US allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to 'trusted' organisations
Anthropic said on Friday that the US government has allowed it to release its powerful Claude Mythos 5 artifical intelligence (AI) model to some “trusted” US organisations, partially reversing an order two weeks ago to suspend access over national security risks. More than 100 companies and institutions will now have access to Mythos 5, including many Fortune 500 companies, a source familiar with the new directive said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. Concern that powerful AI systems could be misused by military intelligence users in China, Russia or other countries of concern has prompted US President Donald Trump’s administration to take an aggressive approach to oversight of releases of Anthropic’s and rival OpenAI’s frontier models. OpenAI said earlier in the day that it was delaying a full public launch of GPT-5.6 at the US government’s request, limiting its access to a small group of vetted partners whose details were shared with the authorities. Anthropic had abruptly disabled its most advanced AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5 for all users after the government’s June 12 export control order. “Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organisations that operate and defend critical infrastructure,” Anthropic said in a statement on Friday. “We’re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we’re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again,” it added. Government criticised for picking who gets access The government’s vetting of which companies can gain access to Mythos has drawn much criticism. “No one knows how these companies are picked and why everyone else is excluded,” said John Coleman, legislative counsel for the Philadelphia-based nonpartisan free speech organisation, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. “This is putting too much power in the hands of the government. There’s little transparency and it raises questions about the rule of law.” OpenAI boss Sam Altman echoed concerns about the government’s choosing of who gets access to top models in a post on X. Extensive safety testing “is not a bad idea. I just don’t like the idea of the government picking the customers,” he wrote. Experts have said that Mythos models, in the wrong hands, could dramatically accelerate sophisticated cyberattacks, particularly in sectors such as banking that rely on complex, interconnected, and often decades-old technology systems. A letter from USCommerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic said there had been “significant progress” in work done by the company with the government to address “risks associated with the Covered Models”. It was not immediately clear what safeguards had been adopted. Anthropic said earlier this month that it understood the government believed there is a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking,” a safeguard that would prevent Fable 5 from being used in identifying software vulnerabilities. No export licence needed for non-US citizens Lutnick said in the letter that an export license will no longer be needed for Mythos 5 to trusted companies and their employees who are not US citizens, or to Anthropic’s employees who are not US citizens, but licensing restrictions will remain in place for companies that are not on the approved list. The source said many of the approved companies are part of Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, which includes about 100 well-known tech companies and institutions. The government is also moving towards allowing Anthropic to release Fable soon, although a timeline is unclear, the source said. Both Fable 5 and Mythos use the same underlying AI model, but Fable 5 is designed to be widely available for public use whereas some safeguards are lifted for Mythos. Both Anthropic and OpenAI plan to go public. Anthropic’s relationship with the US government has, however, been particularly rocky. The company refused to allow the US military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems and the government retaliated by putting it on a national security blacklist. The government’s restrictions on Anthropic and OpenAI follow Trump’s signing of an executive order this month establishing a voluntary framework for AI developers to offer “covered frontier models” to the US government for up to 30 days before releasing them to trusted partners. The administration’s latest order is “a practical interim step, but leaves unresolved the larger issue of how companies can widely release updated models,” said Kate Koren, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington and a former Commerce Department official. “The longer there isn’t a system in place that will allow US companies to widely release new models, the more likely it is that China will be able to catch up,” she said.

