    (ANSA) - NEW YORK, 04 SET - On September 2 and 3, the Italian Embassy in Washington hosted the bilateral meeting between Italy and the United States, aimed at strengthening and renewing the long-standing scientific cooperation between the two countries and taking stock of joint initiatives in the fields of fundamental physics and emerging technologies. The two-day meeting, held annually, brought together a delegation from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics and U.S. delegations from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), the main federal agencies that fund scientific research in the United States. The discussions addressed numerous topics of interest to the physics community, starting with large accelerators for particle physics research. In particular, the discussions delved into ongoing activities at CERN and potential future collaborations within the Future Circular Collider project, as well as the progress of the Electron-Ion Collider—the future electron-ion collider currently under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory—for the study of the properties of nuclear matter. Ample attention was also given to neutrino physics, with an update on the DUNE project in the United States and on the future LEGEND experiment for the search for neutrino-less double beta decay, which will be hosted at the INFN’s Gran Sasso National Laboratories. Research in the field of gravitational waves was also discussed, ranging from the current collaborations between the Virgo and LIGO teams to future prospects related to the next generation of observatories, the Einstein Telescope and the Cosmic Explorer. Discussions also focused on the direct search for dark matter, with particular reference to the DarkSide and XENON experiments, housed at the INFN’s Gran Sasso National Laboratories. Cooperation between Italy and the United States also extends to emerging technologies: advanced computing, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and quantum technologies. During the meeting, the development of quantum computing was discussed, with an update on the project coordinated by Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center to build a future quantum computer, for which the INFN was the first international partner outside the United States. “Scientific cooperation between Italy and the United States stems from a solid relationship built over time between our research communities,” emphasized Marco Peronaci, Italy’s ambassador to the United States. “In a rapidly evolving field, pooling expertise, infrastructure, and technological capabilities means fostering innovation and creating new opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.” “The meeting in Washington was an important opportunity to renew scientific collaboration between Italy and the United States,” stated Antonio Zoccoli, president of the INFN. “There are numerous strategic projects in which our scientific communities are working side by side: from particle physics to neutrino research, from gravitational waves to dark matter, and on to quantum technologies and the new frontiers of computing.
