Embassy in Ukraine Visits the Ruins of the Museum Dedicated to Chernobyl

(ANSA) - ROMA, 25 GIU - The Italian Embassy in Kyiv took part in a site visit organized by the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior to the ruins of the “Chernobyl” Historical Museum. The museum, located in the heart of the densely populated Podil neighborhood, was founded to preserve the memory of the 1986 nuclear disaster and had recently been renovated to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragedy. Less than a month after its reopening on May 24, the museum was destroyed by Russian missiles fired at the Ukrainian capital. The building is now unusable, while what remains of the 23,000 items in the exhibition has been moved to another location. “It is chilling to witness such relentless attacks against a cultural center that played an important educational role,” commented Ambassador Carlo Formosa. “That night, the Kremlin’s attacks caused two deaths and more than 50 injuries in the capital alone, and the bombings continued in the weeks that followed. Added to the suffering inflicted on Ukrainians today is a shameful affront to the memory of the victims and of all those who suffered from the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster,” he added.