Anthropic had “agreed to proactively detect and address security risks associated with the models,” Lutnick said. Both Fable and Mythos use the same underlying AI model, but Fable is designed to be widely available for public use whereas some safeguards are lifted for Mythos. The resumption of the talks is part of ongoing efforts to keep the diplomatic process on track and resolve longstanding disputes between Washington and Tehran. “There are two possible venues for the technical talks — Islamabad and the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland,” one diplomatic source said. “Islamabad, however, is the more likely option.” The technical talks are expected to take place on July 11, although a final decision on the venue has yet to be announced. According to diplomatic sources, the negotiations will focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and Iranian assets frozen abroad. The discussions are also expected to address regional security issues, including efforts to preserve stability in the Strait of Hormuz and maintain the recently agreed ceasefire in Lebanon. The July 11 meeting is intended to advance the framework established under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed two weeks ago, which gave both sides 60 days to negotiate a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme and related issues. The talks were temporarily delayed because of the multi-day state funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian officials have indicated that the composition of Tehran’s delegation will be announced after the funeral ceremonies conclude. The latest diplomatic efforts follow indirect technical discussions held in Doha earlier this week. US President Donald Trump described those talks as “very good”, while Iranian officials said the two sides had reached an understanding on the partial release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. US officials, however, reportedly disputed that any such agreement had been reached. Speaking at an Independence Day event at Mount Rushmore, President Trump mocked the funeral ceremony, saying Washington had “given Iran a week off for a funeral because we’re nice”. “We beat Venezuela in one day, and we knocked the hell out of Iran. They are dying to settle; they want to settle so badly,” he said during a speech marking the start of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the US, Al Jazeera reported on Saturday. “We gave them a week off for a funeral because we are nice,” he added. He also claimed that Tehran was “dying to settle”. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry said Tehran would seek justice against the US and Israel, adding that this would “remain an enduring cause”, according to Al Jazeera. It also said the presence of high-level delegations from across the region and around the world at the farewell ceremonies for the late supreme leader was a clear indication of his stature and the greatness of the Iranian people. Meanwhile, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy said that “divine retribution” against the US and Israel was “not far off”, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. In another development, Iranian parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf hit back at US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on Iran’s food situation. In an interview with CNBC, Trump repeated his claim that Iran would buy agricultural products from the US as part of any future peace deal, a claim Tehran has denied. In a post on X, Ghalibaf responded by dismissing the US president’s assertions. “Imagine having 40-something million of your own citizens on food stamps and calling another nation hungry,” he said. Ghalibaf further said the US must recognise that “realities have changed” following the Israeli-US war against Iran during a meeting with Uzbekistan’s parliamentary speaker, according to Al Jazeera. He said “conditions have improved compared to the past” and that post-war developments had forced Washington to accept “existing realities”. “In such an environment, trade relations can be expanded further, and we hope that the groundwork for lifting sanctions will also be prepared,” he added. The strategic shipping route remains a flashpoint in the conflict, which began in late February with massive US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Tehran insists on controlling the waterway, saying it will charge fees for passage and threatening to hit vessels that deviate from its authorised route. Its military struck at least three ships in recent days, prompting extensive US strikes against Iranian targets Tuesday followed by retaliatory attacks from Iran on Gulf countries. “We’re gonna hit ’em hard tonight,” Trump said at a NATO summit in Ankara in reference to Iran, adding: “They violate the agreement every day.” When asked if the truce was intact, he had said earlier Wednesday that “as far as I’m concerned, it’s over”. “It’s just a waste of time dealing with them,” he added. “I’ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don’t see it. I don’t like these people.” Oil prices jumped eight per cent after Trump said the ceasefire was over, having already reached their highest level in two weeks. Both the US and Iran said they had hit dozens of targets, placing fresh strain on their interim deal to end the war. Iranian state media reported a wave of explosions around the strait, including six on the island of Qeshm, seven in the city of Sirik and more in the major port city of Bandar Abbas. It later reported a series of blasts in the coastal city of Bushehr, which hosts the country’s only civilian nuclear power plant and lies near Kharg island, the main oil terminal through which 90 percent of Iran’s crude exports transit. State media said a member of the military’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had been killed, while the foreign ministry said monitoring and observation sites had been hit on the southern coast. ‘Anxious’ US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had struck more than 80 targets, including Iranian air-defence systems, coastal radar sites and 60 IRGC small boats. The strikes aimed “to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international commerce flowing through the international trade corridor”, it said. Mark Rutte, secretary general of NATO, said at the summit in Ankara that the American strikes were “absolutely necessary”. Tehran’s reply came quickly, with the Guards saying they hit dozens of US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, where an AFP journalist heard blasts. Kuwait said it intercepted two ballistic missiles and 13 drones, while the Iranian army said it had also attacked US forces at Sheikh Isa air base in Bahrain. Nawal Saad, a Bahraini civil servant, lamented that “the spectre of war is looming once more”, saying “I do not want to go through that experience of fear and anxiety again”. Hamad Althunayyan, an assistant professor at Kuwait University, said