Finance minister to head to Bangkok for annual IMF, World Bank meetings

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will head to Bangkok for the annual International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group meetings. In a statement, the finance ministry said Aurangzeb would depart on Saturday for Bangkok to lead Pakistan’s delegation to the World Bank Group–IMF annual meetings, scheduled to be held from Oct 12 to 18. “During the visit, the finance minister will represent Pakistan at key events of the IMF and the World Bank Group and undertake an extensive programme of over 60 high-level engagements with international financial institutions, finance ministers and policymakers, development partners, global investors, banks, credit rating agencies, think tanks and international media,” the statement said. The ministry said the visit came as Pakistan continued its transition from “macroeconomic stabilisation towards sustainable, investment and export-led growth, while advancing structural reforms and strengthening engagement with international capital markets and development partners”. The statement said Aurangzeb will hold a series of high-level engagements with the leadership of the IMF and World Bank Group, including the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, focusing on Pakistan’s macroeconomic outlook, reform progress, private sector development and future cooperation. He will also attend the IMF managing director’s meeting with finance ministers, central bank governors and heads of regional financial institutions of the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan region. He will also engage with the leadership of major multilateral and development finance institutions, including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Opec Fund for International Development, the Saudi Fund for Development, the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the ECO Trade and Development Bank, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the International Organisation for Migration. “On the bilateral front, Aurangzeb will hold high-level meetings with counterparts from Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye, Iran, the United Kingdom and host country Thailand, aimed at strengthening economic, investment, trade and development cooperation. He will also engage with the US Department of the Treasury to further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation and discuss Pakistan’s reform and investment agenda,” the statement said. The ministry said Aurangzeb will also meet and participate in investment seminars, sovereign investor forums and roundtable discussions with leading international financial institutions. “These engagements will provide an opportunity to highlight Pakistan’s improving macroeconomic fundamentals, structural reform agenda, international market access and investment potential,” it said. The minister will engage with Alibaba International Digital Commerce as part of discussions on Pakistan’s digital economy, e-commerce and investment opportunities. In addition, he will participate in key multilateral forums and will also contribute to high-level policy discussions. “As part of Pakistan’s international market outreach, the finance minister will hold engagements with all three major global sovereign credit rating agencies, Fitch Ratings, Moody’s and S&P Global, and present Pakistan’s economic and reform trajectory to international investors,” the statement said, adding that he would also engage with leading international media organisations. “Across these engagements, the finance minister will highlight Pakistan’s progress in restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening fiscal and external buffers, advancing structural reforms and returning to international capital markets, while setting out the government’s priorities for investment, exports, private sector-led growth, job creation and greater financial inclusion,” it said.

AI investment props up global growth, but war and debt threaten outlook, IMF says

By David Lawder BANGKOK, Oct 13 (Reuters) - The global economy will still manage to top 3% real GDP growth this year as strong AI investment offsets the energy shock from the war in the Middle East, but downside risks are mounting and more countries are being left behind and vulnerable to rising debt loads, the International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday. Despite a more protracted conflict that has kept oil prices above $100 a barrel, the IMF is forecasting 2026 global growth at 3.1%, a slight uptick from the 3.0% it predicted in July.

AI offers global economy huge risks and benefits: IMF

BANGKOK: The artificial intelligence boom has been a key driver of global growth, but also poses economic risks should investment in the technology falter, experts and policymakers said this week at the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. Propelled by spending on data centres and microchips, AI has helped cushion the economic shock of rising global energy prices caused by war in the Middle East, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said. The fund’s chief economist Silvana Tenreyro noted this week that global trade rose 8.3pc between 2023 and 2025 — a figure she said would be closer to 4.6pc without AI-related products. “It is everywhere in the global economy,” Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said of AI. “You see it in GDP. You see it in the stock market. You see it in the bond market… So it is here, and it’s just the beginning.” But some top officials gathered in Bangkok this week cautioned against relying too heavily on AI investment. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh called AI the “most consequential change” to the global economy in his lifetime, and said it had “a huge benefit”. Still, he warned the road ahead would be “bumpy”. “The path from where we are to there is likely to be a very bumpy one, bumpy in our understanding of the technology, bumpy because we really don’t know what the market structure is going to be of these new technologies,” he said. Russia boycotted Many delegates to the International Monetary Fund’s steering committee walked out of a meeting on Saturday when Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov addressed the group in Russian, three sources familiar with the matter said. Delegates walk out of meeting during Russian official’s speech Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has roiled the International Monetary and Financial Committee, preventing it from reaching consensus statements in the years since. There were deep divisions again at this week’s annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Bangkok, as new tensions flared between the US and Ukraine. “Many delegations walked out, including members of the European Union,” one of the sources said. A second official in the room said nearly a dozen delegates left the room when the Russian official began speaking. Delegates from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were among those who left, the official said. Published in Dawn, October 18th, 2026
