Ambassador Salzano greets cadets from the Livorno Naval Academy aboard the ‘Etna’ in Tangier

The Italian Ambassador to Morocco, Pasquale Salzano, meets with the cadets aboard the ship Etna, which departed from Livorno on July 18 and is making its first stop in Tangier as part of a training campaign that will continue on to La Coruña, Brest, Dublin, Portsmouth, La Palice, Lisbon, and Cagliari, before returning to Livorno. “We live in a time when the sea has returned to the center of international politics. Trade, energy, security, and digital connections all pass through the sea. And it is increasingly on the sea that geopolitical balances are measured,” Ambassador Salzano tells the 132 cadets of the Livorno Naval Academy who are gaining practical experience through this mission. It is no coincidence, he says, that the first stop is Tangier, “a city increasingly at the center of the balance between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.” “For centuries a gateway to the Mediterranean and a meeting point between Europe and Africa, Tangier continues to remind us today that the sea is a space for encounter, trade, and dialogue, but also for strategic interests.” Every port will be different, Salzano continues, “and each will have something to teach you: about the sea, about people, and about the world in which you will be called upon to serve.” The ship’s motto, “Tenaciously Everywhere,” serves to highlight the history of the ETNA, “which reminds us that there is also a quiet heroism made up not only of extraordinary feats, but of preparedness, reliability, and the ability to be there when needed.” Then, addressing the officers, the crew, and Commander Alessandro De Lucia, Ambassador Salzano concluded: “Remember that a Navy officer represents Italy even when he or she does not utter a word.
