Ranucci sues Rai to get job back at helm of 'Report'

(ANSA) - ROME, 15 SET - Lawyers representing Sigfrido Ranucci on Tuesday presented an urgent appeal to a Rome labour court against Rai's decision to remove him from investigative journalism programme Report. The State broadcaster said last month that it was replacing Ranucci as the host of the programme due to his friendship with a controversial businessman who organized a bomb attack on the journalist's home last year. Ranucci has said he was the victim of a character assassination by the conservative press that was almost unprecedented in the world due to his relationship with businessman Valter Lavitola, a restaurateur who was once convicted of extorting late former premier Silvio Berlusconi over alleged escorts. Government politicians and conservative journalists insistently called for Rai to suspend Ranucci from Report, a hard-hitting programme whose exposés have often irked the government, over his allegedly murky friendship with Lavitola, who is in jail after confessing to last October's bombing and saying he did it to boost his friend's security detail. Prosecutors have said the bombing on Ranucci's home outside Rome in October was meant to further boost Ranucci's popularity in light of a possible entry into politics from which Lavitola allegedly also hoped to benefit. They said they do not suspect Ranucci of involvement in the plan. Ranucci's lawyers said the appeal against the journalist's removal must be dealt with urgently because the new season of Report is due to start on November 8 and Rai has said he must give an answer about three alternative roles it has offered him by September 27. Rai accuses Ranucci of breaching its internal regulations

(ANSA) - ROME, 16 SET - Rai has sent Sigfrido Ranucci a letter accusing the investigative journalist, who is fighting the State broadcaster's decision to remove him from the helm of its 'Report' programme, of breaching its internal regulations on the basis of the findings of its ethical committee, sources said on Wednesday. Ranucci has five days to respond the letter, which could lead to the opening of disciplinary proceedings and punishments including a warning, a suspension or even dismissal. The State broadcaster said last month that it was replacing Ranucci as the host of Report due to his friendship with Valter Lavitola, a controversial businessman who organized a bomb attack on the journalist's home last year. Prosecutors have said the bombing on Ranucci's home outside Rome in October was meant to further boost Ranucci's popularity in light of a possible entry into politics from which Lavitola allegedly also hoped to benefit. They said they do not suspect Ranucci of involvement in the plan. Lavitola said he organized the bombing to get the authorities to boost his friend's security detail. Ranucci's lawyers said the appeal against the journalist's removal must be dealt with urgently because the new season of Report is due to start on November 8 and Rai has said he must give an answer about three alternative roles it has offered him by September 27. The alleged breaches of Rai's internal rules include his criticism of the broadcaster's management and of the new presenters of Report. The charges are separate from an internal audit into possible interference by Lavitola in Report's investigations. (ANSA). Read article...
