Italian Ambassador to Sudan Mignano Presents Credentials to Al Burhan

(ANSA) - IL CAIRO, 25 AGO - The Italian Ambassador to Sudan, Silvio Mignano, presented his letters of credence today in Khartoum as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the President of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdelfattah Al Burhan. The visit marks the first by an Italian institutional representative to Khartoum since the outbreak of the Sudanese civil war on April 15, 2023, and also provided an opportunity to discuss the next phases of the “Italy for Sudan,” which between December and April has already delivered over 135 metric tons of food and basic necessities to more than 20,000 internally displaced persons in the country, and which, on the occasion of the Berlin Conference on April 15, 2026, Minister Tajani announced his intention to bolster with an additional 30 million euros. The accreditation of the new mission chief—the first among Western countries, as emphasized in a statement from the embassy— “is consistent with the level of diplomatic relations Italy has maintained with Sudan throughout the conflict, reflecting the excellent state of bilateral relations with the African country and Italy’s strong commitment to resolving the crisis.” The ceremony took place at the new Presidential Palace in Khartoum, which was recently restored following the return of the Sudanese Transitional Government earlier this month. Italy is among the few of Sudan’s partners that has never reduced or suspended its development cooperation and humanitarian assistance efforts in Sudan, which today total approximately 137 million euros. This has been made possible thanks to the network of Italian NGOs on the ground and the on-site presence of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). Ambassador Silvio Mignano took up his post on August 5 in Addis Ababa, where the Italian Embassy in Sudan is based following its evacuation from Khartoum in May 2023. Born in Fondi in 1965, Silvio Mignano previously served as Italy’s ambassador to Bolivia, Venezuela, and Switzerland. The visit lasted three days and provided an opportunity for meetings with Foreign Minister Mohi El Din Salam and Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim. During the mission, the ambassador was accompanied by his deputy, Simone Corsale, and his political advisor. In Port Sudan, where the ambassador made a stopover before traveling to the capital, the delegation visited the offices of the AICS, which resumed operations on March 9, Emergency’s pediatric hospital center—the flagship project of Italian cooperation in Sudan—and the Comboni Institute of Science and Technology, which for several years now has been continuously organizing Italian language courses funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
