Manzo: ‘Rome and Ankara United on Regional Security, Including in New Multilateral Formats’
(ANSA) - ISTANBUL, 02 NOV - “There is intense and excellent bilateral cooperation between Italy and Turkey in the political, economic-commercial, historical-cultural spheres, which also translates into renewed collaboration within multilateral frameworks established to address new challenges in the region, as in the case of the recent 4+4 meeting in Istanbul attended by Minister (of Foreign Affairs Antonio) Tajani.” This was stated by the Italian Ambassador to Turkey, Giuseppe Manzo, in a lengthy interview with the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, highlighting the “extraordinary ties between our countries and our communities that span all areas of our lives, extending even to the new frontiers of cooperation in space.” “This partnership,” said Manzo, speaking from the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara—a symbol of cooperation between Italy and Turkey in archaeology—“is also built on the ‘strong personal ties between the leaders in Rome and Ankara,’ as well as the prominent economic and trade relationship, given that Italy is Turkey’s leading partner in the Mediterranean and its second-largest in Europe. Numerous figures illustrate the state of bilateral relations: from the presence of Turkish students in Italy (“we host the second-largest community of Turkish students in Europe”) to the defense industry, where Italy and Turkey are strategic partners and “within NATO share the priority of ensuring security on the Alliance’s southern flank as well,” all the way to “shared approaches to international governance and reform of the United Nations Security Council.” In the interview, Ambassador Manzo also emphasized the cooperation between the two countries in the cultural sphere, stating that “Turkey ranks second in the world in terms of the number of archaeological missions (15) led by Italian archaeologists, and we have now launched the innovative Italian Itinerary of Istanbul, which will showcase centuries of Italian ingenuity as an integral part of the historical heritage of the city on the Bosphorus.” Read article...

Symposium in Istanbul on Economic Relations Between Italy and Turkey
(ANSA) - ISTANBUL, 02 NOV - Strengthening academic and scientific cooperation to understand the evolution of past trade and economic investments and to more effectively define future priorities and initiatives that address new challenges—at the regional and global levels—for economic activities, trade, and investment flows between Italy, Turkey, Europe, and the broader Mediterranean region. This was the focus of the Italian-Turkish scientific symposium, held today at the Palazzo di Venezia in Istanbul at the initiative of the Italian Embassy in Turkey, with the participation of the Italian Historical Institute for the Modern and Contemporary Ages (ISIEMC) and the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUB). “Trade agreements, the modernization of the customs union between the European Union and Turkey, and the dynamics of trade—which today make us Ankara’s leading Mediterranean partner and second-largest European partner—are issues of the utmost relevance to us, as is the possibility of ‘triangular partnerships’ with other regions of the world, starting with Africa. Gaining a deeper understanding of these issues is essential for developing new tools and projects to reinforce the unique nature of these centuries-old relations.” This was stated by the Italian Ambassador to Turkey, Giuseppe Manzo, as he opened the day’s proceedings, which—in the presence of approximately 150 academics, researchers, and entrepreneurs—were led by the director of ISIEMC, Gaetano Sabatini, who explained the system of Ottoman “capitulations.” Speaking on behalf of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, Ismail Koyuncu confirmed Tuba’s support for the new phase of scientific cooperation between Italy and Turkey. Among the other presentations at the conference—which took place as part of the embassy’s “Ideha26” promotional program and to mark the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Turkey —were those by Giampaolo Conte of Roma Tre University, who explored the presence of the Italian financial sector in Turkey; Alessandro Albanese of the University for Foreigners of Perugia, who discussed economic relations between Turkey and the European Community in the 1960s; by Ebru Boyar of MRTU University in Ankara, who presented the case of an Italian family that published a major newspaper in Turkey in the early 20th century; and finally, by Lelio Iapadre of the United Nations University in Bruges, who spoke about Italy and Turkey in the European Union.