Tehran views Bahrain and Kuwait “as the most accessible and lower cost pressure points in the Gulf”. Oman, which sits on the other side of Hormuz from Iran, condemned the targeting of Bahrain and Kuwait as well as the strikes on ships, but without blaming Iran. The former mediator has not blamed Iran for attacks throughout the war in an effort to maintain its neutrality, which is being tested by talks with Tehran over the administration of Hormuz. Washington wants free passage for ships while Iran is insisting on fees and has refused to allow vessels to pass through Omani waters. All three vessels recently struck were sailing close to Oman, which had proposed a temporary transit corridor hugging its coastline. ‘Hyperbolic rhetoric’ Maritime traffic had tentatively resumed after Washington and Tehran signed the deal last month. But almost 6,000 seafarers “remain stranded” in the area, International Maritime Organisation chief Arsenio Dominguez said Wednesday. An analyst told AFP the cost of returning to full-blown war would be too high for both sides. “I think Trump’s rhetoric is, as usual, hyperbolic, and doesn’t necessarily mean that the MoU has collapsed”, said Ali Vaez, Iran project director at the International Crisis Group. “Both sides are trying to negotiate the fine print of the MoU through the use of force because the MoU left a lot of issues either unresolved or ambiguous,” he added. “When Iran tries to enforce its control over the strait, it doesn’t matter who violates it. They believe this is the most important achievement that they have had in this war. They’ve shed blood for it. And they’re not going to give it away. “

US launches new strikes on Iran after container ship hit in Hormuz; IRGC announces closure of vital strait
The US military said it launched another round of strikes on Iran — the third in a week — after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a container ship travelling through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Iranian state media has reported explosions in a number of port cities after the strikes. A series of attacks between the US and Iran over the past several days led President Donald Trump to declare the end of a ceasefire meant to halt the war on Iran that the US and Israel began on February 28, though Trump has left the door open to continued negotiations. Iran said it closed the vital Strait of Hormuz after firing a warning shot that struck a vessel travelling on an unapproved route. It warned that any retaliation over the incident would be met with a “severe response.” US Central Command identified the vessel as the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship, saying it suffered significant engine-room damage and that a civilian crew member was missing. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre said the crew of a container ship damaged east of Oman had abandoned the vessel and were in a lifeboat. Soon after, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had destroyed a command and control centre and drone hangars at a base in US ally Jordon. The United Arab Emirates said its air defence systems were engaging missiles and drones from Iran, Qatar said it had intercepted a missile attack while warning sirens sounded in Bahrain and explosions were heard in Doha. Hormuz again the focus of war, diplomacy The war has destabilised the Gulf, while Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has caused energy prices to surge, fuelling global inflation. Higher prices, especially for gasoline, are a politically sensitive issue for Trump ahead of the November congressional elections. Iran said several ships attempted to move through the waterway on an “unauthorised route” and disregarded warnings to correct their course. The strait, which was a conduit before the war for one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG supplies will remain closed until “the end of US interference in this region,” the Revolutionary Guards said. Central Command said it began its strikes at 7:15 p.m. ET (2315 GMT) on Saturday, roughly an hour after the Iranians released their statement, which included a warning that “new enemy bases” in the Middle East would be targeted if the United States retaliated for the container ship incident. Trump ordered the strikes, Central Command said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Washington demands that Tehran publicly state it will stop attacks on ships in the strait and that all lanes will be open without tolls, senior US officials have said. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States of violating the ceasefire agreement. “There can only be mutual compliance,” he wrote on X on Friday. The US revoked the licence authorising the sale of Iranian crude on Tuesday after three Qatari and Saudi commercial tankers came under fire earlier in the week, prompting the US to hit Iranian sites. Iran vows revenge Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi have met in Oman to exchange “views on appropriate mechanisms for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz,” according to a statement from the Iranian foreign minister. Oman’s state news agency said Omani and Iranian negotiators would continue talks “at the technical and political levels.” CNN reported on Saturday that Oman made a draft proposal for the strait, including free navigation through its southern corridor in Omani territorial waters. The plan called for vessels transiting the northern corridor through Iranian territorial waters to obtain prior approval from Iran, although no tolls would be imposed, CNN said. The White House and State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the CNN report. A written statement from Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, on Saturday threatened vengeance for the assassination of his predecessor and father, who was killed in the war’s initial attacks. “We pledge to avenge the blood of the martyred leader and all the martyrs,” the message by Mojtaba said. The statement was released to mark the funeral ceremonies for the former leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Thursday. His son did not attend the ceremony and has not been seen in public since the war began. That is true of Trump too, of course,” said Yezid Sayigh, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center. The conflict has proved unpopular in the US, where gasoline prices have risen since the start of the war and congressional elections are looming in November. Half of those surveyed in a Reuters poll said they believed the war had not been worth its costs. The US and Israel struck Iran on February 28, and Iran attacked Israel and Gulf states that host US bases in a war that also reignited conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, killed thousands and displaced millions. Lebanon and Israel resumed talks on Tuesday in Rome, with Beirut seeking progress towards securing an Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon under a US-brokered deal.

