Israeli fire kills four in Gaza, Syrian man

CAIRO/JAKARTA: Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four people in the Gaza Strip in separate incidents on Thursday, health officials in the enclave said. In Gaza City, a strike on a car killed at least one person, medics said. They earlier said there had been two deaths. A crowd gathered around the burning wreckage, as orange-vested emergency crews sprayed it with water, photos from the scene showed. Other strikes killed a Palestinian man on a bike in the southern city of Khan Yunis and a man near Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, and gunfire killed a woman near the Jabalia refugee camp, in the north, the medics added. Israel’s military said it had struck Hamas in Khan Yunis, Nuseirat and Gaza City, but that it was not aware of the reported incident in Jabalia. Israel has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks. Francesca Albanese urges Indonesia to reconsider involvement in Trump’s Gaza board Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal. Last year’s US-brokered ceasefire calls for eventual reconstruction of the territory. But little progress has been made as negotiators have failed to agree terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops. Israeli airstrikes have continued. At least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire, according to the territory’s health officials, while Israel says four soldiers have been killed. Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza. Syrian man killed Separately, a Syrian man with a disability was killed on Thursday by Israeli fire during an incursion in the country’s south where Israel has stepped up operations. The Israeli military has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria and conducted frequent incursions into its territory since new authorities toppled longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. “A civilian with a disability was killed on Thursday by fire from the Israeli occupation forces during their incursion into the village of Jamla” in Daraa province, Syrian state news agency SANA reported. Israeli forces entered a neighbourhood and placed snipers on the rooftops after bombing the area late on Wednesday, the report said. Syria condemned “in the strongest terms the Israeli occupation forces’ crime”, a foreign ministry statement said, adding that “targeting civilians is a grave violation” of international law. Trump’s Gaza board Indonesia should reconsider its involvement in US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan because it is being shaped by Israel and the US and lacks a Palestinian voice, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories said on Thursday. Trump announced in January that he was setting up a “Board of Peace” to address global conflicts typically handled by the UN. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has said it would be a member of the new body and it has also pledged troops to be deployed to Gaza as part of an international stabilisation force. Francesca Albanese, a human rights lawyer and UN special rapporteur known for her criticism of Israel, said in an interview in Jakarta that Indonesia has historically supported the Palestinian cause but joining the board was dangerous. Indonesia’s foreign ministry said on Thursday that its Board of Peace discussions remained on hold, reiterating its earlier position. A number of Western capitals have criticised Albanese, while the US has imposed sanctions on her. “I understand [Indonesia’s] good intentions. I still think that it’s very dangerous, because it risks to normalise a very abnormal mechanism,” she said. Albanese said that, legally, Israel could not have a role in determining the future of Palestinians. Rights experts have criticised Trump’s board for not including a Palestinian representative, though it is meant to supervise the temporary governance of a Palestinian territory. A board official rejected the suggestion that the Palestinians had been excluded, however, saying: “Palestinian leadership and ownership remain central to the process.” The official said Gaza’s civilian administration and recovery efforts are led by the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, which is made up of Palestinian professionals from Gaza and led by former Palestinian Authority official Ali Shaath.
