“Forest Carabinieri: ‘Biodiversity Keepers’,” an exhibition at UNESCO running through October 29

(ANSA) - PARIGI, 27 OTT - Thanks to the collaboration between the Carabinieri and Italy’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, an exhibition dedicated to the role of the Carabinieri as “biodiversity keepers” opened last night in Paris. Italy boasts the richest biodiversity in Europe. From Alpine forests to Mediterranean coastlines, its extraordinary landscapes are home to unique ecosystems, rare wildlife, and an unparalleled agricultural heritage. Through audiovisual experiences and interactive installations set within an “ideal forest,” visitors can discover the hidden wonders of Italian biodiversity while learning about the vital work of the Carabinieri Forestali in safeguarding forests, wildlife, and protected areas. “The Carabinieri work daily to protect the territory: from combating illegal waste trafficking to defending agricultural and food excellence and natural reserves, our efforts safeguard the environment in all its forms. The exhibition we are inaugurating at UNESCO is a call to awareness and a concrete commitment to future generations to preserve the delicate balances of the planet,” stated Gen. C.A. Fabrizio Parrulli, commander of the CUFAA (Carabinieri Forestry, Environmental, and Agri-Food Units Command). Indeed, peacebuilding and peacekeeping also depend on the protection of the environment and biodiversity. UNESCO has been active in this field since the 1970s through the “Man and the Biosphere” program, which aims to reconcile the needs of environmental protection with those of sustainable development. The program, for which Italy currently holds the rotating vice-presidency, manages a global network of nearly 800 Biosphere Reserves—21 of which are in Italy—that together cover 5% of the Earth’s surface. “Here at UNESCO, the Carabinieri are known for their role in safeguarding cultural heritage. Today, it is also important to highlight their work—less well-known internationally but equally important—in defending biodiversity. This work benefits the community, and Italy wishes to present it as a best practice and a model that can be replicated on a global scale,” stated Ambassador Liborio Stellino, Italy’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, addressing a large audience of diplomats and international officials.
