At least three Sindh Rangers personnel were martyred on Saturday after terrorists attacked a facility of the paramilitary force in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar locality, said the province’s police chief. Speaking to Dawn, Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said, as per initial information, three terrorists were also killed in the attack on a local headquarters of the rangers. Earlier, law enforcers rushed to the locality on Saturday after heavy firing and an explosion were reported in the locality, according to Dawn News. Special units, including the Rapid Response Force and police commandos, were dispatched to the scene to take control of the situation, the broadcaster said. According to reports, the general area has been cordoned off by police and paramilitary personnel. No information on injuries has been reported; however, rescue personnel have also reached the site of the incident. Rescue 1122 Sindh said it had received reports of an explosion near Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 5 and immediately dispatched teams to the scene from its central command and control centre. According to the spokesperson, Rescue 1122 teams reached the site and were on stand-by. Chief Operating Officer Dr Abid Jalaluddin Sheikh was also dispatched to the incident site on the directives of Chief Minister’s Adviser on Rehabilitation Gyan Chand Essrani and Rescue 1122 (Sindh) Director General Brig (retd) Wajid Sibghatullah. As the attack was launched, the residents of Gulistan-i-Jauhar had reported hearing the sounds of an explosion and gunfire at around 8pm on Thursday. The powerful blast and subsequent heavy gunfire had forced residents and bystanders to scramble for safety. Law enforcement and emergency rescue services had rushed to the scene, while multiple arterial roads leading from Mosamiyat to the Rangers camp were closed to vehicular traffic as a security operation continued late into the night. The military’s media affairs wing said the attack was carried out by the proscribed JuA. The terror outfit was formed by Abdul Wali aka Omar Khalid Khorasani in 2014 after his split from the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but both groups joined hands in 2024. Khorasani was in a car bomb attack in August 2022 in Afghanistan. In January 2025, a dispute between the two surfaced in the media. Although no formal separation occurred, when the TTP announced its appointments for 2025 in February, no significant positions were allocated to the JuA. According to information available on the United Nations Security Council’s website, the JuA is based in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. “Most of JuA commanders and operatives hail from Mohmand Agency … [They were] dispersed after Pakistan’s military operation Zarb-i- Azb. Remnants continue to launch terrorist attacks inside Pakistan,” the website states. For its part, Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban administration in Kabul to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries on Afghan soil that are used for attacks in Pakistan. Officials say those appeals have gone unheeded. Earlier this month, Pakistan also carried out strikes on terrorist hideouts along its border with Afghanistan and killed 26 terrorists. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said at the time that the strikes were carried out in the aftermath of recent terrorist incidents in Pakistan, including an attack on a Federal Constabulary (FC) post in Musa Dara in Peshawar on June 11. Tarar also mentioned “vehicle-borne suicide attacks on a military post in North Waziristan” on June 2, which was foiled, and the May 9 suicide attack on a Bannu post that claimed the lives of 15 police personnel.

40 killed, 8 injured as passenger bus falls into ravine near Balochistan-KP border
QUETTA: Forty people were killed and eight others injured when a Peshawar-bound passenger bus fell into a ravine just as it left the Dhanasar area of Balochistan’s Sherani district and crossed the provincial border into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan on Friday, officials said. The number of casualties was first shared in a statement by the Balochistan chief minister’s aide for media and political affairs, Shahid Rind, who cited initial reports. It was later also confirmed by the KP Rescue 112. Rind’s statement said rescue efforts were initiated soon after the accident on Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti’s directives. “District administrations from both provinces, rescue and other relevant departments are providing assistance to the affected persons,” the statement said late in the morning, while relief and rescue activities were under way. The statement added that the incident would be investigated to bring facts to light. A statement by KP Rescue 1122 said teams from Zhob emergency services and Rescue 1122 reached the site soon after receiving information about the accident and carried out rescue efforts. The eight injured people were taken to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in Zhob while the bodies were initially taken to a nearby rural health centre. The bodies were later shifted to Zhob DHQ, the Rescue 1122 statement said. It added that 48 passengers were aboard the bus when it fell into the ravine. Earlier, Sherani Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wali Khan Kakar confirmed the location and other details of the incident to Dawn, saying that the bus left Quetta with 36 passengers, but more people from another broken-down