‘RAW agent’ held with explosives in Sahiwal

SAHIWAL: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested a suspected agent of hostile Indian intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), in an intelligence-based operation near New Ghala Mandi, Pakpattan city, on Monday night. According to CTD sources, a mobile team led by Under Officer Fida Hussain got a tip-off about the presence of a suspect near New Ghala Mandi. Acting on the information, the team conducted a raid on the identified location and apprehended the suspect, identified as Wajid Ali, a resident of Bajur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The CTD officials say the suspect was planning terrorist activities, targeting sensitive and security installations in and around Pakpattan. During the operation, they say, the CTD recovered a shoulder bag containing 1,825 grams of explosive material. Other seized items include electronic devices, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), an iron box, a camera, three battery holders, electric circuits, detonators, wires, and Rs2,400 in cash. The CTD team called Bomb Disposal Squad personnel to the spot, led by Asgher Ali, from Pakpattan, who deactivated a live device found in the suspect’s bag. A case (No 29/26) was registered under sections 4, 5 of the Explosive Act 1908 and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1996, on the complaint of CTD Under Officer Waseem Ahmed, by CTD, Sahiwal. The sources say that the suspect was shifted to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) headquarters in Sahiwal for further investigation. He was produced on Tuesday in the regional anti-terrorist court, which granted a seven-day physical remand of the suspect and handed him over to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). The court directed that the suspect should be presented again on Sept 29. ARRESTED: The Anti Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested on Tuesday the Union Council No 12 secretary for allegedly accepting a bribe for issuing a birth certificate. According to the ACE, Gulam Murtaza, a resident of Sahiwal city, applied for the birth certificate of his sibling to UC No 12 office. The UC Secretary, Saleem, allegedly demanded Rs10,000 as a bribe for issuing the certificate. Murtaza reported the matter to ACE Circle Officer Arshad Zaman Watto. Taking action on the complaint, an ACE team, along with the area magistrate, conducted a raid and arrested Saleem, with the bribe amount. A case was registered under Section 161 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 5(2)47 of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the suspect. Published in Dawn, September 23rd, 2026
