Colombia: Italy Supports the Restoration of Cartagena’s Historic City Walls

(ANSA) - BOGOTÀ, 09 OTT - Italy is supporting a project for the conservation of the historic city walls of Cartagena de Indias, in northern Colombia. The Italian Embassy, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), and the city government are finalizing the guidelines for the national ideas competition “Imagine the Future of Cartagena’s Walls,” open to architecture students and architects up to age 30. The initiative aims to gather proposals to improve the connection between the San Ignacio and San Francisco Javier ramparts, two key points of the city’s fortified system, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entries may be submitted through November 5. The competition is part of an international cooperation project funded by the Italian government with a grant of 3 million euros, earmarked for heritage preservation, the promotion of sustainable tourism, and the strengthening of the local economy. The planned interventions include the restoration of several sections of the walls, such as the La Tenaza spur and the Murallita del Diablo, as well as the construction of an elevated walkway connecting the two bastions. The project also includes work on the Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría and the Santo Domingo bastion. Proposals must consider not only architectural aspects but also the relationship between the city walls and public spaces, the landscape, local culture, and the city’s residents and visitors. Participation is open to individuals or groups of up to three people, with at least one member from Cartagena. Ten projects will be selected, from which the three best will be chosen. The selected ideas will be exhibited and may contribute to the subsequent phases of the project. Read article...
