(ANSA) - ROMA, 26 OTT - Nicola Lener, the ambassador to Canberra, spoke in Melbourne at the annual “Eureka Democracy” award ceremony, where this year’s prize was awarded to Antony Green, a former journalist with the public television network ABC who specializes in analyzing voter trends. The ambassador attended the event at the invitation of the “Stockade Australia” association, composed of descendants of the key figures in the failed Eureka Rebellion of December 3, 1854, remembered as one of the founding moments of Australian democracy. In recent months, the embassy in Canberra had collaborated with the association to identify the location (the ossuary at the Verano Monumental Cemetery in Rome) where Raffaele Carboni is buried, a follower of Giuseppe Garibaldi who took part in the uprising and later recounted it in the book “The Eureka Stockade.” In his remarks, Ambassador Lener recalled the life story of Carboni, a follower of Mazzini and Garibaldi, who emigrated to Australia following the Roman Republic of 1849 and returned to Italy after being tried and acquitted for the Eureka Rebellion, and he highlighted the significance of the connection between the two countries centered on democratic ideals even before both achieved their independence. A deep connection, the ambassador emphasized, that predates the great waves of Italian migration to Australia and is being renewed today through the full alignment between Rome and Canberra on multilateralism and a rules-based international order.
