The Rava Foundation on the Vespucci: 16 Years of Collaboration with the Navy

(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 06 LUG - The Francesca Rava Foundation cites its collaboration with the Italian Navy aboard the Amerigo Vespucci as an example. This collaboration has lasted 16 years—from the response to the Haiti earthquake to the emergency in the Mediterranean, to conflict and crisis scenarios—and has evolved into a model that also focuses on youth training, such as the “Borse Blu” project. During the presentation aboard the ship, which arrived in the Big Apple as part of its World Tour —the 2026 North America Campaign marking the 250th anniversary of the United States—Maria Vittoria Rava, founder and president of the Rava Foundation, recalled “our long-standing collaboration with the Italian Navy, which began in 2010 following the Haiti earthquake. The Foundation had just built a hospital, and we asked ourselves, ‘What can we do to help?’ The incredible thing is that that hospital was one of the few large structures—perhaps the only one—to survive the earthquake,” and it became a hub for international aid, she added. The Italian Navy deployed the ship Cavour to bring relief to the affected population, and “that was the beginning of a close collaboration, under the guidance of Father Rick Frechette, who at the time was coordinating the relief efforts during that dramatic moment,” Rava continued, recalling that she had also been aboard the Nave Vespucci “in the Dominican Republic during the last mission, hosting children from our NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos) orphanages.” Tomorrow, the Rava Foundation—which for 26 years has provided concrete support to children and adolescents in need, as well as to vulnerable mothers and women, in Italy, Haiti, and around the world, will be at the United Nations, and Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, Italy’s permanent representative at the UN, noted that it will be a good opportunity to share their experience in a place where humanitarian work is a central focus. “I believe that together we can give greater visibility to this extremely positive and high-impact initiative,” he added.
