Vespucci heading to New York for July 4, deep friendship with US says Crosetto

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 23 - Italy's famed naval academy training sailboat the Amerigo Vespucci, dubbed the most beautiful ship in he world, is heading to New York for the Fourth of July celebrations there and as a sign of Italy's deep friendship with the United States despite a spat between leaders Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Tuesday. "The Amerigo Vespucci sails to New York to celebrate, on July 4th, the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America," he said on X. "The Vespucci will be there, on a long-planned voyage, to commemorate our century-long relationship with the United States and the deep friendship that binds our two peoples. "She will be there for the 20 million Italian-Americans who helped make that nation great. "She will be there to express our gratitude and to remember the 16,757 American soldiers who rest in our cemeteries or are still missing in Italy, at a time when the Allies' contribution was decisive in the liberation of our country. "She will also be there in the thoughts of the 13,821 American military personnel and 2,575 American civilians, and their families, who work alongside us every day in Italy and are welcomed as brothers in ensuring the security of the Atlantic Alliance." The Vespucci - Crosetto continued - "will be there to remember the sacrifice of the more than 1,000 Italian soldiers who have been killed or wounded in international missions alongside our American allies, NATO, the European Union, and the United Nations, from Afghanistan to the Balkans, as well as our civilians who served with them. "It will be there to reaffirm our shared values, our defense of common ideals, and our determination to continue walking together. "It will be there to bring a piece of Italy to a friendly nation on its birthday. "It will be there with the pride of representing a nation that has honored its values, its commitments, and its allies always, every day, for eighty years." Meloni flatly denied as "made up" Trump's claim that she begged him for a photo op at last week's Group of Seven summit in France, and the president continued to blast Rome for not helping in the Iran war, broadsides which the premier has chosen to ignore.
