International Horticultural Trade Show in the UK: Italy’s Presence Grows Stronger

(ANSA) - LONDRA, 04 SET - Today marked the conclusion of a four-day mission to the United Kingdom by 16 Italian companies in the horticultural sector, promoted by ICE-Agenzia Londra and the Italian Embassy in collaboration with ANVE (National Association of Nursery Exporters) and its British counterpart, the HTA (Horticultural Trade Association). The Italian delegation—composed of companies from various national production districts, specializing in a wide range of products (from Mediterranean and exotic plants to ornamental trees, citrus trees, olive trees, evergreen and deciduous trees, perennials, grasses, bonsai, cacti, succulents, and fruit crops)—participated in a program of meetings and visits with British industry operators, with a key highlight being their attendance at the Four Oaks Trade Show, a horticultural trade fair held in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. The United Kingdom remains a strategic market for the sector. According to data from the UK government, in 2025, British ornamental plant production reached 1.62 billion pounds, of which 1.1 billion was attributable to the outdoor nursery segment; meanwhile, imports reached 1.55 billion, up 6.4%. In the first half of 2026, imports of live plants from Italy to the UK totaled 29.2 million pounds, representing a 2.8% increase year-over-year. The mission is part of an effort to consolidate Italy’s presence in a market characterized by significant demand and a high level of specialization. As part of the Four Oaks Trade Show, now in its 54th edition, Italian companies, gathered in the Italian Pavilion, presented their offerings and established valuable contacts with British operators, with the support of the Italian Embassy in London. The Embassy’s agricultural attaché, in collaboration with the ICE Office, organized, among other things, a discussion session with British institutional representatives. On the afternoon of September 2, a seminar titled “Climate Change: The Impact on Nursery Production” was also held, featuring presentations by Moreno Pinto, president of ANVE, and Luigi Pagliani, delegate of the European Nursery Stock Association (ENA), and moderated by Matt Appleby, editor and correspondent for HortWeek. The event focused on the impact of climate change on nursery production and, in particular, on the potential of water-wise Mediterranean species to contribute to the resilience of the British landscape in the face of increasing droughts.
