Flowers, letters, and children's drawings for pope at Gemelli Hospital
(ANSA) - ROME, 15 OTT - Flowers, letters, and children's drawings for Pope Leo XIV have been piling up beneath St John Paul II's statue at Gemelli Hospital where the 71-year-old American pontiff has been hospitalised for three days and where he had lung-cancer surgery on Tuesday. "Hi Pope, let my dad—and my mom—take care of you!" reads one note, decorated with many hearts. Another says, "Pope, we're waiting for you; come see us when you're feeling better!"—signed with the colorful handprints of many small children. These are among the drawings left at the foot of the large statue of Saint John Paul II—which "watches over" the sick in the courtyard of the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital—nestled alongside small bouquets of flowers, candles, and portraits, all addressed to the distinguished patient, Leo. Meanwhile, other letters from children—young patients at the Roman hospital—are being hand-delivered to the gendarmes on duty. As Leo enters his third day of hospitalization at the Gemelli, the outpouring of affection and prayer for the Pontiff continues. Having suddenly found himself vulnerable, he did not hesitate for a moment to undergo an emergency surgical procedure, hoping to salvage a schedule packed with international commitments. Yet, much like what happened just a year and a half ago with Francis, even a figure as prominent—and only seemingly all-powerful—as a Pope finds himself sharing the uncertain fate of many other patients, who perhaps now see him as even more relatable and human. Among these are, first and foremost, the children who attend a preschool at the Gemelli—a facility designed for those undergoing long-term treatment, such as the young patients in the pediatric oncology ward, which is located on the very same floor—the tenth—as the one where Leone is staying. "In this Mass, once again, we entrust to the Lord our dear Holy Father, who has been a patient here at our hospital for the past few days. Let us pray that he may experience this time with serenity and trust, supported by the expertise and dedication of those who are caring for him," said the chaplain, Father Nunzio Currao, during the midday Mass—voicing the sentiment shared by everyone in the hospital. The presence of the papal entourage is discreet, yet constantly monitored by gendarmes and police officers, while the large hospital complex remains bustling with a steady stream of people—some arriving for appointments, others for treatments or check-ups. Many stop to pray in the chapel, lighting candles or kneeling before a statue of the Virgin Mary or other devotional figures, such as Saint Teresa of Ávila, whose feast day is celebrated today. For the time being, the Pope is resting and continuing his work; it is possible that he may soon receive visitors, or perhaps, once he is mobile, he might visit other hospital wards—much as Pope Francis has done, and as John Paul II also did on several occasions during his own numerous hospital stays. Pope to return to Vatican after cancer surgery
Pope Leo XIV will leave the Rome hospital where he has been recovering from lung cancer surgery, the Vatican said on Saturday, after doctors deemed him “fit for discharge”. Leo, 71, has been at the Gemelli hospital north of the Vatican since Tuesday, where doctors removed part of his right lung to extract a cancerous tumour. “Considering the blood tests, the chest X-ray done this morning, and evaluating the clinical picture, the Holy Father has been deemed fit for discharge,” doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora wrote in a note published by the Vatican. The Vatican confirmed that “Pope Leo XIV will be discharged today”. “He will leave the hospital in the early afternoon and return to the Vatican. Tomorrow he will recite the Angelus prayer from the window of the papal apartment,” the Vatican said. The Angelus prayer is typically given by the pope from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St Peter’s Square. But in past years, former popes John Paul II and Francis, similarly hospitalised at the Gemelli, have delivered the prayer from the window of their hospital rooms. The Vatican’s press office said that Leo celebrated Mass on Saturday, as he has in recent days, in a room on the 10th floor of the hospital where he has been recovering. Up in air News that the otherwise healthy and sporty pope had a cancerous tumour removed from his lung has rattled the Vatican and the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. But his doctors have said Leo’s recovery has been progressing normally as they await the results of tests that will determine the course of action to take. Up in the air, however, is a planned papal voyage to South America, scheduled for November 6-17 to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Pope watchers say that Leo — who spent two decades as a missionary in Peru — is anxious to make the long journey, but will likely follow the recommendations of his doctors. Leo has cancelled all his audiences until October 20. The pope himself announced to the public in St Peter’s Square last Sunday, following the Angelus prayer, that a routine medical examination had revealed a nodule that doctors recommended should be removed.

Smiling pope returns to Vatican after cancer surgery
Pope Leo XIV left the hospital to enthusiastic cheers and applause from well-wishers and returned home to the Vatican on Saturday, four days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer. The 71-year-old pope was seen crossing the lobby of the Gemelli Hospital on foot and exiting the building, smiling as he shook hands and waved. He spoke briefly to the doctors who treated him and hospital officials before pausing to speak with a Ukrainian girl, a cancer survivor who wanted to wish him well in his recovery. Soon after leaving the hospital, the pope’s black SUV was seen driving through a side entrance to the Vatican. Leo’s discharge capped five days of uncertainty that rattled the Vatican and the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, less than two years into the Chicago-born pope’s papacy, which began upon his election on May 8 last year. Earlier on Saturday, Leo’s doctors said the pope was “fit for discharge”, according to the Vatican. Before his discharge, Leo celebrated Mass at noon, according to the Vatican, as he has in recent days, in a room on the 10th floor where he has been recovering. The 13-year-old Ukrainian girl who spoke with the pope outside the hospital earlier on Saturday told AFP that she was rooting for him. The cancer survivor said she had met the pope last year in Rome, “and he blessed me for a successful treatment”. “With his support, I’ve now overcome my illness, and I want to give him my positive energy so that he, too, can overcome his illness as quickly as possible,” she said. Up in the air News that the otherwise active pope had a cancerous tumour removed from his lung was met with trepidation among the world’s Catholics and other supporters.
