3 Pakistanis die as multiple ships attacked in Gulf waters

    • Six killed as Tanzania-flagged ship attacked in Bab el-Mandeb, says Yemen govt • Houthis claim attack on Saudi ship in Red Sea • US forces ‘disable’ Panama-flagged container ship trying to break blockade DUBAI: Three Pakistanis are said to be among the six people who lost their lives on Tuesday, as three different ships came under attack in the Red Sea and Gulf of Oman, taking simmering tensions in the world’s most key energy trading corridor up another notch. Yemen’s coastguard on Tuesday said strikes by the Houthi rebels on a cargo vessel — identified as the Tihamah — resulted in the death of four sailors and two members of rescue personnel deployed during a rescue mission to evacuate the ship. In a separate incident on Tuesday night, the Saba news agency reported that Houthis attacked a Saudi ship carrying military equipment in Bab el-Mandeb. However, there was no immediate confirmation from Riyadh. The initial salvo targeting the Tanzania-flagged Tihamah “caused a fire to break out aboard the vessel and inflicted extensive damage, in addition to causing deaths and injuries among its crew, including three Pakistani nationals and one Indonesian national killed,” the coastguard said in a statement. A second strike targeted the vessel as rescue workers carried out a mission to evacuate the ship. “The attack struck the site of the rescue operation and resulted in deaths and injuries among the forces participating in the response operation,” the coast guard added, saying 10 people were injured over the course of the strikes. A Houthi-linked media outlet later reported that the group’s armed forces targeted a ship on Tuesday in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait that it said was carrying Saudi military equipment. However, there has been no official comment from the Houthis about the alleged attack, or any word from Pakistan’s Foreign Office regarding the Pakistani casualties. The strikes are the latest in a number of deadly attacks against ships in and around the entrance to the Red Sea since the Houthis announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia last month. Separately, the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova was struck by a missile in an attack off Pakistan while sailing into the Gulf of Oman, maritime security sources told Reuters. The Wall Street Journal reported the vessel was attacked by a US helicopter which fired a Hellfire missile at the ship’s rudder after it tried to evade a US blockade of Iran-linked shipping in the region. Centcom later confirmed that it had fired missiles into the engine room of a Panama-flagged cargo ship that attempted to break the American blockade of Iran’s ports. The US Navy MH-60 helicopter fired on and disabled the M/V Vela Nova “after the ship’s civilian crew ignored repeated warnings from American forces, Centcom claimed. This was the 12th vessel attacked by US forces since its blockade was announced in April and the third since the blockade was re-imposed on July 14. The ship recently made port calls in Mumbai and Port Klang, Malaysia, where Iran-linked ships have also been spotted, said Charlie Brown, senior advisor at US advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), which monitors Iran-related tanker traffic using ship and satellite tracking. “The reported US disabling and stopping of the Panama-flagged Vela Nova near the blockade line in the Gulf of Oman, after its recent Mumbai port call alongside these vessels, underscores the heightened scrutiny now being applied to Iran-related shipping,” he said. The ship was believed to have been hit some 71 nautical miles off Pakistan’s coast, UK maritime risk management group Vanguard said. Published in Dawn, August 12th, 2026

