Four more workplace deaths in Italy

(ANSA) - ROME, 04 NOV - Wednesday saw four more workplace deaths in Italy, a 61-year-old Albanian company owner who was crushed to death by a gate near Lecce, a young non-EU migrant worker who fell off a ladder in a factory near Benevento, a 34-year-old worker who had a heart attack at the Fincantieri shipyards at Marghera, and a 54-year-old worker who was hit by a car while working in a manhole near Piacenza. In the first incident, Rushani Bashkim, born in Durrës (Albania) and a resident of Casarano, the owner of a building firm, lost his life. While working at a private residence, he was crushed when a sliding gate fell on him. Emergency rescue efforts proved unsuccessful. In the second incident, at in San Leucio del Sannio, in the province of Benevento, at a company that processes aggregates and crushes stone, the migrant victim fell from a ladder on the company's premises. In the third case, a 34-year-old worker had a heart attack and died while working inside a ship at the Fincantieri shipyard at Marghera near Venice. In the fourth case, the 54-year-old man died in the town of San Nicolò, in the province of Piacenza. The man, an employee of Iren, was inside a utility manhole in the street—located in front of a residential entrance—to read water meters when he was struck by a car that was maneuvering to enter a garage area. The incidents followed two worker deaths on Tuesday, a 57-year-old worker of foreign extraction who was crushed to death by a press at a cardboard factory at Fabriano in Marche, and a worker hit by a platform transporting a crane on Lake Garda which capsized. Workplace deaths are a big problem in Italy. Workplace accident insurance agency INAIL said in its annual report recently that Italy registered 1,189 work-related deaths in 2025. Although this was 37 fewer than in 2024, a drop of 3.02%, it still means that Italy is averaging over three work-related deaths every day. (ANSA). Read article...
