LAKKI MARWAT: Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed and several others were injured in a suicide blast in the Kherukhel Pacca area of Lakki Marwat district on Friday. Police and Rescue 1112 officials said that the blast occurred near a mosque in the remote rural area. “The emergency rescue service dispatched medical teams along with ambulances to the blast site soon after learning about the incident,” a rescue official told Dawn. He identified the deceased as Asma Bibi, 8, and Asad Ali, 25, and said that the bodies and the injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital. Three policemen among four martyred in parts of KP A police official said armed villagers killed the suicide bomber before he could reach the mosque to target worshippers with his explosive-laden motorcycle. He added that the device exploded, injuring at least five people, including minors. The official also confirmed the death of two people, including a minor girl, in the incident. A large number of villagers were present in the mosque to offer Jumma prayers at the time of explosion. A large contingent of law-enforcement personnel later reached the area and launched a search for terrorists. Meanwhile, three police personnel among four people were martyred and one other got injuries in targeted killings and IED blasts in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday. In Bannu district, two police constables were martyred in separate incidents of targeted killings on Friday. In the morning, constable Mishkat Amir was returning home after attending a gathering at Hamza Tablighi mosque when gunmen attacked him near Azad Mandi. He died from critical injuries on the spot. On Thursday night, constable Mohammad Roshan, who belonged to Wazir sub-division police, was targeted by armed men outside his residence in Saidgi Bakakhel area. According to police, Roshan was performing duties at North Waziristan IDP Camp in Bakakhel and had returned home after completing his duties. The attackers opened fire on him while he was outside his house, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to the injuries in the hospital. Police officials said both incidents were acts of targeted killing and terrorism. Separate funeral prayers for the two martyred constables were offered at the police lines, Bannu. Police personnel, local elders and residents condemned the attacks and demanded immediate arrest of perpetrators and strict punishment for those involved. In Bajaur tribal district, a man was killed in an improvised explosive device blast in remote Barang tehsil on Friday. According to police and residents, the explosion occurred near a seminary run by cleric Maulana Ibrahim in the Asil Targaoo area shortly after Friday prayers. The IED, planted on a pathway near the seminary, went off when a man, Shazada Mian, was passing through the area, leaving him critically injured, said Mansoor Khan, spokesperson for district police. He said that the residents shifted 56-year-old injured Shahzada Mian, a resident of Asil Targaoo village, to a nearby hospital but he died. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast. In Lakki Marwat, policeman was injured when an armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicle was targeted with a motorcycle-borne IED in Ghaznikhel area on Friday. A police official said that terrorists had parked the motorcycle with an IED fitted to it to target a police patrol team. He said that a police official received minor injuries in the attack, while other members of the team remained unhurt. A large police contingent later reached the venue on the special instructions of DPO Nazir Khan and launched a search for terrorists in the area. He said that police experts also collected evidence from the attack and initiated an investigation. The DPO said that terrorists wanted to spread panic and fear in the area by targeting public places and law-enforcement personnel. He said the police would continue operations until the last terrorist was eliminated. In Karak district, a police official embraced martyrdom in a targeted attack by terrorists on Thursday night, police said on Friday. A police official said that constable Naseerullah lost his life when armed motorcyclists attacked him near Muhabatkhel Algada area. He said that the deceased was posted to the District Special Branch of the police department. The official said that body of the martyred policeman was taken to police lines after completing medico-legal formalities where DPO Imran Khan, Assistant Commissioner Shamim Khan, other police and district administration officers, area elders, relatives and people from different walks of life attended his funeral prayers. Russia vowed to retaliate for the attack as AFP reporters saw dramatic scenes of black smoke billowing over the capital’s southern skyline and drops of black rain mixed with soot falling from the sky. KYIV: Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on St Petersburg and its surrounding oil infrastructure overnight Saturday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Russian claims that Moscow had seized the strategically important eastern city of Kostiantynivka as a “lie”. The drone strikes on Russia’s second-largest city and the surrounding Lenin­grad region are part of Kyiv’s ongoing ca­­mpaign to deepen fuel shortages in Russia. St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said the city of 6 million was subjected to a “large-scale” attack that struck an oil terminal. He reported no casualties and said the aftermath of the attack had been dealt with. Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko said a drone struck the area of Vysotsk port, about 170 kilometres nor­thwest of St Petersburg on the Baltic Sea. Zelensky calls Russian claim of capturing Kostiantynivka a ‘lie’ The port handles oil, grain, coal and liquefied natural gas. Drozdenko noted that 72 drones were shot down over the region, causing minor damage in several settlements. “Ukraine’s defence forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia’s war and also hit Kronstadt, an important military target more than 850km from Ukraine’s state border,” Zelensky said in a post on Telegram. There was no Russian confirmation of a strike on Kronstadt, a major naval base near St Petersburg. South of St Petersburg, the governor of Pskov region said more than 30 drones had been shot down overnight. He reported minor damage and injuries, including at a factory in the town of Velikiye Luki. Elsewhere, the governor of Russia’s Bryansk region, as well as the Russian-installed governor of Crimea, said that drone strikes had killed one person in each region, with several more wounded. In the Leningrad region town of Gatchina on Friday, long queues were seen at fuel stations, with some outlets entirely out of fuel. Meanwhile, Zelensky and the General Staff firmly rejected Russian military claims made to President Vladimir Putin on Friday that Moscow’s forces had taken control of Kostiantynivka. “Of course, that is not true. It is just another Russian lie, an attempt to generate some kind of a news story,” Zelensky said on X. “If Kostiantynivka were under Russian control, then perhaps Putin would have no problem meeting me there to find a diplomatic way to finally end this war.” The General Staff stated that Ukrain­ian military units continue to conduct defensive operations within the town. Kostiantynivka is the southernmost of four key settlements forming a defensive “fortress belt” in the heavily industrialised Donetsk region. Analysts say capturing it would give Russian forces a crucial foothold. Meanwhile, Russia continued its own bombardments. Journalists in Kyiv heard two series of explosions in the early hours, with an air alert siren sounding minutes after the first blast. Moscow has been firing missiles and drones at Kyiv almost daily since launching its invasion in February 2022. But a recent spate of deadly attacks using dozens of ultra-fast ballistic missiles has put Ukraine’s air-defence system under strain. Russia launched more than 120 drones and 12 missiles during the night, half of them ballistic, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on X. “Civilian infrastructure was hit even before the air raid alert was issued,” he added. US urged to swiftly follow through on its pledge to allow Kyiv to make Patriot air defence systems He posted videos of emergency teams working in the smoke and rubble of ruined buildings. Apartment buildings, offices and a theological school were damaged in Kyiv, while recovery efforts were under way in other regions, he added. Air defence call Zelensky said air defences “managed to shoot down most of the targets — but not the ballistic ones”. He repeated his plea for allies to send more military aid to help it fight off the Russian invasion, now well into its fifth year. He urged the United States to swiftly follow through on its pledge to license Ukraine to make Patriot air-defence systems. US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would allow Ukraine to manufacture the missiles. Zelensky said on Thursday that technical details still needed to be agreed. Saturday’s strike on Kyiv marked the second time in less than a week that missiles hit before an air alert was issued. Sergiy Sternenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s defence minister, said that impacts before the sirens could indicate Russia had used S-400 anti-aircraft missiles to carry out strikes on the ground. “During ground attacks, these missiles are more difficult to detect by radar,” he wrote on Telegram. “There is no military logic to such attacks. It is simply terrorism for the sake of terrorism.” Russia, which denies targeting civilians, said it had struck “military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and seaport infrastructure in Odesa”. On Friday, Ukrainian drones hit oil refineries in southern Russia, as Kyiv targeted its foe’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine, which is critically low on munitions for its Patriot air defence systems, has been largely unable to down ballistic missiles, which travel at several times the speed of sound, over the past month. It has pleaded with allies for greater supplies of those munitions and has also pushed Europe to work with Kyiv on its own anti-ballistic air defence system. US President Donald Trump said this week that Ukraine will be granted a licence to produce its own Patriot interceptor missiles. After Saturday’s attack, Zelensky called for those projects to move “as swiftly as possible”. Russia has step­p­ed up attacks on the capital in rec­ent weeks. So far this month, strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region have killed more than 60 people. Kyiv, in turn, has been pressuring Russia’s military logistics in occupied southern Ukraine, seeking to deprive Russian forces of fuel and munitions by conducting strikes on trucks and vessels deep behind the front lines. Ukraine’s drone forces chief Robert Brovdi said his units had struck 21 fuel tanker vessels in the Sea of Azov overnight, as well as seven other cargo and support ships, bringing the total number of vessels struck this week to 76. Zelensky has said the aim of the drone strike campaign is to bring Russia to the negotiating table, although Russia’s Vladimir Putin has not yet publicly shown any willingness to soften his position.
