A conference in Cape Town for Italian Sports Day Around the World

(ANSA) - CITTÀ DEL CAPO, 31 AGO - One Italian university and two Italian companies—ranging from a leading multinational wellness firm to a high-tech SME—joined researchers from one of the world’s leading international centers for sports science. This was the format of the meeting organized in Cape Town on August 28 at the Research Centre for Health through Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Sport (HPALS) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), as part of the “Italian Sports Day Around the World” initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiative used sports as a meeting point between research, education, innovation, and industry, bringing together Italian and South African expertise to develop new collaborations and showcase the excellence of the Italian system. The delegation was welcomed by Yumna Albertus, director of HPALS, Alison September, and UCT researchers Malcolm Collins and Sharief Hendricks. On the Italian side, the University of Cagliari, Technogym, and OT Bioelettronica presented three complementary examples of cooperation between research and innovation. Myosotis Massidda, associate professor of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University of Cagliari, outlined the internationalization and Erasmus+ programs developed with South Africa, as well as new approaches to “precision exercise medicine,” based on the integration of physiology, clinical data, and digital monitoring to design personalized exercise programs. The collaboration with UCT already serves as a scientific bridge between Sardinia and South Africa and paves the way for new joint projects. Technogym, represented by Tony Payne of Technogym South Africa, demonstrated how experience gained in elite sports can be translated into solutions for health and wellness through artificial intelligence, big data, connected systems, and personalized exercise programs. OT Bioelettronica, on the other hand, presented high-density electromyography technologies for analyzing neuromuscular activation, with applications ranging from rehabilitation to the development of prosthetics and human-machine interfaces. The role of sports as a driver of innovation and as a tool for transforming scientific knowledge and international cooperation into concrete applications was also highlighted by Francesco Crispino, head of the economic and commercial section at the Italian Embassy in Pretoria. "Sports, science, and innovation form a value chain in which Italy and South Africa have complementary expertise. The goal is to network these areas and transform scientific dialogue into projects, mobility, and concrete opportunities for our businesses as well,” Luca Tiano, scientific attaché at the Italian Embassy in Pretoria, told ANSA.
