Mohamed Yahya Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Jaspreet Kindra 2 Sep. 2026 1.58 p.m. Mohamed Yahya is Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, OCHA. He started his official duties on 1 September 2026. Prior to this, he served as UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, leading one of the largest UN presences in Asia and the Pacific and coordinating the UN's response to the 2025 floods. He brings more than two decades of experience in humanitarian action, development, and peacebuilding, gained at headquarters, regional and field levels across Africa and South Asia. Before his appointment in Pakistan, he worked in Nigeria, where he led one of the largest country offices of the UN Development Programme (UNDP). He previously coordinated UNDP's Africa Regional Programme, working with the African Union on conflict prevention and stabilization across the continent. Earlier in his career, he held positions with the UN and International Alert in West Africa and in Afghanistan. Yahya holds a Master's degree in Conflict and Development and a Bachelor's in Politics and History from SOAS University of London and speaks Swahili, English and Somali.
