More Israelis leaving country than arriving: Press review
More Israelis leaving country than arriving: Press review Nadav Rapaport on Wed, 06/03/2026 - 14:22 Meanwhile, a senior army officer is dismissed over sexual misconduct, and a Netanyahu ally accuses him of jeopardising coalition unity Incoming travellers walk with their luggage upon arrival at Israel's central Ben Gurion Airport on 25 June 2025 (Jack Guez/AFP) Off Voluntary emigration from Israel An Israeli parliament-commissioned study has found that more Israelis have left the country than have arrived in recent years. Findings from the study, published by Ynet on Wednesday, show that almost half of those who have left in recent years are young people with higher education degrees. The data also indicate that emigration has increased since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, while fewer Israelis have returned. More than 210,000 Israelis emigrated between 2022 and 2024, a sharp rise compared with 2009–2021, when the annual average stood at around 40,000. Over the same period, the net difference between departures and returns reached 140,000. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); According to the data, 48 percent of emigrants were aged 20 to 44, an age group that comprises 32 percent of the general population. Since 2022, Ynet reported, 33.2 percent of emigrants held a bachelor’s degree, 21.5 percent a master’s degree, and 3.7 percent a PhD. Graduates in fields such as mathematics, computer science and physics were particularly overrepresented. The study also found that 52 percent of those who left in 2024 were Israeli-born, compared with 48 percent who were born abroad. Gilad Kariv, a Knesset member from the Democratic Party, told Ynet that “the scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow are leaving Israel at a rate far higher than their share of the population”, adding that this represents “a strategic threat to the country’s future.” Army officer dismissed over sexual misconduct Yisrael Shomer, head of the Israeli army’s Operations Division, has been dismissed from his senior position over a sexual misconduct investigation, Ynet reported. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Shomer, who had reportedly been considered for promotion to head the Personnel Directorate or the West Bank Command, was removed from his post over allegations of a sexual relationship with a subordinate. Israeli army reports rise in sexual harassment complaints Read More » His dismissal comes almost 11 years after he killed a young Palestinian man who had thrown a stone towards his armoured vehicle. In 2015, Muhammad Ali Kosba, a 17-year-old, was shot three times, including once in the head, by Shomer as he fled after allegedly throwing a stone at an army vehicle in the town of al-Ram in the occupied West Bank. The incident was captured on video and prompted widespread criticism, leading to a postponement of Shomer’s promotion. However, he was not prosecuted, as the Military Advocate General closed the case in 2016. Now, 11 years after Kosba’s death, Shomer has been dismissed from the army for what it described as “moral offences”. Netanyahu accused of endangering right-wing coalition A senior ultra-Orthodox leader has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of endangering the unity of the governing coalition over the failure to pass legislation exempting ultra-Orthodox men from military service. Channel 13 reported on Tuesday that Aryeh Deri, leader of the Shas party and a longtime Netanyahu ally, said in closed-door discussions that the prime minister was responsible for the growing rift between the United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party and the rest of the coalition. The criticism comes after the Knesset this week voted on a bill to dissolve itself. The move followed instructions from Dov Lando, the spiritual leader of Degel HaTorah, one of the two factions that make up UTJ, for party members to support the measure amid dissatisfaction with Netanyahu's handling of the conscription issue. Speaking about UTJ, Deri reportedly warned: "They will join a left-wing government if one is formed after the elections." He also claimed that a senior UTJ figure "is doing everything he can to bring about the formation of a left-wing government". While Deri stressed that he would not join such a coalition, his remarks come as opinion polls continue to place Netanyahu's bloc at around 50 Knesset seats, well below the 61 needed to form a government.
