Landslides damage properties as rain lashes Haripur

— Dawn HARIPUR: Heavy rain lashed the district on Wednesday morning, causing landslides that damaged properties and blocked a road. The landslides and a lightning strike damaged schools, a police station, and a rural health centre, disrupting mobility at several points in Nara Amazai and Baitgali union councils. However, no loss of life was reported. Residents and police told Dawn that heavy rain caused landslides at several points on Amazai Road, blocking it near Kalilaar village. Saqib Khan Yousafzai, a social activist from Nara Amazai union council, said the boundary wall and a newly-constructed room of a government primary school were damaged when a heavy mass of earth and rock fell on them from a slope. He said that student attendance at the school was low because the access road was blocked. “Some of the students who managed to reach the school were sent back for fear of more rain,” he added. In the same union council, the boundary wall and three washrooms of the Nara Amazai police station were damaged when the boundary wall of the adjoining rural health centre fell on them. Talking to Dawn, SHO Saeedur Rehman Khan confirmed the damage to the police station and schools. Former village council chairman Qari Noor Hussain Tanoli told Dawn that around 3am on Wednesday, lightning struck the house of Bilal Hussain in Dambra Laqab village, damaging one room. However, the family escaped unhurt as they were sleeping in the adjacent room. Police and residents said debris from the Amazai road was yet to be cleared.
