Georgia: Ambassador D’Antuono Visits the Dmanisi Archaeological Site

(ANSA) - MOSCA, 09 SET - The Italian Ambassador to Georgia, Massimiliano D’Antuono, visited Dmanisi, an open-air museum and one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, featuring evidence of human settlements dating back 1.8 million years. Research at the Dmanisi prehistoric site is being conducted by an international, multidisciplinary team coordinated by the National Museum of Georgia, with long-standing participation from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Florence. Ambassador D’Antuono was hosted by David Lordkipanidze, director of the National Museum of Georgia, and by Prof. Lorenzo Rook of the University of Florence, who leads the mission funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research (MAECI) and has been working at the Dmanisi paleontological site for years. The Dmanisi site, one of the milestones of modern paleoanthropology, has provided evidence of a crucial moment in human evolution: the out-of-Africa migration. In the 1990s, human and animal remains dating back 1.8 million years were discovered in the countryside surrounding this village, located about 80 kilometers from the Georgian capital; the hominid fossils are considered the oldest ever discovered outside the African continent. The Italian research team is working to thoroughly study the rich fossil fauna associated with the human remains, with the aim of obtaining genetic information of extraordinary interest and reconstructing, in as much detail as possible, the environment and ecosystem of which our ancient ancestors were a part.
