LAKKI MARWAT: Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed and several others were injured in a suicide blast in the Kherukhel Pacca area of Lakki Marwat district on Friday. Police and Rescue 1112 officials said that the blast occurred near a mosque in the remote rural area. “The emergency rescue service dispatched medical teams along with ambulances to the blast site soon after learning about the incident,” a rescue official told Dawn. He identified the deceased as Asma Bibi, 8, and Asad Ali, 25, and said that the bodies and the injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital. Three policemen among four martyred in parts of KP A police official said armed villagers killed the suicide bomber before he could reach the mosque to target worshippers with his explosive-laden motorcycle. He added that the device exploded, injuring at least five people, including minors. The official also confirmed the death of two people, including a minor girl, in the incident. A large number of villagers were present in the mosque to offer Jumma prayers at the time of explosion. A large contingent of law-enforcement personnel later reached the area and launched a search for terrorists. Meanwhile, three police personnel among four people were martyred and one other got injuries in targeted killings and IED blasts in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday. In Bannu district, two police constables were martyred in separate incidents of targeted killings on Friday. In the morning, constable Mishkat Amir was returning home after attending a gathering at Hamza Tablighi mosque when gunmen attacked him near Azad Mandi. He died from critical injuries on the spot. On Thursday night, constable Mohammad Roshan, who belonged to Wazir sub-division police, was targeted by armed men outside his residence in Saidgi Bakakhel area. According to police, Roshan was performing duties at North Waziristan IDP Camp in Bakakhel and had returned home after completing his duties. The attackers opened fire on him while he was outside his house, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to the injuries in the hospital. Police officials said both incidents were acts of targeted killing and terrorism. Separate funeral prayers for the two martyred constables were offered at the police lines, Bannu. Police personnel, local elders and residents condemned the attacks and demanded immediate arrest of perpetrators and strict punishment for those involved. In Bajaur tribal district, a man was killed in an improvised explosive device blast in remote Barang tehsil on Friday. According to police and residents, the explosion occurred near a seminary run by cleric Maulana Ibrahim in the Asil Targaoo area shortly after Friday prayers. The IED, planted on a pathway near the seminary, went off when a man, Shazada Mian, was passing through the area, leaving him critically injured, said Mansoor Khan, spokesperson for district police. He said that the residents shifted 56-year-old injured Shahzada Mian, a resident of Asil Targaoo village, to a nearby hospital but he died. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast. In Lakki Marwat, policeman was injured when an armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicle was targeted with a motorcycle-borne IED in Ghaznikhel area on Friday. A police official said that terrorists had parked the motorcycle with an IED fitted to it to target a police patrol team. He said that a police official received minor injuries in the attack, while other members of the team remained unhurt. A large police contingent later reached the venue on the special instructions of DPO Nazir Khan and launched a search for terrorists in the area. He said that police experts also collected evidence from the attack and initiated an investigation. The DPO said that terrorists wanted to spread panic and fear in the area by targeting public places and law-enforcement personnel. He said the police would continue operations until the last terrorist was eliminated. In Karak district, a police official embraced martyrdom in a targeted attack by terrorists on Thursday night, police said on Friday. A police official said that constable Naseerullah lost his life when armed motorcyclists attacked him near Muhabatkhel Algada area. He said that the deceased was posted to the District Special Branch of the police department. The official said that body of the martyred policeman was taken to police lines after completing medico-legal formalities where DPO Imran Khan, Assistant Commissioner Shamim Khan, other police and district administration officers, area elders, relatives and people from different walks of life attended his funeral prayers. Ukraine on Thursday launched its largest drone attack on Moscow in years, sparking fires, hitting a major oil refinery and forcing evacuations at the country’s largest airport. Russia vowed to retaliate for the attack as AFP reporters saw dramatic scenes of black smoke billowing over the capital’s southern skyline and drops of black rain mixed with soot falling from the sky. KYIV: Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on St Petersburg and its surrounding oil infrastructure overnight Saturday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Russian claims that Moscow had seized the strategically important eastern city of Kostiantynivka as a “lie”. The drone strikes on Russia’s second-largest city and the surrounding Lenin­grad region are part of Kyiv’s ongoing ca­­mpaign to deepen fuel shortages in Russia. St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said the city of 6 million was subjected to a “large-scale” attack that struck an oil terminal. He reported no casualties and said the aftermath of the attack had been dealt with. Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said a drone struck the area of Vysotsk port, about 170 kilometres nor­thwest of St Petersburg on the Baltic Sea. Zelensky calls Russian claim of capturing Kostiantynivka a ‘lie’ The port handles oil, grain, coal and liquefied natural gas. Drozdenko noted that 72 drones were shot down over the region, causing minor damage in several settlements. “Ukraine’s defence forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia’s war and also hit Kronstadt, an important military target more than 850km from Ukraine’s state border,” Zelensky said in a post on Telegram. There was no Russian confirmation of a strike on Kronstadt, a major naval base near St Petersburg. South of St Petersburg, the governor of Pskov region said more than 30 drones had been shot down overnight. He reported minor damage and injuries, including at a factory in the town of Velikiye Luki. Elsewhere, the governor of Russia’s Bryansk region, as well as the Russian-installed governor of Crimea, said that drone strikes had killed one person in each region, with several more wounded. In the Leningrad region town of Gatchina on Friday, long queues were seen at fuel stations, with some outlets entirely out of fuel. Meanwhile, Zelensky and the General Staff firmly rejected Russian military claims made to President Vladimir Putin on Friday that Moscow’s forces had taken control of Kostiantynivka. “Of course, that is not true. It is just another Russian lie, an attempt to generate some kind of a news story,” Zelensky said on X. “If Kostiantynivka were under Russian control, then perhaps Putin would have no problem meeting me there to find a diplomatic way to finally end this war.” The General Staff stated that Ukrain­ian military units continue to conduct defensive operations within the town. Kostiantynivka is the southernmost of four key settlements forming a defensive “fortress belt” in the heavily industrialised Donetsk region. Analysts say capturing it would give Russian forces a crucial foothold. Meanwhile, Russia continued its own bombardments. But a recent spate of deadly attacks using dozens of ultra-fast ballistic missiles has put Ukraine’s air-defence system under strain. Russia launched more than 120 drones and 12 missiles during the night, half of them ballistic, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on X. “Civilian infrastructure was hit even before the air raid alert was issued,” he added. US urged to swiftly follow through on its pledge to allow Kyiv to make Patriot air defence systems He posted videos of emergency teams working in the smoke and rubble of ruined buildings. He urged the United States to swiftly follow through on its pledge to license Ukraine to make Patriot air-defence systems. US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would allow Ukraine to manufacture the missiles. Zelensky said on Thursday that technical details still needed to be agreed. Saturday’s strike on Kyiv marked the second time in less than a week that missiles hit before an air alert was issued. Sergiy Sternenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s defence minister, said that impacts before the sirens could indicate Russia had used S-400 anti-aircraft missiles to carry out strikes on the ground. “During ground attacks, these missiles are more difficult to detect by radar,” he wrote on Telegram. “There is no military logic to such attacks. It is simply terrorism for the sake of terrorism.” Russia, which denies targeting civilians, said it had struck “military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and seaport infrastructure in Odesa”. On Friday, Ukrainian drones hit oil refineries in southern Russia, as Kyiv targeted its foe’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine, which is critically low on munitions for its Patriot air defence systems, has been largely unable to down ballistic missiles, which travel at several times the speed of sound, over the past month. It has pleaded with allies for greater supplies of those munitions and has also pushed Europe to work with Kyiv on its own anti-ballistic air defence system. So far this month, strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region have killed more than 60 people. Kyiv, in turn, has been pressuring Russia’s military logistics in occupied southern Ukraine, seeking to deprive Russian forces of fuel and munitions by conducting strikes on trucks and vessels deep behind the front lines. Ukraine’s drone forces chief Robert Brovdi said his units had struck 21 fuel tanker vessels in the Sea of Azov overnight, as well as seven other cargo and support ships, bringing the total number of vessels struck this week to 76. Wildberries warehouses in Moscow and Tambov oblasts caught fire after Ukrainian drone strikes, and the evacuation of employees was marred by violations, according to eyewitness accounts cited by Post- magazine and the independent investigative outlet iStories. In some sections, managers kept workers inside the burning buildings; employees had to open automatic gates by hand, evacuate chaotically through narrow doorways, and flee the warehouse grounds through a forest. Wildberries’ press service denies the allegations. Seven workers were killed and 25 injured in the attack on the Kotovsk warehouse; in Elektrostal, one person was killed and 61 were injured.

