EU report: Agri' markets expected to remain resilient in 2026 despite heat risks

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 15 - EU agricultural markets are expected to remain resilient in 2026 despite uncertainties linked to the conflict in the Middle East, although spring and summer crops could be affected by exceptionally high temperatures and water shortages, particularly in drought-prone regions, according to the European Commission's summer edition of its short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets. The Commission noted that the report does not take into account the current heatwaves, as the underlying data were collected before they began. The analysis highlights that the El Niño climate phenomenon is expected to peak globally in the autumn. While EU agricultural production is not expected to experience significant direct impacts, "disruptions in global markets could spread through supply chains," the report warns. "Uncertainties, including interactions with climate change, continue to keep El Niño-related risks elevated," the Commission added. Despite uncertainties stemming from the Gulf crisis, the outlook points to favourable growing conditions across the EU, with winter crop yields expected to remain above the historical average. However, uncertainty is pushing up input costs, placing additional pressure on producers' profit margins. The report forecasts higher EU production of oilseeds, dairy products, pigmeat and poultry. Cereal production is expected to decline, although it should remain close to the five-year average, while output in the ruminant, sugar and olive oil sectors is also projected to decrease. #IMCAP Co-funded by the European Union.
