Italy to receive up to €45 million from CAP reserve to offset fertiliser price surge

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 15 - Italy is expected to receive more than €45 million from the reinforced CAP agricultural crisis reserve proposed by the European Commission to support farmers facing soaring fertiliser prices. The allocation has been communicated to EU member states through an implementing act in Brussels, two weeks before they vote on the Commission's proposal. With an allocation of €45.6 million, Italy would be the fifth-largest beneficiary of the €540 million reinforced reserve, after France (€107 million), Poland (€66 million), Germany (€60 million) and Spain (€50 million). In June, the Commission proposed increasing the CAP agricultural reserve by €300 million on top of the more than €200 million still available for the current year. The total reserve would therefore rise to €540 million to provide "targeted and exceptional" support to farmers affected by the conflict in the Middle East. Member states will also be allowed to complement the EU contribution with national funding of up to 200%, potentially bringing the overall financial support available to €1.5 billion. The proposal to increase the agricultural reserve must be approved by member states within the Committee for the Common Organisation of Agricultural Markets. According to a Commission spokesperson, the vote is scheduled for 17 July. #IMCAP Co-funded by the European Union.