Humanitarian issues were also discussed. Yevgeny Balitsky began his report by describing the developments in Energodar, the city of nuclear power workers. As the Governor noted, having failed to achieve success on the battlefield, the enemy has resorted to intimidating the civilian population by attacking infrastructure, including pharmacies and other critical facilities. According to the Governor’s assessment, the situation is difficult but manageable. While no universal solution currently exists anywhere in the world for countering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the Russian Armed Forces are taking every possible measure to enhance drone defence. The Russian National Guard, the regional administration, and all security agencies fully understand the challenges facing Energodar. Yevgeny Balitsky also expressed his condolences over the recent death of chief engineer of the Zaporozhye NPP Alexander Yakovlev, noting that he had already informed Vladimir Putin of the tragedy. Next, the Governor reported to the President that all energy facilities are under control. In particular, on Vladimir Putin’s instructions, the R-280 Novorossiya highway, which serves as a key supply route to Crimea, has been placed under special protection and is now fully secured by the Russian military. To their credit, the Governor noted, the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone attacks has declined significantly. He further noted that the Russian Armed Forces are continuously improving their capabilities, introducing new systems and methods. Yevgeny Balitsky expressed confidence that all objectives set for the Zaporozhye Region, as well as the goals of the special military operation, will be achieved. Vladimir Putin then turned to humanitarian issues, inquiring about the Union Project. The Governor explained that it is a transport infrastructure initiative being implemented in preparation for the 200th anniversary of Berdyansk, demonstrating that peaceful civilian life continues as the city prepares to celebrate its anniversary next year. Under the Union Project, the heads of major Russian cities will assist Berdyansk in building a network of modern bus stops. The plan calls for the construction of 90 such stops, each designed in the distinctive architectural style of a different Russian region, highlighting the country’s cultural diversity. The Governor asked the President to support the Union Project. Vladimir Putin replied that he would be pleased to do so, describing the initiative as genuinely interesting.

She devoted part of her report to support of the participants in the special military operation and their families, adding that she would like to show returning veterans the renewed country they are fighting to defend. In terms of economic indicators, the growth has been substantial. The Governor highlighted education as a key priority in the region’s human capital development. The pace of major school renovations has doubled, three educational facilities are being built with the involvement of the Ministry of Education, teachers’ salaries have been tripled, and 149 people have returned to work in the education sector. The number of targeted higher-education contracts, which require graduates to return to work in the region, has increased more than tenfold this year.

KYIV: Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens more in Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, authorities said on Wednesday. Kyiv was unable to shoot down any of the missiles launched by Russia, whose intensifying attacks have prompted Kyiv to plead for more US-made Patriot interceptors. Russia has significantly upped its attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, typically firing salvos of hard-to-intercept ballistic missiles in short blitzes that rock buildings and send booms echoing across the city. “Ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. A cloud of smoke hovered over the capital at sunrise, journalists saw, after the attacks sparked fires in several locations in the region. Over 40 people were wounded in the capital and its surrounding areas, local authorities said. Zelensky says ballistic interceptors ‘could have saved lives’ Journalists heard explosions in Kyiv after midnight (2100 GMT Tuesday), following Ukrainian air force warnings of incoming ballistic missiles. One journalist reported seeing dark smoke and the acrid smell of burning lingering in the air hours later. ‘We were lucky today’ “The night was so terrifying, so hard,” Kyiv resident Natalia Reutska said in the morning after the attack. “We’ve gotten used to waking up thinking, ‘we were lucky today,’ and that’s very scary,” she added. Ukraine did shoot down 98 of the 115 drones fired by Russia overnight, the air force said. But it was unable to shoot down any of the missiles, preliminary statistics from the air force showed. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen slammed “horrible atrocities” while French President Emmanuel Macron said France would “not give into intimidation” and called to increase sanctions on Russia. Kyiv can intercept the vast majority of drones, but still relies on supplies from allies to counter missiles. Zelensky said the number of air defence missiles supplied from allies had dropped threefold compared with 2025. He has repeatedly warned about critical air defence shortages, as Moscow fired a record number of missiles at Ukraine in July, an analysis of Ukrainian air force data published on Saturday showed. In Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, a key target for the Kremlin, local authorities on Wednesday ordered hundreds of families with children to leave the major Ukrainian-held city of Kramatorsk. “This is a difficult but necessary decision.
