Italy Supports Environmental Protection in Colombia with Satellite Data and Copernicus

(ANSA) - BOGOTÀ, 19 GIU - Italy is strengthening its cooperation with Colombia on environmental protection through the use of satellite data and monitoring tools, highlighting the link between cybersecurity and risk management. “Environmental and space sovereignty is impossible without digital sovereignty,” stated the Italian Ambassador to Bogotá, Giancarlo Maria Curcio, during the debate “Cybersecurity and Risk Management: A View from Copernicus,” organized at the Prisa Group headquarters with the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the European Union Delegation in Colombia. Curcio noted that Rome contributes to environmental protection through three programs: “Amazonia+,” an EU-funded initiative for a cross-border response to wildfires in the Amazon region; “Somos Bosque,” developed with local authorities to combat criminal networks linked to deforestation; and “Ciudades Biodiversas,” supported by the Italian Ministry of the Environment to develop tools for territorial planning and climate change adaptation along the Caribbean coast and in the Colombian Amazon. “A state that knows its own territory, that can safely monitor its forests from space and anticipate risks, is a more sovereign state. And it is precisely this informed sovereignty that international cooperation aims to help strengthen,” stated the diplomat, speaking alongside the EU Ambassador to Colombia, François Roudié, and the Vice President of Prisa Media, Fernando Carrillo. AICS Director for Colombia and South America, Valeria Buoninfante, emphasized that “Amazonia+” is a useful prevention tool not only for Colombia but also for other countries in the Amazon basin. She also noted that “Somos Bosque” provides satellite data to support investigations into environmental crimes and enables the development of analytical models to examine the operational methods of criminal organizations. Finally, Buoninfante presented “Copernicus,” the European Earth observation system based on open-access, free satellite data for monitoring the environment, climate change, and security, highlighting the growing interest among Colombian institutions and environmental stakeholders in these technologies and the role of international cooperation in fostering decisions based on concrete data.