bus boarded it midway. Condolences Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief and extended condolences to the victims’ families. An X post by the Presidency said he prayed for the swift recovery of the injured and directed the relevant departments to ensure the provision of best possible medical facilities to the injured. “The entire nation shares the grief of the affected families after this tragic incident,” the statement quoted him as saying. Balochistan CM Bugti also expressed grief over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved in a post on X. He said he had directed the relevant departments to expedite rescue efforts, provide the best medical facilities to the injured and ensure all possible assistance for the affected families. “The Balochistan government is standing with the affected families at this difficult time,” he said. Today’s incident comes around two-and-a-half months after a vehicle plunged into a deep ravine in the Nawagai Asbanr area of KP’s Lower Dir area, leaving three women dead and two people injured. Prior to that, a jeep carrying five passengers skidded off a wet, slippery road and plunged into a deep ravine in Upper Chitral in KP on March 31. ISLAMABAD: The PTI on Sunday condemned the deaths of three girls in a suspected quadcopter attack in the Birmal tehsil of Lower South Waziristan and demanded a transparent investigation to determine the facts behind the incident. In a statement, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram expressed profound grief and heartfelt condolences over the tragic incident. He questioned the alarming increase in drone strikes and security incidents in various parts of the country. The PTI leader said the loss of civilian lives was deeply disturbing and called for an impartial investigation to ensure that those responsible for the incident were held accountable. Calls for ‘ucompromising investigation’ into kidnapping of foreign women ‘Kidnapping and sexual assault’ The PTI spokesperson also expressed shock over a high-profile case involving the kidnapping and sexual assault of two foreign women in Lahore. On Thursday, the police booked five suspects over alleged abduction and sexual assault after the two women were rescued. Four of the suspects, including a close relative of a senior political personality, were arrested and later sent on a five-day physical remand. “The serious allegations recorded in the FIR, supported by the statements of the victim women before the court, demand a completely transparent, thorough, independent and uncompromising investigation without any compromise or interference,” he said. Eight injured in Peshawar downpour

Rescue 1122 said in a statement that downpour and strong winds caused roof and wall collapse incidents in Faqir Killay, Pakha Ghulam, Chughalpura, Shah Alam Pul and Yousafabad localities, injuring eight people, who were rushed to the hospital by rescue workers. Meanwhile, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) said a windstorm led to the suspension of electric supply from its several grid stations. It said 200 feeders attached to the city’s 12 grid stations tripped due to the windstorm. The public utility said that power supply from 100 feeders had been restored, while Pesco teams were working to resume supply from 98 others. Roof, wall collapse incidents, power suspension reported in parts of province The rain also inundated the Kohat Road, resulting in prolonged traffic gridlock in the area. Haleem Khan of Kohat Road told Dawn that a large number of vehicles moved at a snail’s pace from Technical College to Banamari Chowk, while those going to the Kohat Road also faced a kilometre-long traffic jam from Banamari Chowk to Ring Road bridge due to accumulation of rainwater. Torrential rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms swept across parts of Wana, the headquarters of Lower South Waziristan tribal district. According to residents, the storm uprooted at least three poles of the power distribution line, bringing live power cables down onto the main road and forcing the suspension of electricity supply to Wana and several surrounding localities. The severe windstorm also caused significant damage to educational infrastructure. A boundary wall stretching several hundred feet at the girls’ hostel of Jamia Darul Uloom Waziristan in Wana collapsed under the force of the storm. The powerful winds affected houses and commercial buildings across the town. Dozens of solar panels installed on rooftops were damaged. In Rustam Bazaar, one of Wana’s main commercial centres, solar panels installed on the roofs of shops and market buildings were blown away. Heavy rainfall also triggered flash flooding in seasonal streams and nullahs across the Wana tehsil. The rising water levels disrupted traffic at several locations where bridges are either inadequate or non-existent. Long queues of vehicles were reported in the Tanai, Kach, Kai road surface and Spin areas, where commuters remained stranded for several hours while waiting for floodwaters to subside. The Met Office said that over the past 24 hours, the provincial capital recorded 10mm of rainfall, while 22mm rain fell in Dir, 16mm in Kakul and 15mm in Pattan. Earlier during the day, Provincial Disaster Management Authority had alerted district administration across the province about weather system that was likely to result into scattered rain, windstorm and thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Kohistan, Kolai-Pallas, Battagram, Torghar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber, Mohmand, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Kurram, Hangu, Orakzai, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, North Waziristan and South Waziristan from July 6 night to 8 with occasional gaps. The advisory stated that due to the weather system, windstorms and lightning may damage standing crops and weak structures like electric poles, billboards and solar panels, during the period. It said that it could also result in landslides in vulnerable areas in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Kohistan and Abbottabad districts on July 7 and 8. The advisory also said that water flow may increase in local streams and Nullahs in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Kohistan and Abbottabad districts on the same days. “Heavy rains may cause localised urban flooding in Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera on July 7 and 8,” it said. Meanwhile, heavy rain accompanied by strong thunderstorms and a windstorm for the second consecutive day injured several people in Bajaur district on Monday. Rescue 1122 and residents said the calamity also toppled the main tower of the local PTCL exchange in Khar, along with electricity poles and trees. They told Dawn that the thunderstorms and windstorms ahead of heavy rain, witnessed for the second consecutive day, left a number of people wounded in different areas of the district due to multiple incidents. Several people injured in today’s severe windstorm were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital Khar said a statement from the deputy commissioner’s office. It said that a team of district administration officials, led by Khar subdivision assistant commissioner Amirullah Khan Wazir, visited the hospital to ensure the provision of the best medical facilities to the injured. They had sustained minor injuries, according to it. The fresh rain, accompanied by a windstorm and thunderstorms, was reported at about 4:30pm, hours after similar weather was witnessed on Sunday evening. It also caused the collapse of the main tower of the PTCL exchange in Khar, suspending landline and DSL internet services in the areas and on its outskirts. Moreover, the disaster damaged several electricity poles and power lines in different areas of the region, including Khar town. Residents said strong thunderstorms also uprooted large trees in multiple areas, including in Khar, and destroyed or damaged solar panels. They said the storm also led to the closure of several link roads in mountainous areas after they were submerged in rainwater. Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 and the district administration urged residents to adopt safety measures during rain and thunderstorms, report emergencies and contact the control room to ensure a timely response. Six killed, four injured as rivals clash in Khairpur
SUKKUR: Six people, including two women, were killed and four others injured on Thursday afternoon during a deadly gun battle between rival groups of the Narejo community in Khairpur district. The clash, sparked by an ongoing matrimonial dispute, erupted between 2pm and 3pm in the riverine area of Faiz Muhammad Bundo, within the jurisdiction of the Kot Mir Muhammad police station in Piryaloi. Local residents said the long-standing dispute quickly escalated into an exchange of fire, leaving six people dead at the scene. The deceased were identified as Fateh Muhammad Narejo and his son Raja Narejo from one faction while Muhammad Eiden Narejo and Sohrab Ali Narejo from the opposing side. Two women, identified as Shahzadi and Rabia, were also killed in the crossfire. Four people were injured in the clash, with several reported to be in a critical condition, prompting fears that the death toll could rise. The violence triggered widespread panic across the area as members of both groups took up armed positions, with intermittent firing continuing for several hours after the initial clash. Earlier, police spokesperson Waqar Soomro initially confirmed five fatalities, noting that authorities were still verifying the casualty figures. He added that Khairpur SSP Ameer Saud Magsi rushed to the scene with a heavy police contingent, backed by armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and heavy machinery, to bring the situation under control. Police moved the bodies to Pir Jo Goth Hospital for post-mortem examinations, while the injured were transported to various hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed that raids are underway at multiple locations to arrest those involved, and an investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident, expressing profound grief over the loss of six lives. The chief minister directed the IGP to submit a detailed report, ordered a transparent investigation, and instructed authorities to take immediate legal action against the perpetrators. Taking serious notice of the reported absence of law enforcement when the violence broke out, the CM questioned why local police failed to reach the scene promptly. Describing the killings as a “highly serious incident”, he directed law enforcement agencies to proceed against those involved without discrimination. He also instructed the administration and police to restore peace, maintain the law and order in the area, and ensure the injured receive the best available medical treatment, while extending his condolences to the bereaved families. When this correspondent attempted to contact Khairpur SSP Ameer Saud Magsi for comment, he failed to answer the calls or respond to WhatsApp messages.