IRGC warns of blocking more waterways after Hormuz as US renews blockade of Iranian ports
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to close “all other export corridors that benefit the US and its allies”, Iranian media reported on Wednesday, after Tehran shut the Strait of Hormuz and the US reimposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports. The IRGC said the renewed US blockade had cut off oil and gas exports to the world, including “America’s economic rivals”, and warned that routes serving US and allied interests could also be shut, Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported on Wednesday. “Regional energy exports are either shared by all or denied to all,” the IRGC said in its statement. It also said that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until “the end of America’s evils”. The vital Strait of Hormuz, which served as the passage for one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply daily during peacetime, is now at the centre of a flare-up in the US-Israeli war on Iran that has rattled the Middle East and pushed up global energy prices. Analysts have said Iran has also been signalling it may use the Houthis in Yemen to shut the Bab-el-Mandeb gateway to the Red Sea, opening a new front against Washington and putting two of the world’s most vital energy arteries at risk. The narrow gateway links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, through which Saudi oil exports and a substantial share of global shipping pass. The Houthis have already shown they can choke global commerce through the Bab-el-Mandeb. After Israel launched an assault on Gaza in October 2023, Houthis launched attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, saying it was targeting vessels linked to Israel in support of Palestinians. The latest threat to global shipping comes a day after the US military said it began a fresh round of strikes “to continue degrading Iranian capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.” The United States claimed Iran had attacked seven commercial ships over the last week, leading to nearly a dozen crew members being killed, missing or injured. Fresh salvo The US military said late on Tuesday that it hit dozens of military targets near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian coastal areas. The wave of strikes lasted seven hours, the US Central Command said in a statement. Iranian state media reported explosions near the port city of Bandar Abbas, on the island of Qeshm and on Bandar Imam Khomeini. According to state broadcaster IRIB, a wheat storage silo in Iran’s southwestern city of Hoveyzeh was also hit by US projectiles. Meanwhile, IRNA said projectiles hit an area near Sirik in southern Iran. None of the Iranian reports mentioned any casualties. Soon after the strikes, sirens rang out in Bahrain, while Kuwait and Jordan reported intercepting drones and missiles fired from Iran. IRNA reported that Iranian forces launched a drone attack on a military base in Jordan that hosts American warplanes, while the Guards had hit US facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. The Guards said they had also targeted command-and-control, logistics, fuel and military equipment facilities belonging to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, in response to the latest US strikes in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC further said it had set fire to and destroyed a US logistics facility in Kuwait’s Mina Abdullah and that its air force had struck a US base at Azraq in Jordan, targeting aircraft hangars. It alleged that some of the US attacks had been launched from bases on Jordanian territory. Kuwait’s state news agency reported that a fire was brought under control at a site targeted in Iranian attacks. It was not immediately clear whether the fire was at the same site referred to in the IRGC statement. The hostilities between Iran and the US reignited last week, fraying an already fragile truce reached in June after several months of fighting that has killed thousands. Since last week, renewed US attacks have killed at least 28 people in Iran, according to an AFP tally based on Iranian media and official announcements. Trump has warned he would widen the strikes on Iran next week to hit power plants and bridges if Tehran does not return to the negotiating table. “Next week it gets really bad for them,” he told Fox News on Tuesday night. The latest strikes came hours after US President Donald Trump backed down on his planned 20 per cent levy on ships using the Strait Hormuz. Tehran insists it controls the key oil shipping corridor, which was open to free navigation before the US-Israeli attacks in late February sparked the ongoing conflict. Tehran has recently also targeted ships in the strait for taking routes it says are unauthorised. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the US decision to restore the blockade “has, in a way, dismantled the Islamabad memorandum”, referring to the interim deal reached last month to halt hostilities and pursue peace talks.
