EU gives final approval to aid for farmers facing soaring fertiliser prices

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 15 - EU member states have given final approval to targeted support measures for farmers to help offset rising fertiliser prices linked to the crisis in the Middle East. Meeting at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (Agrifish), agriculture ministers endorsed the European Commission's proposals, which include the creation of a temporary liquidity scheme to cover additional fertiliser costs, the possibility for member states to make higher advance direct payments in 2026, and greater flexibility to reprogramme 2027 CAP funds to support farmers affected by rising fertiliser prices. The liquidity scheme will be co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development at a rate of up to 65%, while member states will be able to provide additional national funding of up to 200%. With the Council's formal adoption, the legislative process for the Commission's proposal, presented on 12 June, has been completed. The targeted CAP amendments will now be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force. On Friday, member states are also expected to decide on the Commission's proposal to increase the CAP agricultural crisis reserve to up to €540 million until the end of the year. #IMCAP Co-funded by the European Union.
