(ANSA) - ROMA, 25 LUG - A video has gone viral on social media showing a group of young Italian students on the Bangkok subway in Thailand shouting and disturbing the other passengers in the car. When a woman pointed out that they were speaking too loudly, the students responded provocatively with verbal insults, offensive language, and obscene gestures. The altercation reportedly continued even after the students got off the train, with them striking the windows and making offensive gestures. The video and the incident, which were later picked up by local newspapers, sparked outrage among citizens, thousands of whom flooded the social media profiles of the Italian Embassy in Bangkok with negative comments, demanding an investigation into what had happened. The embassy’s response was swift: an official apology was posted on Facebook. “The Italian Embassy in Bangkok,” the statement reads, “expresses its deep regret over the incident captured in a video shared on social media and strongly condemns the inappropriate behavior of a group of Italian tourists.” The Embassy offers “its sincere apologies to the Thai people and to all those involved in this incident.” “The inappropriate behavior of the group of underage tourists in no way represents the Italian people,” the statement continues, “nor does it reflect the values of mutual respect, friendship, and courtesy that have long been the foundation of the enduring relations between the Italian Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand.” Following further negative comments, the post was followed by a video showing four Italians who identified themselves as the “group leaders” apologizing to the Thai people for the students’ behavior, which was deemed disrespectful. According to the Thai Rath website, the tour operator specializing in educational trips also subsequently issued a public apology, stating that the behavior of some participants did not reflect its values and expressing respect for Thailand and the Thai people.
