University of Palermo Mission to Senegal for a Project on the Causes of Conflict in Africa

(ANSA) - ROMA, 24 SET - The Italian Ambassador to Senegal, Michele Tommasi, received Prof. Edoardo Baldaro and researcher Daniela Musina from the University of Palermo, who were on a mission in Dakar as part of the Reswa project—“Dynamics of Conflict and Instability in the West African Regional Security Complex.” The work of the two scholars, supported by the Ministry of Universities and Research, focuses on the causes and dynamics of insecurity and conflict in West Africa and the Sahel, with particular attention to the interactions between international competition, transformations in political systems, and insurgent movements, as well as their impact on regional balances of power. Baldaro, a professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Palermo, has been studying the Sahel, conflicts, and security issues for several years. The mission to Senegal is part of Reswa’s fieldwork and aims, among other things, to develop collaborations with local scholars and stakeholders engaged in these issues. The meeting also provided an opportunity to highlight the value of academic cooperation and scientific diplomacy—important tools not only for gaining a deeper understanding of the political and security transformations underway in the region, but also for strengthening ties between the research community and Italian and Senegalese institutions.
