Italian agriculture drives Europe, generating 16.9% of EU agricultural value added

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 25 - Italy has confirmed its position as the European leader in agricultural value added, accounting for 16.9% of the EU total in 2025, ahead of Spain, France and Germany. This is according to a report on the agri-food economy by the Research and Innovation Department of BPER Banca, which examines the state of health of Italy's agri-food supply chain. According to the study, the sector generates €89 billion in value added (€46.6 billion from agriculture, forestry and fishing; €42.3 billion from the food industry). Italy also recorded a new export record, exceeding €72 billion (+5%), although imports grew even more sharply (+10.5%), resulting in a deterioration in the trade balance. Geopolitical tensions — including the crisis in the Middle East, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and US macroeconomic data — are having a significant impact on agricultural costs related to energy, fuel and fertilisers in the first months of 2026. Meanwhile, the "Agriculture 4.0" market grew by 9% last year, reaching €2.5 billion, driven by increased investment in technology and innovation, according to the BPER Research Department report. At regional level, in 2025 agriculture, forestry and fishing in the Veneto region generated €4.6 billion in agricultural value added, equal to 9.9% of the national total and up 3.2% in real terms compared with 2024, according to the report on the agri-food economy by BPER Banca's Research and Innovation Department (Banca Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna). Veneto ranks second only to Lombardy. According to Research Department head Eliana Chessa, this year "the indicators requiring the closest monitoring are the costs of materials and energy, which have already accelerated significantly in the first months of the year, with potential effects on yields that will only become apparent in the coming harvests". #IMCAP Co-funded by the European Union.
