyle alarm durumu sürerken, ülkenin doğusunda tahliye çalışmaları devam ediyor. Japonya'nın Sakishima Adaları'nı şiddetli yağış ve kuvvetli rüzgarların etkisi altına alan Bavi Tayfunu, Çin'in doğusundaki Zhejiang eyaletine bağlı Wenzhou kentine doğru ilerleyişini sürdürüyor. ÇİN'DE 1,9 MİLYON KİŞİ TAHLİYE EDİLDİ Çinli yetkililer, tayfun nedeniyle ülkenin doğu kesimlerinde geniş çaplı tahliye çalışmalarının devam ettiğini bildirdi. Yetkililer, Zhejiang genelinde tedbir amacıyla tahliye edilen kişi sayısının 1,7 milyonu aştığını açıkladı. Zhejiang'a komşu Fujian eyaletinde ise 100 binden fazla kişinin tahliye edildiği bildirildi. Böylece Bavi Tayfunu nedeniyle iki eyalette tahliye edilenlerin toplam sayısı en az 1,8 milyona ulaştı. Beklenen tayfunun yol açabileceği hasar ve güvenlik risklerine karşı limanlarda ve Zhejiang eyaletinin kırsal kesimlerinde önlemler artırıldı. Limanlarda faaliyetler durdurulurken, konteynerler sabitlendi, gemiler güvenli sulara çekildi. Bavi Tayfunu Çin'in doğusunu vurdu: 2 milyon tahliye
Herhangi bir can kaybı rapor edilmedi. Ulaştırma bakanlığı, pazar günü 137 uluslararası uçuş ile 62 iç hat seferinin iptal edildiğini duyurdu. Ulaşımdaki aksamalar Çin'in ulaşım ağlarına da sıçradı.

Typhoon Bavi batters eastern China, threatens days of heavy rain
Nearly two million evacuated as flights, trains cancelled

Typhoon makes landfall in China, downgraded to severe tropical storm
Typhoon Bavi was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Sunday after making landfall in eastern China, where authorities had evacuated nearly two million people in its path. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Before reaching China, the storm lashed northern Taiwan and Japan’s remote southwestern islands, toppling trees and leaving tens of thousands without power. Extreme weather already [wreaked havoc](https://15 killed in Philippines as biggest typhoon in decades …) on southern and central China in the past week, with storms leaving at least 39 dead and causing dozens of rivers to overflow and a reservoir to burst. Bavi first made landfall at around 11:20pm on Saturday (8:20pm PKT) in Zhejiang province with winds of 144 kilometres an hour, state news agency Xinhua said, quoting the provincial meteorological observatory. “The core impact zone experienced fierce winds and heavy rain, with rapid runoff forming on the ground and roadside trees being uprooted,” national TV station CCTV reported as Bavi struck the city of Yuhuan. It then hit Yueqing city, where CCTV said firefighters, rescue workers and municipal employees were clearing “more than 1,300 trees” that had fallen or been uprooted. The eye of the storm had moved near the Zhejiang provincial capital Hangzhou at around 10am (7am PKT) on Sunday with force 10 winds of around 108kmh, the China Weather Administration said. Zhejiang provincial officials forecast torrential rain in coastal regions and the possibility of flash floods, Xinhua said, warning of transport disruptions, rivers overflowing and farmland being inundated. Around 1.72 million people had been evacuated to safe places by Saturday, Xinhua said. ‘Sparing no effort’ Classes, work, transport and outdoor activities were suspended ahead of the storm’s arrival, and more than 300 flights were cancelled in Zhejiang province. Another 684 flights and 1,620 train services have been cancelled in Shanghai, media outlet The Paper said. Images shared online on Sunday showed streets in Zhejiang’s Wenzhou city, a metropolis of nearly 10 million people, submerged in floodwaters. The Wenzhou government said in a statement it was “sparing no effort or cost… to guard against the (worst-case) scenario”. Residents used planks to reinforce metal shutters protecting shops and taped windows, CCTV footage showed. Torrential rain further north prompted the evacuation of more than 100,000 people from their homes in Beijing, the government said. More than 130,000 people have fled their homes in Fujian province and around 34,000 people from Shanghai’s coastal areas and high-risk areas, state media reported. Bavi had been downgraded to a typhoon as it moved across the Pacific Ocean after hitting Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday as a super typhoon. The storm is now forecast to move northeast while “gradually weakening”, before reaching the Yellow Sea on Tuesday and transforming into an extratropical cyclone, the Chinese weather service said. The provinces in its path across China’s east are likely to experience heavy downpours until Monday, it said. Warmer oceans In the Philippines, at least 18 people were killed in landslides and other incidents triggered by heavy rains driven by Bavi, most on the southern island of Mindanao. Nearly 11,000 people across the archipelago fled their homes, and dozens of ports remain closed. In northern Taiwan, more than 14,000 people were evacuated from their homes and hundreds of flights were cancelled. More than 170,000 households across the island were hit by power outages. In Japan, thousands of households and facilities across Okinawa also lost power. Oceans have experienced their hottest June on record and could set fresh highs in the months ahead, the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service said last week. Warmer oceans intensify tropical storms and add more moisture, which can fall as heavy rain. Adding to the mix is the return this year of El Nino, a natural climate phenomenon that warms Pacific Ocean surface temperatures and typically occurs every two to seven years.
