Mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurates Rs128m dual carriageway in North Nazimabad

KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the improvement and rehabilitation project of the dual carriageway in Block J, North Nazimabad on Thursday. Deputy Mayor of Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, members of the City Council, elected representatives and other officials were present on the occasion. Addressing the ceremony, Mayor Wahab said that a 3,500-foot-long dual carriageway had been constructed in Block J, North Nazimabad, at a cost of Rs128.3 million. The objective of the project was to provide citizens with better and safer travel facilities. Condemns politics of shutting down Karachi for ‘political gains’ He said that under the project, construction and rehabilitation work on the 3,500-foot-long road had been completed while a paved shoulder had also been constructed along the entire stretch. The project also included the construction of a 3,500-foot-long footpath to facilitate pedestrians and residents. Later speaking to media, Mayor Wahab said that the politics of shutting down Karachi for “political gains” and increasing the number of press conferences was condemnable. He said that no one seemed concerned about the difficulties faced by millions of daily-wage workers, traders and ordinary citizens, nor had anyone considered the loss of millions of rupees to Pakistan’s economy resulting from the closure of Karachi for even a single day. He said that Karachi had witnessed peace and the restoration of normal life after great sacrifices and hard work and that any attempt to hold the city hostage once again would not be acceptable. He urged political elements to move away from the politics of confrontation and protest and focus on politics of construction and development. He said that if development work had previously been carried out in the relevant areas, the present government would not have had to undertake such projects there. He further said that providing Karachi’s citizens with better, safer and quality travel facilities was a priority. Development projects aimed at improving roads and basic civic infrastructure would continue to be undertaken in the wider public interest, he added. Published in Dawn, September 4th, 2026
