In Australia, the Republic’s 80th anniversary amid innovation and bilateral relations

(ANSA) - ROMA, 04 GIU - The Italian Embassy in Australia celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Republic on June 2 with a reception at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, a cultural institution that explores Australia’s identity through the faces and stories of the people who have shaped its history and culture. With a large turnout of institutional representatives, including the Federal Minister for Financial Services, Daniel Mulino, who was born in Italy, as well as figures from the business, cultural, and research sectors, the event paid tribute to the dynamism of bilateral relations, highlighting the most significant moments of our recent history and the innovative momentum of Italy and Made in Italy. The Italian Ambassador, Nicola Lener, highlighted the close connection between the principles of the Italian Constitution and the framework of values that inspires Australian foreign policy. “In a deeply volatile international climate, the stability of the Indo-Pacific remains an essential pillar for energy security, freedom of maritime trade, and the resilience of global value chains,” he stated. The ambassador then reiterated that the recent and historic conclusion of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Australia remains a crucial geopolitical milestone for the consolidation of exports and the supply of strategic resources. "Australia, which hosts vast global reserves of critical raw materials and rare earths indispensable for the aerospace industry, defense, and the green transition, is destined to become an increasingly crucial partner for European strategic autonomy," he stated. Finally, he warmly welcomed Canberra’s path toward association with Horizon Europe, the world’s largest scientific research funding program. On the occasion of National Day celebrations, the Embassy inaugurated a dual exhibition that combines the history of civil rights with the celebration of technological progress in the automotive sector: the story of universal suffrage through the ANSA exhibition dedicated to the “Women of the Republic” and a photographic exhibition tracing the historic Mille Miglia route, from the pioneers of motoring to the landscapes that have made the race a global symbol. The visual journey was a great success among guests, who were able to appreciate, in the faces of the first women called to the polls, in those of great leaders and contemporary icons, as well as in Italian automotive genius, the story of an Italy capable of racing on the roads of the world, reborn and innovating.