İran Meclisi'nden Hürmüz Boğazı'na ilişkin yasa hazırlığı

Hürmüz Boğazı'na ilişkin hazırlanan yeni yasayla, düşman askeri ve ticari gemilerinin İran'ın izni olmadan Basra Körfezi'ne giriş yapamayacağı açıklandı. İran resmi haber ajansı IRNA'ye göre, Azizi, Gazeteciler Günü münasebetiyle düzenlenen toplantıda konuya ilişkin açıklamada bulundu. Azizi, Hürmüz Boğazı'na ilişkin hazırlanan yasanın İran Meclisi tarafından kabul edilmesi halinde, petrol endüstrisinin millileştirilmesinin ardından ülkenin en önemli ve ilerici yasalarından biri olacağını belirtti. Hazırlanan düzenlemeye göre, "düşman" ülkelere ait hiçbir askeri veya ticari geminin İran'ın izni olmadan Basra Körfezi'ne girmesine izin verilmeyeceğini ifade eden Azizi, yasanın İran'ın Hürmüz Boğazı üzerindeki kontrol ve yetkisini güçlendirmeyi amaçladığını dile getirdi. İran Meclisi Ulusal Güvenlik ve Dış Politika Komisyonu Sözcüsü Hasan Kaşkavi, 9 Ağustos'taki açıklamasında, Hürmüz Boğazı ve Basra Körfezi'nin güvenliği ve sürdürülebilir kalkınmasının sağlanmasına yönelik kanun taslağının ilgili komisyon tarafından kabul edildiğini duyurmuştu. ABD'DEN HÜRMÜZ'DE GEMİYE MÜDAHALE CENTCOM'un sosyal medya platformundaki hesabından yapılan açıklamada, "Bugün erken saatlerde CENTCOM güçleri, Panama bayraklı M/V Vela Nova adlı kargo gemisinin Umman Körfezi'nden geçmeye ve İran'a yönelik ABD ablukasını ihlal ederek bir İran limanına doğru seyretmeye çalışması üzerine geminin dümen tertibatını devre dışı bıraktı." ifadelerine yer verildi. Geminin sivil mürettebatının ABD güçlerinin uyarılarını dikkate almadığı belirtilen açıklamada, ABD donanmasına ait MH-60 tipi bir helikopterin, söz konusu geminin makine dairesine iki Hellfire füzesi fırlattığı kaydedildi. Açıklamanın devamında, "Gemi artık ABD ablukasını ihlal ederek İran'a doğru seyir yapmıyor, abluka halen tam olarak yürürlükte." ifadeleri kullanıldı. Çin'in Tahran Büyükelçisi Zong ise konuşmasında, ülkesinin İran'a yönelik askeri saldırılara karşı olduğunu ifade etti. Zong, Çin'in Batı Asya bölgesinde ve Basra Körfezi ülkeleri arasındaki ilişkilerin güçlendirilmesini her zaman desteklediğini kaydetti.

Russia, Ukraine step up attacks, take 16 lives

MOSCOW: At least 16 people were killed in Ukrainian and Russian strikes on Saturday, in a deadly fifth summer of war as both sides intensify attacks, with diplomacy at a deadlock. Ukrainian drones also targeted a Siberian oil refinery and the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, escalating strikes deep inside Russia — which it says are aimed to weaken Russia’s war effort and force the Kremlin to negotiate. The deaths — in Russian-occupied Ukraine, north-eastern Ukraine and Russian border villages — come as the UN has warned of civilians dying in larger numbers recently in the almost 4.5-year war. US-led talks on ending the fighting are at a deadlock, with Washington focused on the Middle East and Moscow intent on seizing the whole of eastern Ukraine. Russian occupational authorities in southern Ukraine said a Ukrainian strike on an Azov Sea village killed eight people, including two children. Kazakh leader tells Putin war should end Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-installead head of the Russian occupied part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, said Kyiv had struck “tourist camps” in the seaside village of Kyrylivka. Balitsky said the strike also wounded 14 people in Kyrylivka — seized by Russia in the first days of its offensive. Kyiv has not yet commented on the strike. Ukraine has intensified attacks in the Azov Sea in recent weeks, targeting Russian ships there. ‘War should end’ Kazakhstan’s president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told Russia’s Vladimir Putin that fighting in Ukraine should “be stopped”, calling for the conflict to be “frozen”, in a rare face-to-face comment to the Russian leader. “How to get out of this situation? Nobody knows, because there are the positions of both sides. But, on the other hand, there is such a moment and possibility to freeze all this,” Tokayev told Putin at a Russian-Kazakh summit in Siberia’s Omsk, adding: “It is a shame, young people are dying… All this has to be stopped.” Siberian oil refinery hit Kyiv, meanwhile, said a Russian drone strike on its private courier service Nova Poshta in the north-eastern city of Sumy killed three drivers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was a “double-tap” drone strike. Two more people were killed in southern Ukraine, Kyiv said, as Moscow reported two villagers killed in border areas and one more person in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region. Far from the battlefield, Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Siberia’s Tyumen region, more than 1,000 miles east of Moscow, in one of its furthest hits so far. Ukraine’s strikes deep inside Russia have caused fuel shortages and disrupted ordinary life in Russia more than at any point during the 4.5-year war. The governor of the Tyumen region, Alexander Moor, said a Ukrainian drone fell “on the territory” of an oil refinery, causing a fire. Moscow said Ukraine had launched more than 300 drones into Russian territory, including on regions far from the border. Zelensky announced Kyiv had also struck a factory in Kirov — hundreds of kilometres east of Moscow — for the second day in a row, a day after a deadly strike there.
