SHO arrested for illegally detaining man in Sahiwal

SAHIWAL: The SHO of the Pakpattan Qaboola police station has been arrested for illegally detaining a citizen and abusing his authority. Sahiwal Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rana Ayaz Saleem ordered the arrest of SHO Chaudhry Waqas. Talking to Dawn, he said that SHO Waqas was suspended, booked, arrested, and placed in the lock-up of his own police station a day earlier. He said that the SHO had been charged in a case under Sections 342 and 155-C on the complaint of DSP Tanveer Sarwar. According to reports, DSP Tanveer conducted a surprise inspection of the Qaboola police station and found a man, Muhammad Shafiq — a resident of Street No 3, Mohalla Khadimabad, Bahawalnagar — in the lock-up. When asked about the FIR under which Shafiq had been arrested, neither Reader Saqib Ali nor SHO Waqas could produce any evidence. Subsequent inquiry revealed that the suspect had been placed under illegal detention by the SHO. The matter was reported to the DPO, who referred it to the RPO. Acting on his directions, the SHO was arrested and locked up in the same police station. Published in Dawn, September 4th, 2026
