Around eight million taxpayers pay 65% of total income-tax take - report

(ANSA) - ROME, 24 SET - The approximately eight million Italian taxpayers who declare annual gross incomes of 35,000 euros or more contribute the lion's share, 65%, of the overall IRPEF personal income-tax take, according to a report released on Thursday by the Itinerari Previdenziali research institute. Based on tax returns for 2024, it said around 42.8 million people out of a population of close to 59 million filed tax returns in 2024 but only 34.1 million of them actually paid any income tax. It said 47% of taxpayers, some 20.2 million individuals, with declared gross salaries of up to 20,000 euros, contribute just 5% of the overall income-tax take. The tax-take percentage rises to around 21.33% when one includes people on incomes of up to 29,000 euros. People earning between 29,000 and 35.000 euros a year contribute around 11.4% of the total.
