In Tokyo, ‘a dialogue on technology, design, and the culture of innovation’
(ANSA) - TOKYO, 31 OTT - A comparison between Italy and Japan on automation, the legacy of Motor Valley, and the future of the automotive industry. This is the heart of “Italy-Japan: A Dialogue on Technology, Design, and the Culture of Innovation,” an initiative hosted by the Italian Embassy in Tokyo, part of the Italian Innovation Days event series, and co-organized with the Nikkei publishing group, in the presence of the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Giorgio Mulè. Advanced craftsmanship, technology, and automotive design took center stage during the evening, which featured a discussion on creativity in the age of artificial intelligence, balancing cultural heritage and design. Moderated by Nikkei columnist Akira Kobayashi, the panel featured Enzo Mattioli Ferrari, CEO of Ferrari Family Investments and entrepreneur, and Ken Okuyama, an internationally renowned designer and creator of the iconic Enzo Ferrari models. Through discussions of Emilia-Romagna’s “Motor Valley” and Japan’s manufacturing tradition, the event explored the evolution of the concept of creation and the challenges posed by new technologies, electrification, and artificial intelligence. “Italy and Japan share an extraordinary manufacturing culture based on the pursuit of perfection, respect for tradition, and a constant drive toward technological innovation,” stated Mario Vattani, the Italian Ambassador to Japan. “In an era when artificial intelligence generates immediate answers, humanity is called upon to rediscover the profound meaning of creativity and craftsmanship. This dialogue between two leading figures in the automotive industry and culture confirms this.” It was precisely this theme that formed the basis of Enzo Mattioli Ferrari’s remarks; in an interview with ANSA, he attributed his interpretation of the encounter between the two cultures to the common thread of “Italianness”: “When we talk about ‘Italian-ness,’ there are extremely strong values that are recognizable all over the world. Take Ferrari: whether it’s a V12 or any other engine, there’s a common thread that unites all its designs—a creative style that transcends every era. And that is precisely what I mean by ‘Italian spirit.’ At the Italian Embassy in Japan, I find the principles I grew up with and identify with, but interpreted with respect for Japanese culture, including through the use of Japanese materials. It’s a fusion I love dearly: two cultures that, when they come together, manage to create something better for the world.” On the subject of elegance, the entrepreneur then offered an immersive perspective capable of uniting the two countries: “As for the code of luxury, for me it’s above all experiential: it’s what you experience; it’s passion. And this dedication unites Italy and Japan, because the Japanese recognize in us a passion for craftsmanship, and we, I believe, are able to convey to them something they feel with equal pride. Every time I come here, I feel proud to be Italian. I wish I could feel that same sense of belonging in Italy as well, seeing Italians proud to be Italian.” Read article...
