Hansen to farmers: 'Difficult summer amid heat and drought, EU stands by you'

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 25 - "This summer is particularly difficult for farmers in the European Union, and especially in Italy, with more extreme and frequent heat and drought and increasingly frequent wildfires in several regions. I know how much these events are putting farmers to the test, and in these difficult times, the European Commission stands by them." This was the message from EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen, in a statement paying "tribute to farmers who continue to work in these difficult conditions, despite the uncertainty affecting their crops and production". The Luxembourgish politician recalled that the Common Agricultural Policy "is already mobilising billions of euros to support farmers in adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. We will continue these efforts," he assured. He also pointed out that when extreme weather conditions, such as drought, "affect their crops or livestock", Member States "can recognise such situations as cases of force majeure", allowing farmers to receive the CAP payments to which they are entitled even when they are unable to meet certain requirements due to exceptional circumstances.
