Luca Sabbatucci is the new Italian ambassador to Bern

(ANSA) - ROMA, 01 OTT - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces that Luca Sabbatucci has taken up his post today as Italy’s Ambassador to Bern. He was born in Rome on March 5, 1963. He graduated with honors in Political Science with a concentration in international relations from La Sapienza University of Rome in 1988 and completed his military service in the Carabinieri. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February 1990; during the early years of his career, he served in the Diplomatic Protocol Office and the Minister’s Office. In 1992, he was assigned to the embassy in Seoul, where he remained until 1996, when he was appointed Consul in Athens. In April 2000, he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as Chief of Staff of the Directorate General for Human Resources. From 2004 to 2008, he served in Ankara as Deputy Chief of Mission. In 2008, he returned to the Ministry and once again oversaw the management of human and financial resources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first as Deputy Director General and later as Director General for Resources and Innovation. In this role, he completed the process of reorienting Italy’s diplomatic and consular network launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supported reforms aimed at increasing the emphasis on merit in human resources management policies, and promoted the adoption of innovative work methods to ensure their effective implementation. In January 2019, he was appointed Director General for Global Affairs. In this capacity, he was responsible for a wide range of issues, both bilateral and multilateral: from relations with Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America, to Italy’s membership in the G7, the G20, the OECD, the IEA, and other global forums on energy, climate, the economy, and finance. In 2022, he served as Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, a position he retained following a change in government. On November 15, 2022, in Paris, he served as Permanent Representative to International Organizations, where, among other duties, he chaired the OECD’s External Relations Committee.
