Ambassador Trichilo to Croatia Meets Sculptor Gualtiero Mocenni in Pula

(ANSA) - ZAGABRIA, 20 AGO - The Italian Ambassador to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, on the day following the commemoration of the Vergarolla massacre, visited the exhibition of ink drawings by Leonardo Bellaspiga (1925–2018) dedicated to Istria, housed in the magnificent Temple of Augustus, and the Antonio Smareglia museum hall, located in the building where the great opera composer was born in 1854 (who died in Grado in 1929). Trichilo then met with the artist Gualtiero Mocenni, born in 1935 in the Istrian capital, where he attended school; in 1956 he moved to Italy, initially to a refugee camp near Aversa, and then to Milan, where he still resides today. A sculptor, painter, and graphic artist, he has exhibited his works in over 100 group exhibitions around the world. After holding his first solo exhibition in Milan in 1970, his works can now be found not only in Italy and Croatia but also in many other countries, such as the U.S., Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Dubai, Syria, Ukraine, Greece, Spain, France, and Germany. The creator of numerous sculptures in public spaces—some of which were created in collaboration with his son Simone (who is also a novelist and painter)—Gualtiero Mocenni accompanied Amb. Trichilo on a tour of the main works among the 13 pieces located in Pula, in gardens, parks, and boulevards. Throughout his life, he has received numerous awards and honors for his work, the most recent from the Archaeological Museum of Pula, with a retrospective titled “A Work of the Heart and Mind,” organized to celebrate his 90th birthday and the 70th anniversary of his artistic career. Ambassador Trichilo said he was honored to have had the opportunity to meet in person an artist who, along with singer Sergio Endrigo, actress Laura Antonelli, and diving mask and fin manufacturer Lodovico Mares, is among those natives of Pola who, having left their hometown for Italy after World War II, achieved international success.
